Just got myself an NG 9-5. I saw this and I was nervous that this would be a “here is all the costly issues you will face” video, but I’m pleased to know that this car is not like that. Yes it will require service but nothing that shouldn’t be done normally. This channel seems helpful. I look forward to my NG 9-5 ownership

Of course, buying a 13 year old vehicle, you do run the risk of needing to service components that are going to wear out especially if you have over 100,000 miles. So far I’ve replaced all four of the struts and the only issue I had was a failed window control module
@@denzellima3079 that sounds like an excellent price. Just make sure that you look at the service history (if available) and assure it’s been well kept. I got lucky as mine was 1 owner and was serviced/bought at the same shop for everything. For anything that a pre-inspection mechanic says that should be replaced/serviced immediately should be researched. Since not many of these new 9-5s were made/sold compared to old models, often times, the Saab specific parts are harder to find and may cost more and could take longer to source. Be sure that you factor that into your decision so that you can enjoy your Saab instead of resenting it being in the shop for long periods of time

@@sarahdell4042 No. People think just because 2 cars share the same platform, that means its the same car. For example here in the uk people say the Saab 9-3 is just a Vauxhall/Opel Vectra underneath, but actually, only the platform is the same, saab 9-3 handles much better than the vectra, despite using the same platform. So part sharing doesnt mean same car.
Would you specify some more details regarding what parts they share? I'm about to buy a used NG 9-5 but my mechanic and few other people on Saab forum told me to stay away from NG 9-5s due to shortage of parts in North America.
@@waifuracer6516 I second this comment. My dad had a 2003 2.2 SRi Vectra when I was growing up and I believe the 2005 9-3 I own shares the same platform but the similarities stop there. My 9-3 lacks the grunt the Vectra had but seems to have superior handling. I don't know if that's down to the passive rear steering and I don't think the Vectra had this. Unlike the Vectra, the SAAB feels more attached to the driver and communicates with decent sensory feedback. My 9-3 was also my first car which I bought before learning to drive. I was criticised for buying it as the belief was it was too big for a new driver. The car helped me prove them wrong and I quickly found it to be a predictable and rewarding thing to drive.
For 2.8L Engines ,, inspect the wiring harness in the engine bay. from the front facing the back on the right hand side where the battery is (drivers side left hand wheel vehicles) that runs down in between the engine exhaust shield and inner fender. make sure its not contacting the exhaust shield as its extreme heat will damage the wiring harness . make sure the harness has clearance and is secured away from contact, protect the harness with "thermal heat sheaving wrap" is a suggestion.. the high heat in this area tends to cause the wiring harness plastic sheaving to shrink pulling the harness into contact with the exhaust shield which will damage the wiring inside if contact is not addressed. as long as people are aware of it . its an easy issue to address.
I was lucky enough to test drive this car in 2009. I was a proud owner of an older generation 9-5 estate and thought this car was really nice and a step up for Saab. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford to buy one at the time. Shame it all went wrong for Saab in the end.
Excellent video. my 2011 Saab 9-5 aero is showing a rear differential problem. Where should I start in diagnosing this problem? I located in the US and not to many repair shops seem to want to work on this car.

Ive currently got a 9-5 NG TID4 auto however ive been quite unlucky with it over the few years. Mind is saying to replace however heart is not agreeing. Going to spend the christmas break to look into the issues im having and as i say the info you and others have provided on youtube and online will def help. All the best for the new year. Nav
one thing to suggest on the 2.8 v6 check the wiring harness that goes down between the turbo and the left fender well.. have found some heat damage challenges with this harness due to its close location to the exhaust and addressed this by using heat protection tape wrapped around it , issue comes about when the harness plastic sleeve cover shrinks drawing it too close to the exhaust. inspect this harness and protect from heat with heat protection tape is a suggestion .
1.6T has a timing belt like diesel models since it's a GM company engine which was also used for OPEL, Vauxhall etc. NG9-5 with that engine is pretty rare, only 201 cars produced 😲
Thanks for the feedback on this. I was sure that this also had a chain, but now that I read the production report as well I noticed it said belt driven. It's not very common as you wrote.
I got a 1.6T! 360.000km driven and still drives like a charm. Only "problem" is that the turbo's are quite weak. First went with 200.000, second with 359.000. Both had the problem of the waste gate flap breaking off. Otherwise superb car!
Fantastic video, I have infotainment memory issue in my car which I haven’t been able to fix and both my heated chairs not working. I have the 4 cyl turbo petrol engine but when it is very cold sometimes the turbo stops working, but once the car warms up, you can just switch off the engine for 5 secs and switch back on and the turbo works again. This only happens when cold. If you know any Saab specialists in Melbourne Australia please let me know. But other then that I love this car.
Thank you for another very useful video. I will be checking my firmware version later today! Other points to think about before buying. 1. (Edit: you have a link to this one!) I had a failed light in the centre break light, as you know there is a good video on how to change this online, and the replacement part is easy to get hold of. 2. If you need to get a replacement key, as I now do :(, this seems much more difficult.
1. The DIY kit is quite new and it's great! I have another brake light on the shelf though. I did repair that myself by replacing the diodes. If you can solder it's not that difficult so if you keep one extra brakelight you can get away really cheap :) However.. The DIY kit is really good and it would probably last a lifetime. The key replacement require some GM MDI programming. :-/ Thanks for watching!

About LED light bar: I'm currently working as an international sales director of a LED company and I wrote an email to Orio where I suggested a co-operation to solve the problem of LED bar unavailability. They never replied me....
The 1.6T actually has a timing belt instead of a timing chain which I mention in the video. The cost of replacing a belt compared to a chain is much less. However the 1.6T is not that common. If you spot one o these don't be afraid of buying it because it's a GM engine in there so spare parts are in other brands and models as well and as I mention there is actually a tune for it. Thanks so much for your video. I am in the US, in Los Angeles, and I own a 95NG with the old software. I’ve brought it to all kinds of saab mechanics but no one knows how to do the update. One place said they hooked it up to their machine that has all the latest updates from GM, but it only made the bugs worse, and it still says Version U40D. I have the dropbox link to U803, and have a jump drive ready to go, but I have read that if anything goes wrong in the middle of this update (battery dying or some other glitch) you can ruin the car... rendering it useless. Any guarantee if we keep the engine running the whole time, it won’t die in the middle of the update? How many hours is that? Should the average person be ok to try this? Have you heard horror stories? Thanks for any advice, and thanks for being there for the saab community!
Hi Suzanne and thanks for watching. The only horror story I've heard is that there has been people putting the european software in the US version and vice versa. That is going to ruin the navigation system. I believe the update takes around 30 minutes and you could keep the engine running or hook it up to a good batterycharger while doing this. I do believe that they are reliable. The thing you will be facing could be some issues if you ever need taillights or need ro replace the bumper. Be aware of that. Drive carefully and you will be fine. (and hope others drive carefully as well..)
I’m exactly considering a last generation SAAB 9-5, is a very great car with good car body shape and multiple useful functions. But after watched video I still have a question: if I drive the car very less, should I still changing oil? Or the oil change is based on your mileage?
I prefer the styling of the Aero-model, but have bought a Vector. I found that the Aero was difficult to find in Norway. The car looks best with "big wheels" (19 og 20'), and I was lucky to find a set of brand new original turbine rims. (Not cheap, but I didn't expect them to be). Have tried to find out if it is possible to by new aero front- and rear spoilers, but have not found anyone selling? Any tips?
Rust in an expensive Saab? No way not noticed any rust in our family’s 2007 9-5 which seemed the last true 9-5. This just looks like an Opel Insignia inside.

I have not had any issues with vapor inside the LED lightbar (yet). It's a common problem yes. I have a dehumidifer in the boot. I have also drilled one very small hole on each of the "glass" covering the number plate lights. It can also be the gaskets that are between the lightbar and the car that has gone bad. @@TechCars Thanks for informative answer! I consider buying new gaskets for the LED lightbar from H. Blom Engineering (hblom.se). According to Blom, the factory delivered gaskets were not "100 %". If so, they should probably be replaced as a preventive measure also. Difficult job? How about a new video covering this topic? :-)
I have few error messeges about head lights self leveling. But mecanic said jjst ckick it off. Its sensors that are hard to access. Under the front bumper..is that so?
I think you should get it fixed. I don't think it's very complicated. You just need to get the car up in the air so you can get access underneath. Just look near the front and rear axles. BR Markus

Hi. I think you should do a optical inspection underneath and checking bushings. Best way would be to check for any vibrations. Drive it slow.. and do some pulls both from 0-xx and from xx-yy to see if there's anything strange. Can you look for faultcodes in the system?
You are correct. It's not a bulb that you can easily change. It's a LED and since it's veri difficult and expensive to buy a new taillight you need to open it up and change the electronics. If you are sure it's the electronics and not just a wire/connector issue. @@TechCars Yes, I do understand , but AERO models have only V-6 engine here in USA. But I'm looking for AERO with I-4 cyl. engine and FWD only. And of course all the options included. Beside that Yankee's in US did not know of Diesel SAAB's ...

@@valdimicolchik7975 The Turbo6 is actually fairly economical, something like 8.x litres/100km hwy ... but less so in the city 13.x litres/100km city. I've also read that the 4cyl is slightly underpowered for the 9-5's size/weight.

The 2.0T was released with XWD and Adaptive suspension as options. You can't get that if you want a 2.0tid. If you don't need it that engine is pretty solid. With a Hirsch tune it's quick as well ;-)

It's something you only need when it's a bit cold. I don't drive it in winter so I don't use mine. But often I hear complaints about the heated seats not working..

I have to be ownest with you. Some parts can be hard to find. Rear lights are a nightmare but they do pop up every now and then. Inner fenders in the front are on backorder (Has been for a long time). Rear Bumper and foglight can also be a bit tricky!

If you accept that some parts are a challange to get. (rear lights) it's great. Stable and quality wise it's a step up I think. Then there's always a risk like with any brand and model. You get one that has not been taken care off..
A SAAB 9-5 or SAAB 9-3 should not leave this noise - you have a problem - take it to service, please. I´we got an Aero 2,3 -260 hp my self, with silent (?!) sounds :-))
tjener marcus , i own a 95 ifrån 2000 its from boston and it is a 3.0t v6 automatic. i have been looking at the new one you have there . but i am so happy with my old one ,and it so smooth driving . would you change if you were me , or should i keep the old one , i have heard many bad things about the motor and transmission , but i take real good care of it . with oil after 1000mil . and etc etc ....its got 25.000 mil on the clock. and i just changed almost everything under the hood . thanks
The old generation 9-5 is a great car. It brings alot of value for the money you put in it. It's a joy to drive. Especially on long journeys. However the new generation 9-5 is something different.. It's amazing. If you find a well maintained Turbo6 I think you should go for it. Can you afford to keep both?

Is it possible to use an engine from a 9-5 (2.8L V6) and putting it in an older 9-5 Griffin from 2000? I am thinking about it but i im trying to look for enough information about all the things i need to chance to make it possible.
No it is not. Definitely not a direct fit (the engine is quite big, compartment is really crowded). Not to mention different transmission etc. I don't know anyone who would try that, although believe me I would like it too
I know what you refer to. But this is something completely different of an engine and tranny. This would require crazy amount of engineering, improvisation and even some magic.

I am able to buy an engine with tranny so that's why i am asking :) the only problem i saw was how to confert the frontwheel drive into an fourwheel drive. The 9 5 i got is also an automatic tranny so it would have been a bit easier than conferting it from a manual to an automatic
@@user-nc9ct6ky3z well you could buy the same (very little difference) engine from ng93 2.8 v6 where it also is as FWD, so you would not have issues with tranny and awd setup. But hardware is still only a small part of story. What about mounts, driveshafts, ECU and the rest of electronic gears including cluster panel?

@@TechCars Thanks Markus, interesting and useful film. Quick question please. Does this firmware update address the service steering column lock issue? BTW, there is a workaround for this (from saabworl.net), removing fuse 57 (engine compartment fuse box) seems to allow the car to start OK. Not sure if there are any other items affected by doing this - so wouldn't recommend it, but I've been driving car with that fuse removed for a few weeks and starts/runs normally. Great car, just a bit troublesome with these types of issue (voltage, electrics).
It's anyway you can help me with a link on where to buy the positive post terminal for the battery of my 2011 saab 9-5, as you know the terminal branches to six connectors, each one with a fuse, I think that in my car one got damage when I by mistake a give charge to start his truck and as consequence, the electrical system in my car started to act wierd, to the point that the ac, sunroof, headlight, turn signals don't work or if they do, it will be for a while then everything just goes awol, even the alarm system. I think that is one of the connector's fuse is damage or weakned by a spike in the voltage of that help to my friend's truck. The car starts and runs ok. Can you please give some guidance.
Hi, It depends on which engine you have. Here's the one for the Turbo6, www.esaabparts.com/saab/parts/25918134 If you look around you can find them for the other engines as well. Depending on where you live, just look at the numbers at the local SAAB certified garage. Also the BCM module in your car is the one causing the weird stuff happening with the turn signals etc. Have the garage check the BCM module. You may just have to change it to see if the strange issues stops! BR SaabCars
Saabs biggest high-tech garbage ever made. The older (pre-GM) 9-5s are great vs the NG (new gen) 9-5 are just high-tech garbage that constantly require maintenance

For those in the Americas, many of the parts of the 9-5 are shared with the 2010-2016 Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac.

Fantastic video, I have infotainment memory issue in my car which I haven’t been able to fix and both my heated chairs not working. I have the 4 cyl turbo petrol engine but when it is very cold sometimes the turbo stops working, but once the car warms up, you can just switch off the engine for 5 secs and switch back on and the turbo works again. This only happens when cold. If you know any Saab specialists in Melbourne Australia please let me know. But other then that I love this car.

1. (Edit: you have a link to this one!) I had a failed light in the centre break light, as you know there is a good video on how to change this online, and the replacement part is easy to get hold of.
2. If you need to get a replacement key, as I now do :(, this seems much more difficult.
1. The DIY kit is quite new and it's great! I have another brake light on the shelf though. I did repair that myself by replacing the diodes. If you can solder it's not that difficult so if you keep one extra brakelight you can get away really cheap :) However.. The DIY kit is really good and it would probably last a lifetime. The key replacement require some GM MDI programming. :-/ Thanks for watching!

The 1.6T actually has a timing belt instead of a timing chain which I mention in the video. The cost of replacing a belt compared to a chain is much less. However the 1.6T is not that common. If you spot one o these don't be afraid of buying it because it's a GM engine in there so spare parts are in other brands and models as well and as I mention there is actually a tune for it. For reference www.gdmperformance.se/trimsatser/36-saab-9-5-16t-180hk-2010-2012.html it's in swedish though but I think you can find the numbers in there ;-) Thanks to @Tomi Toikka for letting me know that the 1.6T is belt-driven.
@DenisDk111 The 2.0t is a nice machine. It can also suffer from bad chains I'm afraid. Replacement cost is cheaper than on the Turbo6 though!

Thanks so much for your video. I am in the US, in Los Angeles, and I own a 95NG with the old software. I’ve brought it to all kinds of saab mechanics but no one knows how to do the update. One place said they hooked it up to their machine that has all the latest updates from GM, but it only made the bugs worse, and it still says Version U40D. I have the dropbox link to U803, and have a jump drive ready to go, but I have read that if anything goes wrong in the middle of this update (battery dying or some other glitch) you can ruin the car... rendering it useless. Any guarantee if we keep the engine running the whole time, it won’t die in the middle of the update? How many hours is that? Should the average person be ok to try this? Have you heard horror stories? Thanks for any advice, and thanks for being there for the saab community!
Hi Suzanne and thanks for watching. The only horror story I've heard is that there has been people putting the european software in the US version and vice versa. That is going to ruin the navigation system. I believe the update takes around 30 minutes and you could keep the engine running or hook it up to a good batterycharger while doing this. I do believe that they are reliable. The thing you will be facing could be some issues if you ever need taillights or need ro replace the bumper. Be aware of that. Drive carefully and you will be fine. (and hope others drive carefully as well..)

I’m exactly considering a last generation SAAB 9-5, is a very great car with good car body shape and multiple useful functions. But after watched video I still have a question: if I drive the car very less, should I still changing oil? Or the oil change is based on your mileage?
I would change it once a year if you drive less. 👍

I prefer the styling of the Aero-model, but have bought a Vector. I found that the Aero was difficult to find in Norway. The car looks best with "big wheels" (19 og 20'), and I was lucky to find a set of brand new original turbine rims. (Not cheap, but I didn't expect them to be). Have tried to find out if it is possible to by new aero front- and rear spoilers, but have not found anyone selling? Any tips?
automatic is a must! shifters! fear of xwd expensive service cost.. drivesense, electrically moved and heated seats, sun roof.. turbine rims

I have not had any issues with vapor inside the LED lightbar (yet). It's a common problem yes. I have a dehumidifer in the boot. I have also drilled one very small hole on each of the "glass" covering the number plate lights. It can also be the gaskets that are between the lightbar and the car that has gone bad. @@TechCars Thanks for informative answer! I consider buying new gaskets for the LED lightbar from H. Blom Engineering (hblom.se). According to Blom, the factory delivered gaskets were not "100 %". If so, they should probably be replaced as a preventive measure also. Difficult job? How about a new video covering this topic? :-)
I have few error messeges about head lights self leveling. But mecanic said jjst ckick it off. Its sensors that are hard to access. Under the front bumper..is that so?
I think you should get it fixed. I don't think it's very complicated. You just need to get the car up in the air so you can get access underneath. Just look near the front and rear axles. BR Markus

Considering a 2011 AWD and loaded with 127000 v6 turbo with 127000 miles. What should I have checked before purchase. Concerned about rear diff and drive train reliability
Hi. I think you should do a optical inspection underneath and checking bushings. Best way would be to check for any vibrations. Drive it slow.. and do some pulls both from 0-xx and from xx-yy to see if there's anything strange. Can you look for faultcodes in the system?

You are correct. It's not a bulb that you can easily change. It's a LED and since it's veri difficult and expensive to buy a new taillight you need to open it up and change the electronics. If you are sure it's the electronics and not just a wire/connector issue. @@valdimicolchik7975 The Turbo6 is actually fairly economical, something like 8.x litres/100km hwy ... but less so in the city 13.x litres/100km city. I've also read that the 4cyl is slightly underpowered for the 9-5's size/weight.

I tried the links for the trunk strip light. Nothing available. Any other sources you might be aware of? I just bought this car (2011 9-5 aero, v6, awd) about a month ago, giving up a wonder 2003 9-5 aero in the process. Are there any after-market navigation/radio products available? The car I bought does not have navigation. Thanks for the video lessons. They're terrific. I'd really like to fix that strip light at the rear so any suggestions would be wonderful.

The 2.0T was released with XWD and Adaptive suspension as options. You can't get that if you want a 2.0tid. If you don't need it that engine is pretty solid. With a Hirsch tune it's quick as well ;-)

TiD did not get drive sense. If you ask me I there's a big difference in comfort.

It's something you only need when it's a bit cold. I don't drive it in winter so I don't use mine. But often I hear complaints about the heated seats not working..

I have to be ownest with you. Some parts can be hard to find. Rear lights are a nightmare but they do pop up every now and then. Inner fenders in the front are on backorder (Has been for a long time). Rear Bumper and foglight can also be a bit tricky!

If you accept that some parts are a challange to get. (rear lights) it's great. Stable and quality wise it's a step up I think. Then there's always a risk like with any brand and model. You get one that has not been taken care off..
A SAAB 9-5 or SAAB 9-3 should not leave this noise - you have a problem - take it to service, please. I´we got an Aero 2,3 -260 hp my self, with silent (?!) sounds :-))

tjener marcus , i own a 95 ifrån 2000 its from boston and it is a 3.0t v6 automatic. i have been looking at the new one you have there . but i am so happy with my old one ,and it so smooth driving . would you change if you were me , or should i keep the old one , i have heard many bad things about the motor and transmission , but i take real good care of it . with oil after 1000mil . and etc etc ....its got 25.000 mil on the clock. and i just changed almost everything under the hood . thanks
The old generation 9-5 is a great car. It brings alot of value for the money you put in it. It's a joy to drive. Especially on long journeys. However the new generation 9-5 is something different.. It's amazing. If you find a well maintained Turbo6 I think you should go for it. Can you afford to keep both?

Is it possible to use an engine from a 9-5 (2.8L V6) and putting it in an older 9-5 Griffin from 2000? I am thinking about it but i im trying to look for enough information about all the things i need to chance to make it possible.
No it is not. Definitely not a direct fit (the engine is quite big, compartment is really crowded). Not to mention different transmission etc. I don't know anyone who would try that, although believe me I would like it too

I know what you refer to. But this is something completely different of an engine and tranny. This would require crazy amount of engineering, improvisation and even some magic.

I am able to buy an engine with tranny so that's why i am asking :) the only problem i saw was how to confert the frontwheel drive into an fourwheel drive. The 9 5 i got is also an automatic tranny so it would have been a bit easier than conferting it from a manual to an automatic
@@user-nc9ct6ky3z well you could buy the same (very little difference) engine from ng93 2.8 v6 where it also is as FWD, so you would not have issues with tranny and awd setup. But hardware is still only a small part of story. What about mounts, driveshafts, ECU and the rest of electronic gears including cluster panel?

It's a folder with instructions on how to upgrade the software and the software is in the zip-file. Make sure you have an empty USB flash-drive formatted in FAT32. Unzip the files in root of the USB flash-drive. Then follow the instructions in the PDF :-)

@@TechCars Thanks Markus, interesting and useful film. Quick question please. Does this firmware update address the service steering column lock issue? BTW, there is a workaround for this (from saabworl.net), removing fuse 57 (engine compartment fuse box) seems to allow the car to start OK. Not sure if there are any other items affected by doing this - so wouldn't recommend it, but I've been driving car with that fuse removed for a few weeks and starts/runs normally. Great car, just a bit troublesome with these types of issue (voltage, electrics).
It's anyway you can help me with a link on where to buy the positive post terminal for the battery of my 2011 saab 9-5, as you know the terminal branches to six connectors, each one with a fuse, I think that in my car one got damage when I by mistake a give charge to start his truck and as consequence, the electrical system in my car started to act wierd, to the point that the ac, sunroof, headlight, turn signals don't work or if they do, it will be for a while then everything just goes awol, even the alarm system.
I think that is one of the connector's fuse is damage or weakned by a spike in the voltage of that help to my friend's truck.
The car starts and runs ok.

Hi, It depends on which engine you have. Here's the one for the Turbo6, www.esaabparts.com/saab/parts/25918134 If you look around you can find them for the other engines as well. Depending on where you live, just look at the numbers at the local SAAB certified garage. Also the BCM module in your car is the one causing the weird stuff happening with the turn signals etc. Have the garage check the BCM module. You may just have to change it to see if the strange issues stops! BR SaabCars

Saabs biggest high-tech garbage ever made. The older (pre-GM) 9-5s are great vs the NG (new gen) 9-5 are just high-tech garbage that constantly require maintenance
technically i agree, but the ng just looks so good. Espicially in whire or a light grey. Darker colors make it too chubby.
