    Finally, the transfer case and transmission rebuild videos are done! Well, we have to reinstall them and test them as well, so, nearly done. That episode should be up next week (28th) and the short Q&A video will be up before the end of the year. After that, we're mostly moving back to a video every other week schedule for a while to allow more time to actually work on cars, which hasn't happened much with all of the time spent editing videos recently!
    EDIT: Just noticed an error at 1:13. I mentioned that the parts diagrams at "GMPartsDirect" were a big help but what is being shown is the parts diagrams and numbers from "WholesaleGMPartsOnline", I misspoke and named the wrong website. GMPartsDirect is a good website as well, but WholesaleGMPartsOnline has the detailed part number information and is the one that saved my butt.

      This truck had transfer case issues, mainly that the rear bearing had failed dramatically, allowing the rear output shaft to slide forward and partly engage splines inside the transfer case causing grinding and clunking when the splines slipped.
      Your issue sounds more like a transmission problem, but best of luck with whatever it turns out to be!

    7 of my 10 vehicles are RUST free and I live in NW Ohio on Lake Erie! 3 were bought in Atlanta, Georgia where my little brother is a cop and 4 were bought brand new the other 3 are custom built Rock Crawler Jeeps so they get beat up on the trails and touched up every winter so they aren’t technically rusty... I get my winter (daily) drivers hot oil sprayed underneath vehicles and all nooks and crannies (?) every year, while it costs about $100 per vehicle it is well worth it, they all look like new other than having a film on them that prevents rust and things come apart waaaaay easier and clean up to a like new appearance easily! I take a lot of pride in my belongings and take care of them like you do and while my fleet is worth nearly $200k I have always taken care of everything I own (I do beat them like rented mules but that is my FUN!) and I love seeing you do things with your own 2 hands and after showing your videos with the Blazer to my youngest child, he with my help bought a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Cabriolet Karmann Edition to restore and he has actually replaced the convertible top and rebuilt the entire braking system all on his own, he is a 17 yr old Junior at The Ohio State University as a Chemical Engineering major, yes a 17 yr old Junior in college, quite an amazing child and seeing him take an interest in cars is amazing and he wants to do a VR6 conversion this summer when he is home and I can’t wait, little does he know I already bought the donor VR6 and getting everything gathered up to surprise him when he comes home in April to start the conversion!

    Thank you for posting this, I have a 2008 chevy that has the NQH (MP3023) transfer case behind a 4L60E transmission with a 27T spline input shaft. I found a transfer case out of a 2012 Yukon/Tahoe with only 15,000 miles but the input shaft is a 32T. I thought it was just gonna be a simple task of taking the new one apart and swapping the input shaft but you are right.... There is little to no information on these transfer cases... and short of taking both apart and just seeing if the input shaft will work, then there is problem of trying to source the right input shaft. Ultimately I want to rebuild the one that's in the truck to have a spare, since the truck is lifted and goes through four wheel drive components pretty regularly. So I have a feeling I will be watching this video over and over as I go through the process of trying to figure this out!

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Best of luck with your project! Other than the motor components and clutch parts the MP3023 is extremely similar to the MP1222. I hope these videos can help!
      Interim 2012 was the year they changed to the second design transfer case (with the smaller case range gear) so you'll have to figure out which design yours is. Best I can tell, 19132977 is the part number for the 27 spline first design input shaft, 19299085 for the second design. Each runs $120-150, but I'd suggest checking into those parts for yourself to be sure that's what you want.

      @@FuzzyDiceProjects I put it together tonight, I had to take the front housing, input shaft, hi/lo clutch, and the planetary gear from my 1st design MP3023 and install them on the rear housing with all the main shaft & guts from my 2012 Interim model MP3023... I'm gonna install it in the truck tomorrow. Thank you for posting the rebuild. Mine is the automatic shift version with the encoder motor, so it was a little different but it went back together pretty easily.

      @@FuzzyDiceProjects as an aside, earlier this summer I installed this junk yard transfer case in my truck and while I was buying the gasket that goes between the transfer case and the transmission adapter I asked Chevy to give me a couple of bottles of the fluid that goes in this transfer case. They gave me Autotrak 2... the 2007-2013 transfer cases take Dextron VI and I think that the Autotrak 2 is what was wrong with the transfer case. There was nothing wrong internally with the transfer case that I pulled out. Everything looked to be in good working order, but when I dumped the fluid it was bluish black not red... I suspect the wrong fluid is the culprit. It wasn't clunking or anything, it just wouldn't shift into four wheel drive. I've only put around 2-3000 miles on the truck since the transfer case change this summer. I think the cold Autotrak 2 fluid wouldn't allow it to shift or something... doesn't matter now, I have a new transfer case and fluid and it works perfect. Thanks for posting these videos, awesome job!

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheAlaskaCajun Very interesting, thanks for sharing! The fluid might be breaking down in some weird way and causing clutch malfunctions. Mine has only ever had ATF in it, but there aren't any clutches in the MP1222 so maybe the Autotrak 2 fluid is supposed to have some special additives.

    You're doing surgery on this rebuild working through those little holes lol. I was talking to a coworker and he was saying how engineers don't care at how maintenance can be preformed and he onced owned a rock crusher that was such a pain in his rear, he called the company and complained about it and they actually changed their design after his complaint lol

      I have no idea why this model of transfer case has those two separate holes as the access port, many other models have a slot so it is way easier to get just about any snap ring pliers onto the ring.

    I just got an idea while watching at 10:40 - Is there an oppotunity to install a oil cooler to the transmission and or the transfercase? However, i love these videoes, and merry christmas from Denmark 👌🏻🇩🇰👋🏻🇺🇸

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do plan to install an auxiliary transmission cooler in the future, but using a transfer case cooler would be very uncommon. Even in a transfer case with clutches, the fluid doesn't work as hard as it does in an automatic transmission and won't heat up as much, so it really isn't necessary. Some people that are worried about it will even just overfill the transfer case to get more fluid in there to spread out the heat. A pump like the one in this transfer case isn't really designed to move fluid like that either, but I wouldn't be surprised if something has been built to do it at one time or other.

    Please do an item by item and total cost of the rebuild in the next video. And Also if you go back in time what would you change?

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't end up tallying things up in the next video, but the total cost of the transfer case rebuild was $330 (plus like $15 for the RTV and ATF I suppose). Shift fork ($25) + Fork pads ($12) + Rear bearing ($48) + Output bushing ($5) + Seal kit ($25) + Carrier ($140) + Range hub ($40) + Small parts kit ($25) = $330
      I wish I had found that document with the design change info and updated part numbers on it sooner, but it was pretty difficult to dig up. This rebuilt actually went really smoothly, but if it was done sooner maybe less parts would have had to be replaced. I might have cheaped out and saved like $28 by going with an ACDelco rear bearing, but I figured I'd spend a little extra for an SKF part since I really don't want that to fail again.

    How many hours did it take to rebuild the transfer case?

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Going off of the timelapse and the other footage, looks like it was right around 12 hours from unbolting the tcase adapter to when it was bolted back on. But, this took place over several spaced out days since everything but the reassembly was done while also working on the transmission and trying to get all the right parts for this took a few weeks.

  • @Codethe_Road
    @Codethe_Road 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Damn--- is it cheaper to rebuild? Or, would you have been able to just pick and pull one from the junkers? That's usually how I fix fiddley things like this.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In many cases, it would probably have been cheaper to find another transfer case and either just replace the old one or get parts out of it, but this particular transfer case isn't terribly common and they went through a few revisions so it would be tough to guarantee the parts would match even if I found one for a good price. And it's not unlikely that another one I picked up would have had the snap ring break (or other wear issues) and need work done anyway.
      Total for the transfer case rebuild was $330, it's not impossible but I doubt I could have found another one locally at a better price.

    How did the transfer case get that bad off to begin with?

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mention it a little bit in this video, but I'm not entirely sure what started it. The TSBs were for the rear snap ring, but I think that only cracked from the extreme wear on the bearing's inner race. Couldn't find a TSB on the fork pads but since GM changed the designs they obviously knew it was an issue.
      Whatever started it, the fork pads were broken off and the bearing must have been wearing away for quite a while before I bought the truck. The dealership clearly lied about changing the transfer case fluid, because it looked very rough when I got it home. Then I put 20k miles on it ignoring the problems haha, but I wouldn't recommend delaying it like that since I probably wouldn't have had to replace as many parts if this was done sooner.
