Premium Bonds after a year: Were they worth it?

  • I've had £10,000 saved in Premium Bonds for 12 months, so it's time to see how well they did.
Did I win big? Did I win anything at all? And would I have been better keeping the cash in an easy access savings account?

The biggest advantage I see to Premium Bonds, is that it puts your money "Just" out of spending range. If you need the money back you can get it quickly, but its far enough away that your not to tempted to spend it. Plus you can also win prizes.

Don't forget that as interest rates rise and fall so do the premium bond 'interest rates' which means your odds of winning something changes too. Ive had my bonds for a couple of years, i noticed a big drop off in winnings when they reduced the rate around a year ago and the odds changed. So if you start seeing savings accounts increase then chances are the base rate has increased and premium bond rates may well increase too. Cheers for the video.

Lots of people have said after a year the prizes fade away . They drew thier money out then reinvested it again and the pattern followed the regular small wins for the first year. It seems that they make sure that new investors are rewarded with a little peice of the carrot. Securing their interest . Being so happy to get 1% returns on £10k is to my mind very odd, as every year passes the chances of winning have reduced with PB. I'm sure those that have £10k to invest would do much better elsewhere, comparing PB to easy access ccounts is somewhat dubious in any case, how many people who have £10k to invest would need easy access to it, not many I would think.
What were the 1 year fixed rates at the end of Feb 2021, 1.1-1.2%?
£10k for conservative investorts you'd be better off with a split of 1-2 year fixed rate and low risk/low return stocks and shares ISA.
Myself, I bought £10k of postage stamps from a wholesaler who purchases new postage stamps from closed shops and the like. I bought 1st class @ 47p 4 years ago and the value is currently £18k. Even if I had purchased them at full value they'd be worth £13k, easy to offload in bulk at a sizeable profit

When I was born my grandfather kindly put £1000 into premium bonds for me. I guess premium bonds were a new thing and he figured the tax free winnings might just be worth it. In my mid 30's I eventually sold the premium bonds. I'd "won" almost nothing over the years (about £100) and I received the £1000 back as a lump sum. ( thinking of charity bank and ecology building society) as I do not pay any bills by direct debit .then am I right I then set up a switching account and I move this new current account to the new deal, once that has paid out the moving fee I move that account to another new one or am I suppose to have a few 'starter accounts' I noticed a TSB account needed to use debit card 30 times in the month. Is this for say food shopping ( would there be a minimum amount each time or could I just spend £1 each time.
... Also is it worth changing my halifax to the next level up where I have to have £5000 in to get £5 a month back (or is it only £2 a month back). Thanks for your help. ( sorry for all the questions)
