As a new player at the Albany (NY) Curling Club I can confirm what AJHipCurler said two years ago about the direction a skip points to communicate their intention with regard to the curl. So I immediately was saying 'wait, that's wrong!' when I was watching the "How to Call a Shot" video. It's interesting that something as basic as that would be done differently in different regions. But there you have it. Another bit of complexity to learn.
For folks curling in the Northeast US: a exception to the rule, for some reason A LOT of skips from Albany point the opposite direction with their arms. (Yes that's right, many if not most folks from that club point in the direction they expect it to curl not in rather than the direction the handle should start). Throws one off completely the first time you play them.... or even just the first end each time, lol. Otherwise great advice a usual of course. :-) Communication is so key.
Yes, that's definitely a fun one when seeing that for the first time! Seems to be pretty localized to upstate NY like Albany, Utica, Rochester, etc..... You might see this "counterintuitive" signaling here on Long Island too, but... that's only because it's arena ice and we're merely playing against the slope (unless it's at our spiel and we've been able to level out said slope). Gosh, I miss spiels.
Another straight forward, informative video Jamie. As a new skip I'm surprised to see how many skips don't use the tee line. I also hover the broom a couple of inches above the ice if there are rocks blocking the throwers view. Not something I see other skips doing but it seems to work.

An idea I have for a new video....the one thing, of many, that I struggle with is what direction to hit a stone with, in-turn vs. Out-turn, when wanting to throw a double take out for instance. I know that the angle of each turn can have different effect on the rock that is thrown. But i am not grasping the physics of it. . i hope I am explaining this ok. Thank you Jamie.
Great video. Only one add. If you can't use the tee line because a rock blocks the throwers' view, move your broom forward towards the thrower's hack (i.e. on the angle, not straight out). Have to keep reminding the juniors of this.
Hey Jamie, I was playing skip in one of my "bye" games this last week and our normal team's skip told me after the game that when calling a tolerance shot it should be higher or lower (vertical) in the playing area and not farther to one side or the other side (horizontal) (i.e. calling the tolerance based on how much I think the stone will curl). I made one call that was within the 4 foot area and my tolerance shot was in the 12-foot, 8-foot area but outside the middle 4 foot area, so it was more of a diagonal tolerance. Thoughts? I wanted your input on this.
i think tolerance can be both weight (which i think is what you're talking about by saying "vertical") and line (which would be horizontal). Depending on the shot, it could be both or even just one. The important part is just making sure the thrower knows.

Good point! Ive had teammates that were taught the opposite also haha definitely needed to communicate that and get on the same page!
