- In the early 1970s, the Imperial Iranian Air Force - as it was then known - sought to procure new fighters to combat potential threats, particularly that posed by the new MiG-25. The new MiG’s capability was largely a mystery to the west, and Iran needed a strong deterrent for it’s northern border regions. Two options were on the table; the F-15 Eagle, and the F-14 Tomcat. After demonstrations of both aircraft in the US, for the Shah and his officials, Iran chose the F-14A to be its new front-line fighter.

I wish he were here in the west. I would love to interview him on my channel. The Iranian F-14 pilots were operating in what was a target rich environment. Because of their success in air combat they frightened the iraqi pilots. So much so that the Iraqi's did their utmost to avoid U.S. Navy F-14's during the gulf war. Libyans not so much. In fact history was made when September 1981 the first dogfight between opposing variable geometry winged jets. "Swing Wing" Occured in the Gulf of Sidra between Libyan SU-22 Fitters and F-14's from I think the Kennedy? Splash two fitters!

During the war with Iraq, I was a member of an elite rescue unite of the 23 Nohed Army special Forces to be sent inside enemy territory, to rescue downed Iranian Pilots inside Iraq, if they were downed near to the Iranian territory in the west. So far I know, the F-14,s were always inside Iran near the border when Iranian F-4 Phantoms going deep inside Iraq to carry very dangerous missions. On one occasion in the year 1985, only one F-14 was literally above our head near the border and was waiting for 3 Phantoms to come back from a mission from Baghdad. Suddenly, we saw him getting attitude in a very savage move, making a rollback and shooting one rocket into the air, and stay’s for 2 minutes in a very high altitude circling. Almost 4 weeks later, we asked the pilot what was the reason for his action. His answer made us very nervous:"Two MIG 23 of the Iraqi Air force try’s to block one Iranian Phantom to get back into Iran, and he shot down one of them with that rocket in the distance.” he said. What our Iranian Pilots went through in the was horrible, and many of them were killed. I know, they were all TOP GUNS, real heroes and brave until the last breath. Respect and salute to each of their souls.

The highest-scoring pilot in the history of the F-14 Tomcat is the Iranian ace Jalil Zandi, credited with shooting down 11 Iraqi aircraft during Iran-Iraq War making him the most successful F-14 pilot. 🦅🚀🏆🥇🦅🦅🦅

Most of the Iranian Pilots are former Imperial Iranian Air Force pilots that had been awaiting execution and in prison. When the Iraqi's invaded they literally had been thrown from prison cells to their cockpits and fought with such tenacity.
Excellent documentary. How the Iranians managed to keep the F14 operational well into the early 1990s despite the American sanctions and lack of spare parts, is indeed a miracle and speaks volumes about the ingenuity of these people.

IRIAF F-14s are still in service. They have been maintained/overhauled and upgraded locally for 45 years without any help from Grumman.
They are still in service and now Iran build parts for them

As an Iranian American I have to say we have a deeply rooted sense of pride for our airmen. They got treated like shit by the regime and still put up a fight to protect the mother land. They wanted nothing else but the integrity of the nation, truly selfless and brave.
Our airmen are the successors to our famous horseback archers.

As an Iranian soldier who was present in the 8 years of the Iraq-Iran war, I say that if it were not for the modern weapon orders from the Shah of Iran and the modernization of the army, especially the Iranian air force, we would never have had the possibility to resist Iraq, let alone to win the war.
We owe all these successes to the very important purchases of the Shah for Iran. ❤️SHAH❤️

My grandfather was a fantom pilot during the iran-iraq war and he says they were in the whole next level.they just take off for long missions or hunting some mig 21's.They could take down an enemy aircraft without crossing the iraq territory
I wonder if it was your grandfather that we had a dalliance with in the Straits of Hormuz in '87.
As an EW operator I detected two phantom radars to the north of us as we sailed East through the straits with our convoy of British flagged merchant ships. Our radar operators confirmed that there were no contacts on that bearing so we deduced that they were ready on the runway at Bandar Abbas.
A few moments later the two contacts appeared. One of the F4s stayed over Bandar Abbas as CAP and the second one headed East. As it flew past us I lost its signal (as the radar is in the nose cone and only looks forward .. ish). At about 90 odd miles out we lost it on radar.
A few minutes later the radar re-appeared on my console, so we knew that the F4 had turned around and was coming back.
Watching this particular radar intercept the scan was quite wide - there was a 'long' gap between signals received so I knew that it was in its normal wide scan mode. As the Phantom got closer this wide scan changed to quite a fast "beep beep" as the scan narrowed, so we knew the pilot was looking at 'us'. OK, interesting but no break in the general rules of radar usage. This then changed to a constant signal. The F4 had locked on to us. My first thought was "you're kidding me", followed by "how dare you!" - So I claim that phrase before St Greta 😁.
I blew my whistle to get everyone's immediate attention in the ship's operations room and called out the radar and bearing. The two surface to air self defence missile system gunners were out the back of the ops room having a fag. To this day I still don't know how they managed to get themselves to their consoles in that cramped compartment; but hey, they did.
I'd like to think that within 30 seconds of the RIO locking on to us they both received the high pitched signal of being locked on to themselves. So they knew that we knew 🙂
I checked with my colleague a couple of years ago who had been manning our shared radar screen as to what range the F4 pulled away and that was 9 miles. Whites of the eyes in our world.
As a professional to a professional, if that were your grandfather, I'd like to punch him on the nose and then take him for a pint of beer. No, scrub that, many pints of beer.

I went to UCLA in the 1970's. Met all kinds of Persians. The religious and the Westernized ones. So sad how the relationship soured between our 2 countries. Yes I know about the Embassy siezure...but I had quite a few Persian college mates and I am not ashamed to say I liked them. I hope there is no war between our 2 countries. Persians will FIGHT!
Iran had a democratically elected leader in 1953, his name was Mohammad Mossadegh. He was widely popular in Iran but he wanted to nationalize Iran's oil industry, so the CIA and MI6 orchestrated a coup and organized power under the Shah of Iran, who functioned as a dictator for decades. In the 1970's, the Shah of Iran was considered by Amnesty International to be one of the world's largest human rights violators and perpetrators of human rights crimes. The Shah was able to remain in power from 1953 until 1979 because he was propped up America. Under the Shah, British and American oil companies continued to extract vast amounts of oil from Iran. Iran has the fourth largest oil reserves in the world. In the late 1970s, the Shah was very unpopular in Iran and there were mass protests among secular and religious parts of Iranian society. There were nation wide strikes, mass protests among students, the imposition of martial law by the Shah, murders by the Shah. In 1979, the masses rose up and overthrew the Shah. In the process, some revolutionaries held American embassy staff hostage. Jimmy Carter negotiated for their release, but Reagan ensured the hostages were not released after the 1981 election. Reagan made a deal with the revolutionaries to supply them with money and weapons.
If America had kept its piggish snout out of Iran in 1953, Iran would likely be a democracy today. Currently, Iran has features of a democracy (they hold elections for their parliament and their president), but their Supreme Leader (Religious leader) controls the Iran's armed forces and intelligence agencies and he alone can declare war. Also the Supreme Leader appoints a Council of Guardians that oversees parliament.

@anonnon4737 Who elected your so call "democratically elected" prime minister? In Iran's constitutional monarchy the Shah is the head of executive branch, all the PMs were directly chosen by him and confirmed by the National Parliament. There wasn't any election for Prime Minister in Imperial Iran.

My dad was one of those Persians who studied at UCLA in 1970s and he told me so many good memories from his time there. Who knows maybe you two have met.
And don't forget Yadullah Khalili, she did almost 12 hours of air patrol in just one flight with 8 aerial refuelings

Iran had also ordered 160 F-16s and Iranian pilots were trained to fly F-16s, but Jimmy Carter canceled the contract and delivered Iran's F-16s to Israel and Pakistan

It was Shapur Bakhtiar and later on Mehdi Bazargan who cancelled the deal and US never ever returned the money

My uncle was among the engineering crew sent to US for this training package came with F-14s. He had a lot of stories about these beautiful creations :)

Modern air combats are not like WWII. It is more about the radar range and missile capability. most of the credit goes to Grummen, Hughes, Mcdonald Douglass...etc

As evidenced by inadequate planning and coordination leading to failures at the similar time in operations such as Operation Eagle Claw and Operation Linebacker, it's clear that even with state-of-the-art and brand new equipment supplied by companies like Grumman, McDonnell Douglas, and others, the credit cannot be solely attributed to equipment manufacturers.

That is why pilot training schools are there, the operations are planned before hand...It does not or it is much less dependent on the bravery and feelings of the pilot! your opinion is mainly based on the Iranian literature, legends! Modern warfare is getting more and more away from that! even in 1970's which is half a century back, operating an F14 was super easy, the radar detects an airplane from 150KM and tells you its model name, you got enough time to communicate with the airbase and decide then push the button!..no more WWI/WWII dogfights !

Pilot Fereydoun is one of my best friends and after watching the movie Top Gun 3 I said to him, you should have acted in the place of Tom Cruise in that movie, and the F-14 Supporters Association in US needs your experiences to train pilots.
Kudos to the Iranian pilots mentioned. Even the most diehard Iranian revolutionary would have to admit the great Satan produced some damn fine aircraft.

FYI I watched not long ago a speech by the Supreme Leader of Iran, the slogans they are known to use like the “Great Satan” and “Death to America” is NOT directed to the America people. It’s directed specifically to the US Government, warmongering politicians, lobbyists…etc.

The thing with F14 is it does not stop (like F16) a pilot do maneuvers that can actually destroy aircraft. A good pilot can pull up some crazy stuff with F14s.

Actually American at first didn't believe that Iranian could use and make those F14s operational after the revolution! But Iranian took huge steps and use those airplanes as the best way possible! Iraqis ended up using Russian and few other foreign pilots too as the war went on… Iraq was backed by 32 countries including both superpowers of the time and Iran was completely isolated by every but had God on it’s side and still does!❤️🇮🇷

Thank you for correctly highlighting the heroic efforts of the Iranian fighter pilots. What is omitted is the context: USA gave Saddam Hossein the green light to invade Iran, for the oil and gas rich southern regions. USA and Europe then provided ALL necessary satellite and intelligence to Saddam's armed forces, together with conventional and chemical pre-cursors for the manufacture and use of chemical weapons of mass destruction. Simultaneously, the USA and Europe introduced the most stringent set of embargo's on Iran, so that as the foreign minister would say: "We could not even buy a bolt on the black market". Given this context, and the fact that the F-14 needed round the clock maintenance and spare parts, one scratches the surface of what the Iranian fighter pilots did. Lest we forget, that this, yet another Middle East folly by the allied forces, cost the lives of 1 Million human beings and hundreds of thousands injured...the 8 year war of attrition that the USA and Europe enabled, saw the bloodiest trench warfare and use of chemical weapons by an increasingly desperate Saddam Hossein, since WWI. Shame on you all...and ultimate respect for the Iranians, that ultimately pushed Saddam Hossein back into Iraq.

Wow! If not for this video, i would never know that Iran produced some of the world's best pilot aces. We always only see Western documentaries that mentions American pilots only.

This is a testiment to three things: 3d is Iranian bravery. you dont know how it is like to be low on ammo and yet taking off with a trust in your heart that you will land after the mission, also how many Iranian kids age 13-15 volunteer for the battle front, my dad was in airforce during the war and he told me many many stories, about his collegues and younger kids.
In 1980, my uncle Col. Sedghi downed four Iraqi Mig 23s in a single combat, in a supporting role attacking an Iraqi air base housing newly acquired Iraqi Mirages. He had another Mig 23 kill prior to this operation, totaling his victories to five.
I wonder how many Iranian pilots became aces in the F-4 Phantom. The F-4 dominated the skies over Iraqi aircraft.
Their main role was strike bomber during the war... Check what they did on H3...

F-4 Phantom was vastly inferior to Iraqi MIGs in the 70s. The main reason why Shah of Iran bought the F-14s because he wanted a fighter that could dominate all of the Iraqi fighters including MIG-21, MIG-23, Foxbat and Mirage F1s. It did a great job doing it where Iranians achieved a very high number of kills. F-4 Phantoms were used for air-to-ground attacks and were escoted by F-14 Tomcats during the Iran-Iraq war.

Just read any history of the Iran-Iraq war (try the one written by Dilip Hiro) or the Islamic Republic ( try Michael Axworthy's "Revolutionary Iran"). The saga of the Iranian Air Force in this period is all there.
You made a slight mistake at 5:49, when you mentioned that the two Iraqi Mi-25 Hind helicopters penetrated the border of Iran. The helicopters in this case were Mi-24 Hind's.

It was the weakened Iranian military after the 1979 revolution vs the whole world not just Iraq.
Most people don't know that when the Islamic revolution happened those maniacs killed 13000 highly sophisticated military officers from Shah's military and got rid of many military assets. Also Iraq was armed to the teeth and many countries including US helped them with everything from weapons to strategy to intel. An yet, Iran managed to fight for 8 years and eventually win the war. Iranians have been in war for literally 7500 years and they've fought pretty much every superpower in history from the Greeks and Romans to Egyptian and many others. So you'd be a fool to underestimate them even when they're in their worst condition.

The Arab air force pilots (not just Iraq but also Syria, Egypt, Libya) seem only interesting in learning to fly and land - but have limited training in air-to-air combat. This is explains why Iran, Israel and the US were so successful. But, when you have seconded pilots from foreign countries flying for the Royal Jordanian Air Force in 1967 and the Syrian Air Force in 1973, they show that Soviet aircraft can be quite effective.
Thus, the experience of your opponent is just as important to your success.
You do not know the modern combat! It does not depend on the skill of the pilots, it is more about Radar and Missile ranges!

I was watching a documentary on the Iran-Iraq war, and how the Iranian F14 pilots could not perform certain type of aerial manoeuvres, due to the fact they did not have the right G-suits for the job. Imagine, how many more kills they could have had, had they been equipped properly.

I don't know why F14 was ignored by the US airforce. They were very advanced for that time in terms of electronic warfare systems and very agile, such a beautiful plane...
It had no applications! It was only good for Iran, because in the Zagross mountains there are many radar blind areas to be covered by interceptors! This plane was heavy for the carriers and arriers themselves had good radars

@@1anre F15 showed way earlier then F16, and F18 showed up later fur the navy, so I think that's why the US didn’t adopt it for the airforce the way the Iranians did. I am just guessing, no back ground about that...
