Cost of living ‘driving’ Australians’ thinking

  • Fitzpatrick Advisory Special Counsel Bruce Hawker says the cost of living is “driving” the thinking of Australians at the moment.
According to the latest Newspoll, the Coalition and Labor are polling equal at 50 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.
“My view, and I think it’s one that I’ve maintained consistently as well, is that the government has to be dragging down interest rates, and that means attacking inflation,” Mr Hawker told Sky News Australia.
“Until such time as that happens, I think there’s going to be a lot of uncertainty in the polling, and people are going to be concerned that it’s harder and harder for them to make ends meet - that’s an international problem.
“When those interest rates do come down … then I think we’ll get a better indication of where the two parties stand in the eyes of the electorate.
“What’s really driving people’s thinking at the moment is cost of living.”

Young Australians without a house to inherit - get out! FAR better opportunities overseas. In order to afford a house, or non-crippling rent building ANOTHER’S equity, requires an economic contraction you DO NOT want to be there to experience. Or stay while chanting "lucky country" from either a room in your parent's house, your Chinese-owned rental that leaves you eating cereal for dinner, or your car-house.

Why cost of living in China is still very low while many other countries complaint cost of living going up a lot: China electricity per kWh is still 7 cents Euro during peak hours and 4 cents Euro during off peak hours like 20 years ago. China household water bills is still about 4 Euro per month and one taxi ride start from 2 Euro. One bus ride cost 25 cents Euro. And still no property tax.
Meat, fruit and vegie: beef per kg drop to 6 Euro and pork per kg drop to 3 Euro. Water melon per kg is selling at 11 cents Euro. One meal outside cost 2-4 Euro per person.

@@joebloggs24 You mean $10k Euro per year after tax. I think people in bigger cities make more than this figure. Also many people will receive bonus on top of that.
Even using $10 K, it is not bad when comparing with Europe. Take Germany as example and use 2200 Euro per month as take home pay figure for most German people. That is about 3142 kWh electricity assuming electricity per kWh is 70 cents Euro. On the other hand , China take home pay is 833 Euro per month or 10k Euro per year. At 5.5 cents Euro for one kWh electricity, China take home pay per month can buy 15,151 kWh electricity.

You'll find on lower wages, more of the basics take up more of the wage, so while it may look affordable, most people can only afford what they earn in one day at work as a monthly electricity bill, or about 3% is fairly immaterial. At 833 euro per month, they realistically should keep the figure to >30 per month whereas a wealthier country with more items covered for their workers enable the essentials to be afforded more readily as some efficiencies arise due to economic development.

Climate change makes local council rates and house insurance premiums dearer, and those increases are passed on to the tenants of rental properties. The money required to remediate infrastructure after extreme weather events has to come from somewhere. Insurance companies are like any other form of gambling - the house always wins.
