Nice job on the crew Mike, clever idea fitting different crews at each end. C clips seem to work well. I might try cutting one side of a fibre washer if need be and droping that over the axle
Seems that way, not 100% gone but I like and need it's ability to negotiate sharper than 2nd radi curves. More clips would no doubt solve it completely while of course scale track would negate the need altogether lol
Great to see that a fix has been found, and a pretty straightforward one at that. It's always those little things that they never catch at the factory, I had a similar problem with a 4-4-2 camelback loco where the rear tender pickups were a little squirrely - Turns out the weight in the tender was rear-biased and it just needed ballasting at the front. I like the crew additions on this loco, especially having different figures at either end for different purposes. Always thought it was a bit strange how some ready to run double-ended locos will have a crew in one end and not the other, even though you can't see both at the same time anyways.
Great suggestion Mike, I haven't encountered the curve scrape, but problems with derailment at the dreaded point where my Accurascale Deltic would frequently derail. I see from RM web people are citing issues with the Booster at pointwork, particularly Peco. Have ordered these circlips anyway as they may help reduce the lateral wheel movement. So annoying!
Cheers Chris, do a test for me, have a look and see if the wheels are pulled to one side by the pickups? If they are you might consider using the clips to pull them back over, just one side. That might help with the detailing too
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Thanks Mike, yes after several derailments I could see the middle set of wheels were almost locked to one side. Also the loco would just stall for no reason, I could see that many of the pick-ups were not touching the wheels. It seemed a bit better after my attempt to bend the pickups a bit. It's all bringing back bad memories of my Acurascale Deltic! Curiously both Co-Co locos.
Definitely worth a try. I haven't noticed any scraping sound so far, but this might restrict the axle movement and stop the loss of pick-up contact on the wheels. I will check my stock of circlips and try it whilst I am adding a dcc decoder to my loco in the near future.
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimitedI have checked my large selection of circlips but did not have any of the right size so I have ordered some from Model Fixings as per the video. It may be a while before I get it done, but I'll let you know if it is successful or not.
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I've finally received the circlips and fitted them to the loco using tweezers as you suggested in your video. I've only fitted them to the outer 4 wheels of each bogie as the loco still has to pass over Peco Set track points on my layout. I am glad to say that it does that without hesitation. It seems to have cured the problem of the loss of the pick-up contacts and the loco now runs smoothly throughout. A definite improvement.
Thanks for that tip Mike, mine arrived (CC1) had a hell of a job fitting those pickup shoes though , still only fitted one bogie, also had problems actually putting it on the track due to the middle wheels on each bogie being out of gauge ! Runs OK though, all the best Stewart
Circlips are an interesting if not brilliant solution to removing the lateral play in the axles - well done! 👍 Have a large bag of brass washers for removing the play on many models that are run on Ewhurst Green. Except this requires a strip-down and wheel removal - suspect the CC1 wheel sets are only held in by the bogie frames arrangement. 😉
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Been a few years since I was last there (depot or signal box) - now retired. Would be nice to be in contact - I'm not on social media but can be contacted via BloodandCustard.
ahh, I was hoping you would show me how to alter the headcode discs as despite the fcat they're supposed to 'push fit' I haven't been able to change the ones on mine. I am presuming you pull out the factory fitted one and then push in the blank ones.. or am I being stupid?
Had all five of these running on Ewhurst Green (three were visiting). Only one of the five suffered from a single low-hanging sand pipe - this was easily rectified in seconds with tweezers (all the others were examined). Although all had significant lateral play in the axles (a 'feature' so common on many models) this did not cause issues on large radius finescale track. For those encountering the scraping noise, ModelRailwaysUnlimited's fix with circlips is brilliantly simple. However, as a friend found when he decided to buy one of these locomotives many retailers have already sold out! 😱
Great fix Mike
Thanks 👍

Many thanks 🙏👍 yes that might work, just watch out for interference with the pickups
Nice job fixing the scraping sound. The loco looks so much better with the crew in place. Job well done.
Thanks Roderick 🙂
Glad it was a simple fix!

Excellent detective work Mike, well done and the crew look good too.
Thank you kindly 🙏👍
Genius Mike.
Crew look great too👍
Thanks 👍 most kind
I've found that the sanding delivery pipes rub against the conductor rail! It makes a realistic musical scraping sound!
Do you think EFE designed it that way lol

Upward play in the middle wheel set is the key there I'm sure otherwise the bogies seesaw on the middle wheels on the slightest track bump.

Yes I did Mike but still found it very tricky !

Sorry, if I was doing it I'd be pressing them out from the inside using something blunt????
Hi Mike - Sorry to bother you mate but would the Q1's have been used bet Chi and Littlehampton aswell as down to Bognor?
Regards Chris
HI Chris, very possible! They were again a LSWR region loco but during the war and there after they got everywhere.
Seems like a nice and easy fix! It’s a pity Bachmann/Kernow didn’t do this from the factory though…
Thanks, I think the remit was to make it able to go around sharp curves, easy fix however and no risk
Too many issues out of the box...I'll pass on this one. Nice fix though.
I have to say I'm delighted with mine, niggles nothing more. It's a stunner
I have the same issue , otherwise a brilliant model! Ordering the clips now!
Good luck
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Can't say I'd ever heard of it, so it's not a must have. Wheels scraping and some with wheels clear of the track...nah.
