    As many of you know, I buy a lot of my fish from this store. My discus, some of my peacocks, many of my gobies, my puffers, etc. all came from 6th Ave Aquarium.

    For all you naysayers... notice the bubble stones in most of the tanks... either in sponge filters or by themselves... fish weren’t gasping.

    I have no problem when tanks are " over stocked" when they stay healthy. In China they have very large amounts of fish in each tank and simply filter it better than is typically done in US commercial spaces. It's not the number of fish that counts; it's how well the tank is filtered.

    Because of crowding, central filtration, and high turnover, quarantining would certainly be the key for any oddballs that showed up in good shape in this oddity of a store.

    FYI the aquarium came first before the flowers. And the Altar is to worship God Guan Yu to protect the business. Been shopping at this place since the 1990s. Got all my cichlids from there but wouldn’t recommend to buy equipments or misc stuff from there because you can find cheaper prices on Amazon.

    I lived and worked close to this store in the late 90's and it looks like things have improved. When I used to frequent the store, there was never a time I did not see dead or sick fish, so I tended to get equipment there but not fish. That said, quarantine is the way to go.

  • @NCHornet
    @NCHornet 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Hey Ben, What do you expect being in Frisco, one of the largest groupings of weirdos in the country, lol!!!! I've said it before I just wish I had a fish store of any kind near me. Tanks could have been a bit cleaner, but they were far better than the tanks and any Petsmart or Petco that I have been to. Prices seemed reasonable and fish appeared to be in good shape. The over crowding doesn't bother me so much as long as the water quality was good. I'm sure you have seen the videos about the Fish areas in China where there are fish on top of fish in tanks and most stores had hundreds of fish pre- bagged ready to go and the tanks were the cleanest I have ever seen in any store. My biggest concern is multiple tanks being filtered into the same sump. I understand why they do this but I also understand how fast fish problems can spread from tank to tank when filtered this way. If I owned a fish store the filtration would all be done by sponge filters and frequent water changes. Quarantine would be a must when buying from any fish store but especially one that is filtering multiple tanks with a single filter. Hope the rest of your trip was enjoyable and that you got to spend some quality time with your son. Mine is stationed at Minot AFB in North Dakota and I sure do miss him. I have to ask, does your son have tanks at his house? Have a great day my friend. God Bless

      Kevin Lancaster Hello Kevin, I agree, and no, living in the city he pays an absurd amount of rent for a shared apartment with very limited space, too small even for a tank. And I hear you on missing our kids. I have 4 and only one is local .

  • @TONEScott
    @TONEScott 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure why you would be so concerned with the size of the cubes; they’re all connected to a very large bio filtration system, like almost every aquarium store in the world. Anyway, glad you showed the store. Never been there, but will be visiting soon. Thanks.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @fturla___156

    Yes, I agree. I would buy from that store because all the Petco, PetSmart, and small pet shop stores in my area combined do not have as much of a selection as this store in the video. Just the aquarium maintenance selection was better and the live fish was a bonus. What I was interested in was the live plants that looked particularly more appealing and vibrant compared to the preparation given to the plants where I live. I'm not worried so much about health of the fish because I do medicate and quarantine purchases when it comes to introducing new items into an established aquarium.

    Fish are sold like that in many Asian countries if you watch videos on youtube. There's nothing wrong this because of the high turn over of the fish and well kept water quality with high aeration. I wouldn't have any issue with buying fish from there.

  • @gregvanfleet5586
    @gregvanfleet5586 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very similar to the fish stores here in Hong Kong, I've made a video about it on my channel also. Btw that altar at the end has a statue of Guan Yu, a famous Chinese war general back in the Han dynasty. You'll find a lot of chinese will worship him for health, family harmony, justice, marriage, fertility, prosperity and luck but it's not necessarily a religion in itself.

  • @jeffharris96

    Definitely an Asian theme going on, I have to say that although they may look healthy being stuck in a tiny tank, bag or tiny cup sized container for hours, days or even longer is not my idea of good husbandry.
    We only have to see the source of the Corona virus to see how little they care about the animals they sell whether that be for pet or food.
    Just because a Betta can survive in a tiny container doesn't mean you should keep one in it!
    Would I buy from there.. maybe? But mainly to save the creature from a stressful existence and as you and others have said quarantine would be an absolute must!!!

    • @Micegift
      @Micegift 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff Harris I completely agree! Before I started watching Fishtube last August, I had no never heard about anyone selling Betta’s in a small cup, let alone bagged up, stacked up and ready to go as the UK animal welfare inspectors would be after them so fast, their feet wouldn’t touch the ground.

      Ben Ochart I’ve been meaning to take a drive to Tampa Bay Cichlids for some time now. I spoke to the owner some time ago and I believe he said they were open to the public. I think they’re more of a fish farm type of set up? If it’s the same place. I did mark off a couple of stores that I was going to make day trips of. I’m pretty sure imperial Tropicals was one of them? I’ve unfortunately never been to a place around here that has wowed me yet. The advantages of a self-serve low overhead business is that you can pass on the savings to the consumer. Eyebiters at 2 or 3 for $10, that's a great deal. They were like 4" and close to coloring up.

    I would definitely buy from this store. They’ve proven that they know what they’re doing by staying in business so long. I’m interested in the self service idea. There’s been many a time when I’ve run into rookie employees who didn’t know how to net or bag fish and I had to spend time teaching them how to do it. In that situation, I’d rather do it myself.

Absolutely love this gem. The aquarium store are a rare sight in SF or places in general. Sure you might catch a sick fish but that also happens at big box stores as well. Sure, I would buy fish there. My concern is that the fish look healthy. Unfortunately people often get too caught up in the size of the enclosures when reviewing retail stores. As you said, this is typically a short-term living situation for the fish, and although overcrowding can be stressful, as long as water conditions are good and food supply is good then It won't be detrimental to the long-term health of the fish.
    I raise baby fish and often have aquariums packed with grow outs. All those fish care is that the water is crystal clean and that their bellies are satisfied! Good video, sir. Thanks for sharing.

    Many people wouldn’t buy anything from that store as they were considering this as torturing and mal treating fishes with the size of their enclosures. I bought few fishes there, they’re doing fine. I was at Aquarium Fish Depot down San Diego next to HWY 5. They have a pretty good of fish selection there. If you have a chance, you should go visit.

      Since that SF fish and flower shop is circulating so much water, it’s almost like the fish are in a much bigger tank.
      If I’m ever up that way I’ll visit Exotic for sure!

    Thanks for the video as always Ben, I will buy from the store with qurantine as usual. You showed a fish that Ifg had in one of his videos in Houston tx. It was labelled Protologus in your video, but could not find a fish by that name on google or Yahoo. Do you have another name the fish is known by?

    Greetings from Berkeley. The fish look healthy to me as well. The tanks were not designed to be permanent homes after all. Was hoping to see some multifasciatus though. The TH-cam crowd has gotten me more interested in tanganyikan fish.

    I've recently seen another video about this same store. Different concept for sure, but, as they say if it works don't fix it! I assumed from the first video I saw that they had to have a good turnover rate. The fact that he's been in San Francisco for 35 years speaks for itself. If he wasn't doing things right he wouldn't have lasted that long.

    It is most likely Buddhism that you were wondering about with the altar.. Just my opinion, don't know for sure.. I am half German, half Native American and a Buddhist myself.. Weird combination huh ??
