The best tv show or film dealing with therapy - ever. Sophie was such a great character, she felt very real. Mia Wasikowska blew me away and I looked forward to seeing her in more things, but somehow I thought she was Sophie - I guess I didn't realize what a talented actress she was and that I'd never see Sophie again. It's sad, in a way, but Mia has gone on to create other real and incredible characters. She and Gabriel Byrne were perfection together.
This show was one of the best shows EVER on television! I remember how I cried that first season, especially Mia's character "Sophie", and thought what an extraordinary actress she is! She was utterly convincing. Also, Gabriel Byrnes, Diane Weist, Peter Horton, the ENTIRE cast was phenomenal!!! Thank you HBO!!!

I once told my therapist that I'd been staying up late binge watching In Treatment. I felt weird about it. She mentioned that she hadn't watched the show. A few sessions later, she revealed that she now was also binge watching the show too. She said it was a pretty realistic representation of therapy, and that she had treated other therapists who had similar issues as Paul, including, ew, a few therapists who became sexually involved with clients. Then she suggested I watch The Sopranos.
Its amazing for trainee therapists too :) My lecturer recommended an episode to us in an attempt to help us understand the Gestalt approach and how it's concepts apply in practice, it's great for looking at the psychoanalytic approach too!
I am one and let me say beyond the obvious "hollywoodizing" of therapy this show is pretty acurate of what it is like. Real therapy has nothing to do with television and movies but this show is pretty good at getting to the real stuff. Especially Paul's countertransference for the one client Laura. THAT is real stuff!
I think sophie is the most interesting character of all in this series.. Besides Paul of course. Anyway,, I think this show has got the greatest script of any tv-series ever..
