    Y’know, Baizhu story quest is one of the most important thing that makes me pull for him. He reminds me of ... real life doctors and nurses. Back when covid-19 was around and everyone was fighting back, doctors-nurses were and are still now, real heroes. On the news, i have seen doctors and nurses giving their all just to save people. Some of them cried because it was too stressful and they couldn’t save all of the patients. Sacrifice your blood-sweat-tears for the well-being of another person makes me wanna cry.

      Baizhu : i want people to live...

      Baizhu : ... and be immortal

    to me, Baizhu's actions and choices in particular, despite how the end of the quest kinda glorifies them, are meant to be seen as a bad thing. His motivations are very noble and pure, which in of itself is something to be admired, but his methods are self-destructive to a horrific and unfathomable extreme, due to how selfless he is and how little self-esteem he clearly has (basically none). He claims to understand that it was wrong for his predecessors to sacrifice themselves with the contract because it hurt the people around them, not even realizing that he's doing the exact same thing to those who care about him, and that simply becoming immortal so that he doesn't die wouldn't solve the problem and make things any better, because having to suffer with an infinite and growing number of illnesses for all eternity is a fate far worse than death. It's TERRIFYING when you really, truly think about the implications of what he's putting himself through, and what he _wants_ to put himself through. In his lore, it says he was one of the only survivors of a plague that wiped out his village when he was young, and the only survivor of his family, so it's not a stretch to say that he most definitely has extreme trauma and survivor's guilt, which feeds into his obsessive need to save as many people as he can, forever, no matter what the cost to himself is. He's such an unbearably tragic character, and I desperately want him to one day understand how loved he is and how much it hurts those around him to see him suffer, before it's too late.......

      TRUEEEEE BAIZHU FOR THE W

      My thesis for why people did and still do see Baizhu as potentially malicious/evil/dark is a combined impact of coding, trope bleed, and the void people want to fill in Genshin's story map. Coding and Trope Bleed kinda go together, but "the search for immortality" is almost always coded as a negative thing. It's usually a story about hubris, about mortals infringing on the territory of the gods, about greed, about failing to value what is important in life, about wasting that life chasing something impossible when it could be better spent truly living. Baizhu's story touches a bit on all of those themes too, but it chooses to take a more original approach to them by framing him as noble instead of greedy or selfish, and giving him an excess of humility instead of a lack.
      I think this is actually very consistent with the overall theme of Genshin Impact. Going all the way back to the starting cutscene and the comic where Vanessa ascends to Celestia, as well as the other story beats that build on that concept, it's clear that one of the most central themes of Genshin is the idea of mortal ascension and what that might look like, what the results might be, and the various ways that characters strive for it. For a character like Hu Tao or Chonyun, that ascension is about legacy- they both strive to live up to and carry on a generational legacy that will outlast them as mortals. For a character like Baizhu, it's about outplaying the bounds of mortality itself and finding a way to both "have his cake and eat it too".
      I don't think it's inherently a bad thing- after all, that perspective would insist that many forms of lifesaving medical treatment are inhumane because they extend life in exchange for a lower quality of said life- amputations, chemotherapy, lots of pharmaceuticals with side effects, any treatment that will require lifetime maintenance and support, and even organ transplants (which if you did not know, come with a literal expiration date on them in many cases!). While for some I think this IS an unfair and undesirable trade, for a lot of people who have actually had those medical treatments and procedures, it is very much is not the case. Depending on one's personal beliefs about death and the afterlife (or lack thereof), ANY method of prolonging life might be preferable to the end, no matter how agonizing or unpleasant or different from prior life states that it may be. If you believe there's just- nothing, when the end comes, then it might make sense that even if you exist only as an agentless grain of sand doomed to only pain and suffering, it's better than ceasing to exist and having even that taken away from you.
      The last and I think bigger reason that people characterize him this way is the same reason they did it to Kokomi and Albedo, and to a lesser extent many other characters in the game. Players want a real antihero or more dark minded character to get behind. A lot of things in Genshin allude to darkness, but usually only ever as something awful to be fought or something flawed to be overcome. The rare character with hints of darkness, like Xiao or Scaramouce/Wanderer or even Rosaria, are wildly popular due to bucking the tonal trend of Genshin characters being overwhelmingly bright and happy and "pure" feeling. People really really want that darkness in someone we're supposed to like and root for, which is why Kokomi's in-story reveal was a bit disappointing and why so many people are still holding out for a darker Baizhu characterization even when it's clear (at least, to me) that they haven't gone in that direction. To 'justify' that hold out, they'll pick apart and mischaracterize evidence from the story so their desires feel more plausible.

    Im so glad you talked about why people think Baizhu is creepy. As a fan of him for 3 years the things we had to put up with in this community is crazy, from people calling him abuser to straight up pdfile all because of one sentence from Qiqi's character story or because of "his voice" which is ridiculous. So glad all the bs rumors were cleared up with this quest. Sadly i still see a few people believe those rumors even after this dropped. Is it that hard to believe a man can be a caring father figure?

    Story quest trials don't get real builds. They get their signature and a placeholder noblesse.
    Only the banner trial and combat events get real builds with proper artefacts.

      I mean nothing wrong…but like the VA’s still have to go through auditions and testings, so it’s not like the VA company is saving time by recruiting the VAs from star rail…if that was the case then all Genshin VAs would be in star rail considering Genshin is older

    • @octo448
      @octo448 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@midnashadow8439 It is the difference between an inside hire and an outside hire. There is still a process yes, but the process is much more streamlined for actors who have already worked on Hoyoverse contracts in the past. Both the hiring part, since Hoyoverse would know from the get-go if an actor has the schedule and versatility for the role, but also the paperwork and contracting part. Most legal and HR departments have a super fast process for either rehiring or recasting someone who works for the company already. Hiring actors who they are already familiar with or well liked is probably high on their priority list, as long as they have someone who suits the vision for the character.
      That's why there IS a ton of overlap in the HSR and the Genshin cast in every single language. I made the list for the Korean voice cast, but I know similar lists exist for Genshin. Here's the (not recently updated) list for Korean HSR and Genshin impact.
