I really like short, interesting bits of true history like this. I also enjoy the old fashioned style artwork that accompanies each story. Great channel. 👍
I confess, I didn't know a lot about Madagascar before this. Sure, I knew facts about some lemurs, and I'll never forget the fossa and the now-extinct Megaladapis, but aside from the fact that it's home to a lot of vanilla plants and cacao trees (and a pretty good series of Dreamworks films), I had no idea what its political climate was like back then.
Truthfully, I knew nothing about Madagascar either. I stumbled upon this gem while searching for peculiar and perplexing personalities from Africa, a continent whose curious characters have been a bit underrepresented in our quirky chronicles.
OMGGGG thank you so much ! Malagasy girl here 🇲🇬 so yeah , my queen 😅. It's a bit funny to hear an Englishman pronounce the name of my country's historical figures but anyway , her reign could endeed be qualified as "tyranny" , she owned a visceral hate against Christianity and foreigners because she felt ( or knew ? ) that the malagasy people would lose their traditional roots and that the royal blood would lose its influence hence be overthrown. I don't defend her , nobody could. Our history books clearly underline how insane this woman is ( eg: she would organise tournaments of our national sport which is called "moraingy" and basically , it's like matiral arts , a kind of sport only destined to men as it was a way to prove their virility. Anyway , sometimes and to her joy the losing opponent would die and she then reward the winner by sleeping with her but nobody knew about that last part , she made sure that not even a rumor about it would run in the capital by killing ever suspects and even sometimes her own guards but idk she also slept with her guards or whatever. So as i said , the winner would be rewarder but because she's also an insane sadist , she would also kill him after the deed and throw him in the nearest river. Anybody that would dare to have any suspicions about her would eliminated because at that time , queens and kings or just basically the royal blood but also most importantly the owners of the crown were seen as divine , even the direct intermediate between god and the normies. But yeah , she would also sleep with prisoners when she wanted and they would then be executed in front of her the next morning. Oh , also some people speculate that she *might* be a zoophile and try to do things with the zebus she owned ??! Yeah , she was insane. Also , she might have killed her husband. So yeah thank you for covering this topic :) Also sorry for all the mistakes i made lol , English is my third language 😅
Thank you so much for your illuminating comment! You clearly know heaps more about Ranavalona than I did. Your historical haul is hugely helpful! From your fascinating facts, it seems Ranavalona was even more wacky and wild than I imagined. Her extraordinary eccentricities make her a top-tier tyrant in the annals of absurdity. Leaders like Ranavalona present quite a historical conundrum. On one hand, their vicious villainy is undeniable. On the other, perhaps their ferocity was a fateful necessity to fend off even fouler foes. Toss in the treacherous tides of colonization, and the plot thickens more than royal porridge. Thanks for shedding light on this captivating queen’s crazy chronicles!
It's interesting that Ranavalona tried to get rid of all the missionaries, but after she died they came in droves. I almost feel sorry for her, trying to retain the autonomy of her country. LOL.
Ah, the perplexing paradox of the peculiar and perilous Ranavalona! On one hand, she was a stalwart sentinel against sneaky colonial schemers, a legitimate legacy of resistance. Yet, on the other, she was a monstrous matriarch, meting out misery to her own masses. Quite the conundrum, isn't it?
