  • A female hyena together with other members kills a cub from another female on H1-3 at Kruger national park.
    We encountered a huge pack of hyenas with several babies and they were just socializing together and then all of a sudden one-off the female hyena kills the cub from another hyena. The remaining pack attacked the female mother who was defending her cub. Later, the emotion of the hyena was clear to see on the videos.
    It all happened on H-1-3 roughly 23 k's from Satara rest camp.
    Note: A few days later on the same spot a male lion killing another baby from this hyena group.
    The male lion kills the hyena baby also on H1-3 23 km from Satara rest camp KNP.
    We were driving on H1-3 and we found a male lion next to the road staring at hyenas. All of a sudden he decided to attack, he took the smallest hyena which did not run away and killed it.
    Does anybody have thoughts on why the female killed the baby from the other female?
    They were from the same clan.... I guess that the female who killed the baby was the leader of the clan as after she attacked the baby the males finished the job.

    Sorry but the way the title is worded, it seemed like the female hynae killed a lion cub, and then the male lion retaliated by killing one of the hynae cubs.

      That's an extremely obvious statement. Lions are larger, more powerful animals than hyenas one on one, but enough hyenas can and do trouble lions and kill them also. It's simply nature, dear, and not two sports teams. The ancient rivalry and never ending wars between these incredible apex predators is and always will be fascinating. Look at the big picture and simply try to appreciate that.

      These days people expect Disney stories. Children are so sheltered from true nature, learning that human emotions apply to animals, when it just doesn't. I am not saying they don't experience emotions, but it is not the same. The animal kingdom is very different. Motives are very different. Survival of the species is everything. Most adult animals will sacrifice their young for the greater good of survival. The harsh reality of survival is never seen in those Disney movies.

  • @tobyihli9470
    @tobyihli9470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Male lions are not built for hunting, nor really for fighting each other. They have evolved to kill hyenas. Without at least one really big male, any pride, no matter how large, is in great danger of running into a super pack of hyenas, and if it’s large enough, a super pack will kill all the cubs, and some females.
    An adult lion is such an overmatch for hyenas, he can quickly dispatch with an adult hyena, and simply ignore all the ones mobbing him.
    His mane is so distinct and is seen at great distances, that the hyenas can see him and alert whether upwind or downwind. This way, the hyenas avoid the pride, and he conserves his energy, and his clear state of mind. Huge adrenaline dumps destroy hormone receptors, like serotonin, in animals just like in humans, so the health of the pride depends on avoiding all the constant turmoil, and a huge beacon like his mane does just the trick!
    Another interesting fact is that male lion brothers, same mom and same dad, will attack a prides alpha male together, often killing him, and all of his offspring. It’s sad, but a pride of lions is much safer, deadlier, and remains tranquil and stable much longer with three alpha male brothers, all working as one. One of the keys to long term success for a lion pride is how well it handles the hyena threat, and with how much effort..

      Lions, which you incorrectly stated as “male lions” (lion is the masculine term and refers exclusively to the males, while lioness is the feminine term and refers exclusively to the females) are quite adept and successful hunters on their own. That they don’t, won’t it can’t hunt well is a common misconception.
      Being the largest African cat, and the second fastest of all cats, they are extremely well equipped to feed themselves if needed.
      That they do not regularly hunt as part of the pride is easily explained by their limited number in the pride (usually only one adult male, though now and then sibling brothers will rule a pride together) and their role as protectors of the pride, which they cannot do well if injured hunting.
