- In 1980, the National Galleries of Scotland bought a painting by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein for £100,000, and were greeted with uproar that so much money had been spent on a comic book.
From its controversial origins, how has 'In The Car' become such an iconic artwork?
In this new series of five films, Questions about Art, we'll explore some frequent musings about art - using questions asked by our audiences. What makes a painting iconic? Who decides what art is worth? Why can’t I touch artworks when I'm in a gallery? Check back weekly for new videos, and get involved in the comments below.

This piece’s appeal is pretty straightforward…two gorgeous, idealized human beings in a mysterious scene. And the color palette is ridiculously vibrant.
I've just watched this while sitting in my home here in San Francisco (covid-19 lockdown) -- and THANK YOU for this! It's really wonderful. I'm a native of San Francisco and I love Scotland. I have been visiting frequently (since 1983!) and think Scotland's museums are so good -- from the National Museum of Scotland, National, Portrait and Modern Art ones in Edinburgh to Kelvingrow, Aberdeen, Perth. And this website is really excellent (and I create them for a living so -- kudos!)
I’m so glad I ran into this channel. Such a great video essay 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Glad you enjoy it!
I was intereated by the title and thumb nail, but knew I needed to watch this when I found out it was by you guys. Loved the video! Fantastic essay. Educational, informative, interesting, and engaging. I've always been fascinated by pop art, but this made it even cooler. Look forward to watching more of your content!

Appropriation in visual art is equivalent to sampling in music, i think..
Great analogy
I do both, painting and making sample-based music, and I can confirm that both desires come from the same place
Madonna must of pulled inspiration from Lichtenstein✨ Iconic controversy indeed
Media determines the “importance” of objects and events . . . i.e. controversy. 😎
