I didn't trust Ledger for awhile back when we had to download apps from google, which really only had like 3-4 options of coins to download google apps, and lost a lot of my crypto which is still out there and I don't know how to get those back. Back then you had to put every coin under some type of Bitcoin or Eth wallet and name it something and a lot of people got screwed, don't know if you remember those times. Thanks, this is a MUST see video. I wasn't expecting you to go into the details of how to stay in ETH and be able to use DeFi with Ledger/MetaMask... I've been wanting to learn about that, glad you covered that, just knocked off 2 birds w/ 1 stone. Deff. got a new subscriber. I have had a coach help me around metamask, make purchases etc but it seems so complicated I cannot seem to understand or stop my head from doing mental summersaults. I feel like my metamask is a mess, I have lost accounts, lost assets and do not know where to find them. I have a Trezor but didn't like this as I cannot see my BNB on Trezor, however I do recall myself using my Trezor to store my BNB, somehow it ended up on two different accounts, I can see one but not the other. I have since started using Ledger which I prefer. How do I unscramble eggs in relation to my metamask. What you showed me in this video seems so simple and yet so complicated and unnecessary, how do you keep track of what you are doing and where you are doing it🙃. Where should I start to work out where stuff is and how to properly manage metamask? How long have you been doing this? I am 10 months into crypto and don't understand this stuff. Help!

Wow, even though you did an awesome job outlining every step slowly and clearly (a rare trait in 'how to' crypto vids)...I'm still scared to take my coins off an exchange. This is so many steps, no wonder folks are intimidated by crypto. (And I've been in it since 2-16). I don't have hardware wallet yet but came to learn metamask, then onto exodus or something similar (won't keep stuff on metamask, yikes).
You NEVER want to leave your crypto on an exchange. That is crypto 101. Hopefully since it's been a year since this post, you already know that by now. When FTX collapsed, lots of people and projects lost millions because they had their crypto on an exchange that they thought they could trust! Just don't do it.

Can anyone help me reestablish my ledgers on metamask. Metamask crashed, I imported, added my seed phrase, shows my ledgers are paired but do not show as accounts. Metamask was unable to help me and ledger support has not helped me either

I still have some standalone MetaMask accounts in addition to my ledger protected ones. But some people feel it’s better to transfer everything to the ledger protected accounts it’s more secure it’s entirely up to you.

That is what I would do. The safest place is your Ledger accounts. Its going to cost some gas fees obviously so be mindful. If its small amounts maybe leave on meta. Large amounts you should transfer I think.

I hope I am now right in thinking that if I follow all your instructions, there is nothing stopping me from transferring coins that were in the default MetaMask wallets to the new Ledger account wallet? Great video, how would you go about importing an existing Metamask wallet to a new Ledger wallet if the Metamask wallet assets are being used as collateral on AAVE for other borrowed assets. Is it possible and how can it be done to absolutely avoid liquidation of collateral etc?
Actually what I mean is how would I use my Ledger nano 2 to sign any transactions on the AAVE wrapped market dashboard for example AWBTC but I guess thinking about it, it's just a case of withdrawing them from the market, then sending to my new ledger wallet within Metamask and then 're-supplying' them to the market. Of course impossible to do that without repaying the 'borrows' on AAVE to allow a liquidation free withdrawal from the market?
Yes, you are correct. There is no way to "add ledger support" to an existing wallet. In other words there is no way to "change" the seed phrase (or private key) of an existing wallets. You have correctly determined that you will have to unwind or "de-stake" all of the assets you are currently managing in the standalone MetaMask wallet/account and transfer that to the Ledger-based MetaMask wallet/account. From there you can re-stake or re-renter any liquidity pools you were in before. Make sure to use the Ethereum app on your device to manage any accounts withing MetaMask regardless of the chain you are using in Metamask (Polygon. BSC, Avalanche, Arbitrum etc. can all be managed using the Ethereum app)

No, there’s no way to add ledger support to existing MetaMask accounts. You’re going to have to create new accounts based on your ledger device and transfer crypto from the other accounts into the new accounts

From 16:20min onward you explain how to move assets from a standalone MetaMask to the ledger-protected MM. I got that to work and am seeing the assets in my leder-protected MM account. However, is it correct that none of the tokens show up in Ledger Live under the Etherium account? It always says "0 ETH". Thanks!
It depends on which ERC 20 tokens you move into the ledger protected wallet. Most of the major ones should show up in your Ledger Live Ethereum wallet. And if you don’t have any Ethereum in there at all I would suggest you put a little bit in there for gas fees. However some ERC 20 tokens will not show up in Ledger Live. You’ll have to wait for Ledger Live to support them. But you should be able to see them in MetaMask if you do a token import.
@@CryptoDad It looks like only tokens on the Ethereum blockchain will show up in Ledger Live. Tokens on Polygon, BSC, Fantom, and other block chains based on the EVM are not visible in Ledger Live but are visible in your Metamask Ledger wallet. Is this correct?

Question, just trying to understand more how wallets and blockchains interact: If you lose your MM information, but have your ledger account on it, you could get everything back by loading a new MM wallet and connecting your Ledger to that one? Or if you lose access to the MM wallet your Ledger is connected through, you lose it all?
Hi CryptoDad, a related question, if link made a ronin wallet with a hardware wallet I easily restore with phrase seed and buying a new hardware wallet, but if I can't buy a new one... can I log my seed phrases in ronin wallet in order just to send my coins to a secure address meanwhile i recive a hardware wallet?

Great content, question i've been able to hydrate with the ledger, now when i attempt to hydrate and hit the confirm button it skips the enabled step and goes directly to metamask and on metamask it says pending and stays there and does nothing, any suggestions?

I followed the exact same process to connect MM to Ledger ETH account. One day later (2 weeks ago) the account was drained ~ 80K. If MMask did not compromise security and if the Ledger seed phrase was on paper and secure how would this happen. There is a hole somewhere - but so far, everyone says "it wasn't us - you must have exposed your key or signed a bad contract." But I didn't sign a contract and the only public address was the ETH public key on Discord seeking help to check the Ledger ETH account to verify a recent trade confirmed on Arbitrium (the Layer 2 trades are not visible on Ledger). Yes, I could have checked on Arbiscan but I wanted to make certain I could see and make a future trade with the ETH. Thoughts?
Although what you described was straightforward, people might have other chains integrated with a hot ver. of MetaMask. So that is a different level of complexity, I suppose.
Hi !! I have my metamask wallet with many accounts and tokens in them. I exported these accounts to my new nano S plus ledger, using the BIPP44 option to choose my accounts that already existed in metamask. Now I need a new empty account in metamask and that is protected by my Ledger like the rest of the accounts. Can I choose any of the new accounts that appear when I use the BIPP44 option? Thanks.

Yes, you can. Basically you can use your ledger with as many different copies of Metamask as you would like. Each copy of meta mask may have its own standalone accounts, but every time you had a new account based on a ledger device, it will reflect the wallets that are managed by the Ledger device.

Yes you can connect pre existing LEDGER accounts to your Metamask. But you cannot add ledger support to pre existing STANDALONE MetaMask accounts. You will need to transfer those assets to a Ledger based account if you want to secure them with a ledger
Great video of information. At time 3:30, you mention the hardware device will not add protection to an existing account. Is there any way to add secondary security to accounts that have crypto in them? For example, I have my crypto staked and I am unable to end-stake without losing all of my investment and these stakes are set to mature many years out. Thanks in advance for any input. Btw, I am now using a hardware wallet address for future investments
Well in your case you’re going to have to stick with the wallet you’re currently using since you cannot unstake. But generally if you’re using a wallet that is not as secure as you would like, the solution is to transfer it to a more secure wallet. In other words if you have a standalone wallet that is not using a ledger, then to add ledger security you would create a brand new wallet using a ledger and transfer your assets there. But in your case it sounds like you’re sort of stuck. However if you are able to unstake what you are currently staking, then you could transfer it to a new ledger based wallet and then re-steak. But I don’t know what you’re unbonding period is.

@@LarenCyr The only real way to add any additional security to that wallet is to basically tighten up the physical security around it. Make sure you have a password on your computer keep your doors and windows locked, that sort of thing.
When i connect my metamask to the ledger it shows multiple ethereum accounts in zero to link. But when I go to my ledger accounts it just shows one where I have QNT but in the metamask it does. Not show
You can go to the account section in Ledger Live and then click add account if you wish to add additional Ethereum accounts. However, in Ledger Live, the previous account has to have at least one transaction. Only then will it allow you to add an additional empty Ethereum account. That’s just the way ledger live works. All of those additional empty accounts you see in MetaMask will be revealed in Ledger Live if you continue to add accounts, but you will only see that opportunity once the previous account has at least one transaction.
I add the same one that was alreasy on my ledger with some QNT on it, I checked the adress. In that particular account I have QNT but is not showing on my Metamask

You can only connect your ledger to the desktop version of MetaMask. Although there are some other hardware wallets that work with the mobile version of MetaMask such as Keystone.
I have two metamask apps and want both eth addresses on my ledger how do I do this? I want to wrap my flare token on the ftso. But when I connect my elder it does not show the address for my eth address which is my flare address. Thank you crypto Dad
Maybe you discuss it, I am only 1/2 way through the video....but if I lose access to my Metamask (lost password for example)....can I create a new Metamask wallet and simply import the exact same Ledger account that I had on the old Metamask? So I have a Metamask wallet w/ a Ledger 1 account, that has 10 avax. I lose my Metamask password. Can I create a new Metamask wallet and import that Ledger account and find my 10 avax?
That is what your backup phrase is for. Just delete the extension and reinstall. Import your backup phrase and set a new password. You can then re-import/re-connect your Ledger device.
@@CryptoDad OK, I should have been more clear....if I lose everything for Metamask....since all my stuff is now on Ledger, if one no longer has any MM info (seed or password), can you just make a new MM, new seed, new password and then link it to the same address on Ledger and you should have everything back that was already in there?
Hey Dad :D Thank you very much for the video. I followed all the steps and now my metamask is linked to the ledger. The contract is the same for both but when I transfer my crypto from another wallet to the metamask the amount is not updateding into the Ledger App, so I can see how many crypto I have looking into the metamask directly, but not in the ledger app. Am I missing something? T_T Maybe because the crypto I have in the metamask only have balance into the smart chain and not in the ethereum chain? For example I have BNB0.0669, but this doesn't show inside the ledger.
Your BNB won’t show up in your Ethereum wallet because it’s on the Binance Smart Chain. I’m assuming that that BNB is Binance Smart chain. If you would like to see it in Ledger Live, then choose “add account” in the top right and choose BNB.

How is the method you described for transferring assets to the Ledger a/c different from just clicking on "transfer between accounts" instead?

You have correctly determined that you will have to unwind or "de-stake" all of the assets you are currently managing in the standalone MetaMask wallet/account and transfer that to the Ledger-based MetaMask wallet/account. From there you can re-stake or re-renter any liquidity pools you were in before. Make sure to use the Ethereum app on your device to manage any accounts withing MetaMask regardless of the chain you are using in Metamask (Polygon. BSC, Avalanche, Arbitrum etc. can all be managed using the Ethereum app)

No, there’s no way to add ledger support to existing MetaMask accounts. You’re going to have to create new accounts based on your ledger device and transfer crypto from the other accounts into the new accounts

From 16:20min onward you explain how to move assets from a standalone MetaMask to the ledger-protected MM. I got that to work and am seeing the assets in my leder-protected MM account. However, is it correct that none of the tokens show up in Ledger Live under the Etherium account? It always says "0 ETH". Thanks!
It depends on which ERC 20 tokens you move into the ledger protected wallet. Most of the major ones should show up in your Ledger Live Ethereum wallet. And if you don’t have any Ethereum in there at all I would suggest you put a little bit in there for gas fees. However some ERC 20 tokens will not show up in Ledger Live. You’ll have to wait for Ledger Live to support them. But you should be able to see them in MetaMask if you do a token import.

Question, just trying to understand more how wallets and blockchains interact: If you lose your MM information, but have your ledger account on it, you could get everything back by loading a new MM wallet and connecting your Ledger to that one? Or if you lose access to the MM wallet your Ledger is connected through, you lose it all?

Hi CryptoDad, a related question, if link made a ronin wallet with a hardware wallet I easily restore with phrase seed and buying a new hardware wallet, but if I can't buy a new one... can I log my seed phrases in ronin wallet in order just to send my coins to a secure address meanwhile i recive a hardware wallet?

I followed the exact same process to connect MM to Ledger ETH account. One day later (2 weeks ago) the account was drained ~ 80K. If MMask did not compromise security and if the Ledger seed phrase was on paper and secure how would this happen. There is a hole somewhere - but so far, everyone says "it wasn't us - you must have exposed your key or signed a bad contract." But I didn't sign a contract and the only public address was the ETH public key on Discord seeking help to check the Ledger ETH account to verify a recent trade confirmed on Arbitrium (the Layer 2 trades are not visible on Ledger). Yes, I could have checked on Arbiscan but I wanted to make certain I could see and make a future trade with the ETH. Thoughts?

Although what you described was straightforward, people might have other chains integrated with a hot ver. of MetaMask. So that is a different level of complexity, I suppose.
Hi !! I have my metamask wallet with many accounts and tokens in them. I exported these accounts to my new nano S plus ledger, using the BIPP44 option to choose my accounts that already existed in metamask. Yes, you can. Basically you can use your ledger with as many different copies of Metamask as you would like. Each copy of meta mask may have its own standalone accounts, but every time you had a new account based on a ledger device, it will reflect the wallets that are managed by the Ledger device.

Yes you can connect pre existing LEDGER accounts to your Metamask. But you cannot add ledger support to pre existing STANDALONE MetaMask accounts. You will need to transfer those assets to a Ledger based account if you want to secure them with a ledger

Great video of information. At time 3:30, you mention the hardware device will not add protection to an existing account. Is there any way to add secondary security to accounts that have crypto in them? For example, I have my crypto staked and I am unable to end-stake without losing all of my investment and these stakes are set to mature many years out. Thanks in advance for any input. Btw, I am now using a hardware wallet address for future investments
Well in your case you’re going to have to stick with the wallet you’re currently using since you cannot unstake. But generally if you’re using a wallet that is not as secure as you would like, the solution is to transfer it to a more secure wallet. In other words if you have a standalone wallet that is not using a ledger, then to add ledger security you would create a brand new wallet using a ledger and transfer your assets there. But in your case it sounds like you’re sort of stuck. However if you are able to unstake what you are currently staking, then you could transfer it to a new ledger based wallet and then re-steak. But I don’t know what you’re unbonding period is.

From what i've been able to understand and you have confirmed this, that there is no way at this point to secure that wallet address. seems like im stuck. at this point im not very worried about but i did want to add extra security. @@LarenCyr The only real way to add any additional security to that wallet is to basically tighten up the physical security around it. Make sure you have a password on your computer keep your doors and windows locked, that sort of thing.
When i connect my metamask to the ledger it shows multiple ethereum accounts in zero to link. But when I go to my ledger accounts it just shows one where I have QNT but in the metamask it does. Not show
You can go to the account section in Ledger Live and then click add account if you wish to add additional Ethereum accounts. However, in Ledger Live, the previous account has to have at least one transaction. Only then will it allow you to add an additional empty Ethereum account. That’s just the way ledger live works. All of those additional empty accounts you see in MetaMask will be revealed in Ledger Live if you continue to add accounts, but you will only see that opportunity once the previous account has at least one transaction.
I add the same one that was alreasy on my ledger with some QNT on it, I checked the adress. In that particular account I have QNT but is not showing on my Metamask

You can only connect your ledger to the desktop version of MetaMask. Although there are some other hardware wallets that work with the mobile version of MetaMask such as Keystone.

Maybe you discuss it, I am only 1/2 way through the video....but if I lose access to my Metamask (lost password for example)....can I create a new Metamask wallet and simply import the exact same Ledger account that I had on the old Metamask?

That is what your backup phrase is for. Just delete the extension and reinstall. Import your backup phrase and set a new password. You can then re-import/re-connect your Ledger device.
@@CryptoDad OK, I should have been more clear....if I lose everything for Metamask....since all my stuff is now on Ledger, if one no longer has any MM info (seed or password), can you just make a new MM, new seed, new password and then link it to the same address on Ledger and you should have everything back that was already in there?

Hey Dad :D Thank you very much for the video. I followed all the steps and now my metamask is linked to the ledger. The contract is the same for both but when I transfer my crypto from another wallet to the metamask the amount is not updateding into the Ledger App, so I can see how many crypto I have looking into the metamask directly, but not in the ledger app. Am I missing something? T_T Maybe because the crypto I have in the metamask only have balance into the smart chain and not in the ethereum chain? For example I have BNB0.0669, but this doesn't show inside the ledger.
Your BNB won’t show up in your Ethereum wallet because it’s on the Binance Smart Chain. I’m assuming that that BNB is Binance Smart chain. If you would like to see it in Ledger Live, then choose “add account” in the top right and choose BNB.
