- This extract is taken from a concert organised by An Lanntair, an award-winning arts centre in Stornoway, Outer Hebrides.
The concert was part of Purvai 2016, lanntair.com/cr... and featured Roopa Panear on Sitar and Dalbir Singh Rattan on Tabla.
This piece is the opening of the second half of the performance, Raag Suha.

my reverences for the little I know of the classical music of India, were devoted to Ravi Shankar and Anousha Shankar on sitar, but now, after seeing and listening to Roopa Panesar I will include her in that in the world of Saraswati

Both Roopa and Rattan have given great justice to the beautiful rag Suha. So sweet, so rhythmic. Their joy of performance is the joy of audience. Bleassed are they ever.

A very renowned bandish in Raag Suha from Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana : "Tu Hai Mohammed Shah, Darbar Nizamuddin So Jaane". Beautifully rendered.

Great performance. Very lively. The best Suha Kanada I've heard is a vocal rendition by Pt Bhimsen Joshi
She is playing the “Tu Hain Mohammadshah” bandish of Bhimsen Joshi.

Thanks Rauf, I agree, we sadly only had one camera for this performance. Roopa is performing for us in Leeds in June, so will have 2/3 camera angles for her performance there.

Of the great Indian music what has lately caught the ears abroad is the noisy Bollywood music. Of course, film music once played a significant role to liberate the Gharana based classical music. Even then, illustrious musicians like Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan and Raees Khan Saheb took courage to experiment with the ultimate beauty of a Raga played on an instrument and would often break into sing a snippet of a composition that would take the audience to a level of such engrossment that they would ask for more. They just without any reservation conveyed the thrill what they felt. When Polydor Record started their label in Mumbai, their very innovative A&R Manager Virendra Luther asked me to dub over a Greek instrumental which I found to be a strange version of Raga Bhairavi. We recorded it, but it was never released commercially. Beautiful. Subtle layakari too. Suggest playing with a bass tabla. Sounds mellow. The saval java is best avoided

@Manas Chakraborty Thank you for answering. I am not familiar with Shiva, but I am happy this music is being adopted in non-Indian cultures, which means a lot. There is something universal, supra-human in musical creation.
