THIS was the real PBS Kids, along with old Sesame Street, Barney, Lamb Chops Play Along, Mister Rogers, Theodore Tugboat, Where in Time is Carmen San Diego, Between the Lions, Dragon Tales, etc. God, I miss the 90's.
Crystal Dominique If they did remakes of the classics, they wouldn’t be as good as the original ones because they’ll probably make it overrated. That’s why I think they should re-air the classics!
GaruruTheWolf couldn’t have said it better myself. It always sparked a sense of wonder and awe in me as a kid, and I remember thinking, why does this silly children’s program have a serious, melodic theme song with beautiful piano accompaniment, when none of the other programs do?
I hope in God's mercy that George is in a better place. His foul mouth and foul disposition towards God and religion hid his passion for this, and that he did try to get people to live better lives with his snark. I hope to see him in the Hereafter.
Man.. Can't believe I'm 30. It's crazy how innocent kids shows were back then. I always wanted my parents to buy me a toy Thomas The Train back then but by the time they got around to buying one for me I had already been into GI Joe and Nintendo and didn't want anything else.
Super Cosmic Mutant Honey Candle Squid Exactly! I always catch it near the end of the show before it was over. As a young boy I was kinda too young to understand what the show was really about. The song makes me feel lonely when seeing a train traveling by itself lol.
A lot of Joe Raposo’s songs are like that. In addition to this he also wrote: “Somebody Come and Play”; “Bein’ Green” from Sesame Street; He also wrote “Sing” which was on Sesame Street, but was most well know for the version the Carpenters recorded. All of them - IMHO - have that same sadness, or yearning, or wistfulness at their core.
Some of the episodes are about topics that are still hot issues: environmentalism, bigotry, superstition (literally!). I think it would still be much appreciated if anyone knew about it - or more than that it was a front for Thomas!
I swear if I ever get to run a steam locomotive, I want this song playing as I blare the whistle and pull the throttle. Childhood memories will always last.
Same, except I'd have Last Train Home by the Pat Metheny Group playing. My dream is to run either the SP&S 700 (4-8-4) or the SP 4449 (4-8-4), both housed at the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation (ORHF) enginehouse/museum in Portland, Oregon.
This is what I want to play at my funeral. Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends is and always was very important to me and it was because of this wonderful program that I was able to bring them into my life. Nothing beats the classics.
i was born in 1991. man this makes me feel like a 2 year old little baby boy again. i miss this show. this was wen life was perfect. and i loved trains and still do til this day
I like trains when I'm not trying to sleep. Stayed one night in Sandusky at the KOA and liked it until I had trains waking me up. So, trains are good when I'm awake only.

I remember this show from my childhood. Like other shows from my youth, it was a genuinely great one that taught valuable lessons about life and learning, something most shows this day lack. Great intro and ending song that really brings an emotional aspect to it. Thanks for bringing back something from my childhood that I truly loved :)
I'm now leaving my adulthood (for now) and revisiting this! Now I will never forget it again till the real very end! My passport to my childhood partly started from here!
Every time I hear that theme, I always think of my childhood and I get tears in my eyes. I always loved Thomas. Heck, even my nephew loves him and I even made him a Thomas pillow. I would love to introduced him to Shining Time Station one day. I would also like to add that back in 2012, I got to see the steam locomotive that was feature in the intro and the ending of this series. It's the Union Pacific 844.
Anyone else remember during long school breaks (like spring break or long weekends) where they would show marathons of Shining Time Station or Sqaure One TV? Maybe just on my local PBS channel.
My God!!! I'm like literally in tears right now, to say that I've been touched by the nostalgia of it all. I haven't heard this theme song in over 30 years, but it sure feels good to be back home again, having to be caught up into the beautiful world of nostalgia, even for somebody who is in his early 40's now. God I so miss my childhood 😂.
The sad thing about this is that today's kids will never understand and know the magic of Shining Time Station and the other good shows our generation grew up with.
Such a beautiful song, makes me wistful for those simpler times. Also times when shows actually had ending themes! That's lost now but I really enjoyed a lot of outros.
It wasn't until many years later that I learned it was UP #844 which was filmed for the opening and ending of the show. 844 still rides, and as of 2017 is on tour with passenger excursions in several cities each year.
well if their goal was to write something that would hit ya in the feels later after growing up..... then they nailed it. this is really nice being a kid in the early 90s
Wow, this song was really intense back then and even now. I remember waiting for the theme at the end when the aerial train footage would show and getting excited when it started because I love the song and it was so pretty to listen to. Even as a kid I without being conscious of a lot of things, I still knew and understood that this song was dramatic and passionate and didn’t quite match a silly children’s show.
They should re release the old shinning time station episodes on tv again kids now ahdays would prolly respect the story of the show and plot rather than what we have now
I was born in 1980. I used to watch this program, and I absolutely loved this. The thing that disappoints me is that I researched George Carlin (Mr. Conductor), and he had a dark side to him. I......am at a loss for words. I don't want to mention anything, because there might be parents watching this with their children here. But I am extremely disappointed in George Carlin.
+manhattangrrl The huge cloud of smoke is mostly for show. Producing such a cloud is not very fuel efficient. A working steam locomotive doesn't produce nearly as much smoke. Check out some videos of Union Pacific 844 or 3985 here on TH-cam for some examples.
