    The footwork for longsword has a lot in common with boxing. Hmm, perhaps I will adopt my footwork for boxing into my routines.

      Well, the leading foot differs much ;) In fencing its obligatory that its pointing forward, as other aligment may and did cause horrible injures. Its more like MMA footwork, maybe?

      @@Druid_Ignacy Im probably an outlier then I was taught to box with leading foot pointed forward and only to twist it and my hips during jabs.

      @@giantdad1661 And this twisting leading foot would be super dangerous when with weapon xd

      Boxer here it actually helps the stance switching keeps you moving and teaches you good balance and foundation when moving and punching.

    I watched all of your beginner videos and they are great! I train hema for few months now and I find longsword very intimidating because of its vast amounts of techniques. I feel like I really need to practice solo in my free time and this series is I-D-E-A-L guide for me. Today I have received my first synthetic longsword and sabre and I cant wait to check them out! Thank you very much, can't wait for another video :)

    Great video! It's very clear how the footwork and hand movements work together. I've heard you say we should practice alternating which foot's forward... but what about the hands? Should we always have our dominant hand higher up on the hilt? Cheers!

    Hey mate I love your content, just wanted to ask if I would have to modify any of the guards as I am a short fencer who regularly takes a lot of strikes to the top of the head, I used to do a bit of Meyer and I had less issues as I'd use ox basically as a hanging guard and the hands are quite high, I want to get into fiore but posta like Window guard seems a lot lower, like face height, would to raise it above the head if necessary or do something different all together? All I want to be as true to the system as possible, thank you in advance for your time.

      Of course, the answer is always, adapt everything to yourself. Function first, then you can try to stick to the manual for personal pleasure, but everything always need to work for you first.

    A question suddenly popped up into my mind. At the stance to which leg I put my weight into? Front, back or simply just balance it between both

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just be comfortable. Weight shifts in relation to movement, if you do not have to move just adopt a comfy while ready stance.

    The riposte seems to leave you open to a continuation of the initial attack. What do you do to compensate for this?

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      jerikaye maria magdalena nelson well, everything had to di with the intention. If you do a fast parry and riposte and your opponent have the intention to hit you directly, your parry stop his attack and, in general, he ends his impetus and stops on the parry or he cut on the other side.
      I’ve fenced hundreds of people and I know only one person who, sometimes, keep pushing after the attack is stopped. Which doesn’t really makes sense but indeed, a sword on the face even if it comes from 10cms away it is not a pleasure. But is only a case over more than a hundred, there is always the exception.
      If you think about it, even the riposte who covers the same line of the parry have 3 other quadrants open. The difference in this riposte is that it covers a different quadrant than the parry. Namely high right, which saved me in a lot of sparring from a lot of afterblows. Sparring which you can also find recorded on this channel or in my FB page.
      Bests.

      I think Federico is right, but there's also another important point; you shouldn't execute the riposte blindly as soon as the blades touch. Rather should you train to instantly feel what the attacker does with his sword.
      As Federico said, most fencer will pull back their sword once they notice their initial attack has failed - either to retreat or to make a follow-up attack, which will be both perfect for the riposte shown in the video.
      However, if you feel that the attacker is pushing towards you, Fiore has a lot of techniques to counter that.
