True. If I'm playing over the board against someone who seems very casual, I tend to point out this rule before the game starts.

The interesting reason is why it was added to chess. Back when they added the rule to give pawns the ability to move two squares on their first turn, they immediately adopted the en passant rule in order to ensure pawns can't evade the capture because of the new rule.
Exactly. Which is why it bugs me that people know pawns can move 2 squares on the first move but don't learnt about en passant at the same time.
@@siddhantjhaveri It's because people don't need to know stuff like this to actually play the game. I don't need to know HOW putting gas in my car makes it drive, I just need to know that the gas will make it work.
@@wunknownbeatbox7980 what kind of messed up logic is that? You need to know the rules of the game to play it. Similar to how you must know how to control the steering wheel of the car to drive it. En passant is a rule of the game.
Your reasoning would be apt if it were a concept such as developing pieces and controlling the centre in the opening. You don't need to know these concepts to play the game or even if you know them you don't need to know why they exist and how they work as long as they help you win the game.
@@siddhantjhaveri you misunderstood my comment, I wasnt saying you don't need to know the rule en passant, I was saying you don't need to know why that rule exists or the history of it. You just need to know it exists and how it works in the game. I've been using en passant for years, but didn't learn why it existed until a few months ago.
@@wunknownbeatbox7980 ok then I guess you have misunderstood me as well because I meant to say that both the rules should be taught to new players at the same time. not why the rule was invented but the rule itself should be explained along with the 2 squares rule. Because both rules were created at the same time, one the consequence of the other, yet most casual players have only know of the 2 squares rule but don't know that a move like en pasaant exists.

You should also add that you can't take the pawn if it goes past you. Only works when the pawn moves twice and is right beside you.
Yeah pawn on 6th rank cannot be en passanted. Pawn on 5th rank and pawn on starting position is the only formation where this is valid.
When I first encountered it while playing against computer... I kept telling others that computer cheated 😂

The way I always like to think of the explanation from within the game is that the 2nd pawn is intercepting or countering the first pawn mid-move. Almost like a yu gi oh trap card or flip effect.

Hence why en-passant means “in passing” in French.

I believe this rule was made around the same time the pawn could move two spaces on its first turn. This was to prevent the pawn from just moving past another pawn as seen here. The reason why it can only be made once is because typically in the next move, the pawn would move again anyway.
I lose 99% of my chess games because of this rule it feels relaxjng to do it

Chess is such an elegant, concise game. Rules are so clean and straightforward and easy to learn.
It's En Passant (and to a lesser extent, castling) that make chess feel dirty to me. Rules that are so out of nowhere extra sophisticated.

You did not make clear it ONLY works when the pawn first moves and covers two spaces. If two pawns are already diagonal to one another but neither take, simply moving alongside is not an excuse to use this move.

Not only can you do this, but it is forced, you have to take En Passant whenever it is an option
It is not forced. You may or may not take the pawn should you decide not to.

I have been learning chess for about 3 months, and my Friend has been like playing chess for 5 years, yet.. he doesn’t know the meaning of ‘En Passant’ I once used the En Passant Move on him, and he said “What? Dumbass, you can’t do that!” And I kept saying that I *CAN* do that, but he didn’t believe me. So, I send him this video, bro’s gonna feel so dumb 💀

When i play someone new in a casual environment, the rest of the crowd often assures me that this person (my opponent) is "really good at chess!"
So I ask them two questions.
1) Do you know what castling is?
And if they answer yes
2) Do you know what en passant is?
If they answer yes to the second one then I probably am facing someone who is genuinely good.

No chess move is actually against the law. It may however be against the rules of chess. But be aware you can still be held civilly liable so it's good practice to play chess via a LLC.
