I feel his and Saif Ali Khan's journeys are somewhat running parallel. They both started as cute relatable kids, then went on to play complex characters from Vishal Bharadwaj's adaptations with sometimes not getting enough credit in blockbusters like dil chahta hai and Padmavat. Even their OTT debuts mimic a similar tonality of the projects. Both have openly accepted that they were not comfortable playing commercial over the top leads. Both however, still remain as relevant and keep delivering such memorable characters. Nothing but appreciation and good wishes to both of them.

Unlike Ranbir kapoor, he is truly not of an upper-class, despite his good looks & vicious mindset. I think people can somewhere sense it & does not want a fiend like that to rise up-to the top. I feel the same way about actors like Saif Ali Khan and Emraan Hashmi.
They have kept themselves relevant for so many years and at the same time worked on their craft and proved themselves as good performers but still were not able to develop that required mass box office pull. Surprisingly Shahid, Emraan and Saif did their first film when they were like 23. So maybe the pressure to build a sustainable career at such a young age made them make certain not-so-good film choices and by the time they found their voice as actors, the audience had already categorised them into actors who only does certain kind of roles.

    @LJ-rv9ed 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +88

The answer's in the question- he's been around for 20 years, and can ONLY succeed with a great script. That last, was the unsaid part. He can sell a Haider, an Aditya, a Tommy, a Kabir- but he cannot sell a poor script. Incidentally, Alia Bhat and Ranbir Kapoor have the same problem- give them anything but a great script (in any given genre), they'll fail- because all three of these actors have a certain sensibility, possibly because they grew up around thinking film families. They're all extremely capable actors, but not frivolous ones. Where Ranbir and Alia have a leg up, is the absence of desperation. Alia has always had KJo, Ranbir has had SEVERAL major production houses behind him, just because of his bloodline, long before he established himself as a good actor. While Pankaj Kapur is a fine artist, he's not a commercial one, and that definitely impacted the options Shahid had. I remember what Ayushmann said once, about why he declined several scripts before Vicky Donor- he said that as an outsider, he would only have ONE first chance- if that failed, he was toast. Shahid's privilege is somewhere between that of Ayushmann and Ranbir- he got multiple chances, but he did not get multiple GOOD ones. Ayushmann would not have gotten multiple chances if he hadn't delivered so many good, successful movies in the beginning; and Ranbir will keep getting decent scripts even if he chooses to do multiple poor ones, or has multiple failures at the box office. It's all about where you stand on the privilege scale. As for being a romantic lead, the typical Bollywood kind, that SRK can still play when he's almost 60- like with terrible scripts, Shahid's sensibility won't let him do certain things, and your typical Bollywood romance might be one of those things.

I agree with your analysis completely, and I wish he would embrace that frivolity because that would give him a very good chance to pursue an Aamir Khan-esque route. Unfortunately, India needs escapist cinema, but just because a film tells a tall tale, doesn't mean it can't be meaningful. '3 idiots' is the one Indian movie that has impacted our psyche the most. I think Shahid Kapoor might still be struggling with enjoying acting and cinema, and that translates onto the screen. This scramble between different choices and styles has left the audiences confused about whom Shahid Kapoor is. They say that for an average viewer what makes a story great is familiarity.

Shahid Kapoor's versatile acting journey indeed spans a spectrum of characters, showcasing his range from endearing romantic roles to intense, complex portrayals. The charm he brought to characters in films like Jab We Met and Vivah highlighted his ability to connect with audiences emotionally. On the other hand, his ventures into darker territories with roles in Kaminey and Haider demonstrated his prowess in tackling nuanced and challenging characters. The chaotic energy he infused into the character of Tommy Singh in Udta Punjab revealed yet another facet of his acting prowess.
While Kabir Singh garnered both praise and controversy, Shahid Kapoor's commitment to the role showcased his dedication to exploring unconventional characters. It's true that his role in Padmaavat might have been somewhat overshadowed by the larger-than-life performance of Ranveer Singh, but Kapoor's portrayal of Rawal Ratan Singh was nuanced and commendable in its own right.
As witnessed in Jersey, where the film's reception may have varied, it's clear that Shahid Kapoor is not afraid to take risks and delve into diverse roles. With a career marked by evolution and experimentation, one can only anticipate that he will continue to surprise and captivate audiences with his future projects, steering away from the stereotypical angry young man archetype and embracing the vast canvas of cinematic possibilities.

yes he proved himself as a versatile actor but the thing is stardom comes when the audience connects with you in certain way .Their expectation is met when they go and watch your movie . The expectation that is created by the actor though his style ,relativity and a x factor which only that actor possess . like srk was known for his romantic factor , sunny deol for his macho factor these actor managed to put a new dimension into their x factor which made them connect with the audience in a certain way and that is how they found stardom . Shahid for a long time never had that x factor yeah he is good dancer but hrithik was better yeah he is a versatile actor but there are other good versatile actor too he finally found his x factor in kabir singh , nobody plays a complicated a*s hole like him . he did that in farzi too and farzi is the biggest ott hit of the year .There is no harm in getting typecast just keep upgrading what you can do best if its working . if he brings another solid complicated a*s hole character arc in his filmography than he will be a bonafied star people will know what to expect from him. Its very hard to create the x factor actually the hardest for the actor . i say if you have it use it well

@@iftyhuq4321 Certainly, you've raised a valid perspective regarding the elusive x factor. Cultivating an authentic x factor is a challenging task, and attempting to mimic it could indeed result in a decline. I acknowledge and value your point as it holds significant importance for artists. However, I express a hope that there will be discernible nuances in Shahid Kapoor's portrayal of complex characters. While we've observed variations in Kabir Singh, Bloody Daddy, and Farzi, my concern is to avoid a portrayal that leans towards a stereotypical angry and complicated persona. Additionally, I'm keen for him to revisit his dance skills, as I thoroughly enjoy the way he moves and grooves.

So glad you mentioned Don. When it was announced that SRK will no longer continue with the franchise and the role will be re-cast, I just knew the casting choice would be as uncreative and predictable as casting Ranveer or Ranbir, and I was so right. If they cast Shahid, it would be welcomed more due to being an unpredictable choice given how much he is overlooked by well-known directors and production houses for big movies often, there would be more intrigue and excitement from audience to see Shahid in the role of Don as the audience does recognise Shahid as a strong and intense actor in complex roles, but also because the audience to a certain point would be feeling fatigued seeing the same actors cast in every big movie so would find it refreshing to see a shake-up in the line of actors casted in big projects.

Shahid made his debut in one of the worst times ever. Pre-2007, no big studios (Dharma, YRF, Excel) were launching newcomers. Even Kaho Na Pyaar Hai had limited buzz pre-release since it was sandwiched between Aamir/SRK films. Post 2007, everything changed. Saawariya and SOTY were MASSIVELY hyped films that eventually spearheaded the "big newcomer launch." The opportunities that Ranbir, Ranveer, and Varun got with esteemed filmmakers always eluded Shahid. Ranveer was backed by YRF, Varun was backed by Dharma, and Ranbir got the best of both worlds. Meanwhile, Shahid got forgettable flops like Dil Bole Hadippa and Shandaar from YRF and Dharma, despite being capable of so much more as an actor. I think Shahid's career is a case study of "it's not how talented you are, it's who backs you."

He's still underrated because of his film choices . If we actually see the movies that he rejected which went to on to become big hits we would know why he's still not much talked about Rockstar, Ranjhana , Bang Bang ( don't know how true it's though) all could have added so much to his career but somehow he ended up doing a Phata Poster and Batti Gul just after delivering Kaminey or Haider . Somehow he just couldn't become the fan favourite when Ranbir Kapoor was on a rise during similar time. He made a huge comeback with Kabir Singh and became a household name again but then Jersey came ( which was again getting delayed continuously) his acting was brilliant again but the movie went completely unnoticed due to the wrong date they chose to release it at. Now his next with Kriti can become a hit if it's done well as it will release during Valentine's Week and has that romantic genre . But his main comeback might just again come with the Action Comedy that he's doing .
Even after having the talent he used it at all the wrong places unlike Ranbir who's movies even if they were flop weren't such bad choices after all.
Hope he has realised it now and is actually choosing good scripts instead of random works. Deva also looks like can be a good thriller because the director is pretty strong.

Firstly, love your videos Jammy, I have been a fan since the start of this channel. You always bring up topics that are incredibly relevant and have a certain nuance to them. With regards to Shahid, I think the biggest mistake that he or perhaps even Ranveer or Varun have made is that they haven't cultivated their aura. I believe stardom is more aura than anything else. For e.g. Manoj Bajpayee is a stellar actor but the star aura has never been there. I was at Burj Khalifa recently when SRK came for Jawan promotions. The hosts kept on naming people that we have Bhushan Kumar here, we have Atlee, we have Vijay Setupathy but the crowd was numb with little to no applause, but when they said SRK is here, the crowd went wild. The noise was deafening. Shahid has done some amazing roles but he will always be a hero but never a star. Also, Jammy, I am waiting for a matlab kuch bhe episode :P. Love from Karachi, Pakistan

For me, Shahid Kapoor is the number 1 star-actor from the newer generation followed by Ranbir Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. What he did in Haider is miles ahead of anything anyone else from the newer generation has done, and will be appreciated to its deserved level perhaps 20/30 years later. Also, some of his films did not deserve to fail namely Fida, Dil Maange More, Teri Meri Kahaani, Jersey and Batti Gul Meter Chalu.

I think the reason behind like you said, why is he not the first choice or even choice for playing the franchise lead characters or the lead under the banner of great bollywood brands could be because he doesn't go to Bollywood parties and socialize with the 'Insiders' and that's how he is and its okay to be like that. I think he is one of the most disciplined, talented and consistent personalities in the industry. It was his talent and perseverance that has actually got him this far. So, the time is changing, it's not the age of stardom anymore. lots of talents are finally getting chances and that push. and now, I feel, some countable elites in the industry cannot control or influence the fate of talents like him and he is getting even better like a fine wine. and one suggestion to you, it is good that you pointed out probably some of the unsaid things in the industry, but it would be nice, if you would not have mentioned 'negative verbs' in the title like 'unlucky' or 'never became a star', in the title. This might work reverse way. and rather say something like 'deserves better treatment' or 'who the bollywood need to focus on' or something like that you know. Just a suggestion, from a great fan of Shaheed

Fab video! As a big Shahid fan for 20 years- this one hit hard.
I want to point you to a fab point.
Every big director has made a flop film with Shahid after immediately making a big hit film with someone else.
Be it Rajkumar Santoshi with PPNH after APKGH
    Or
Be it Vikas Behl making Shaandaar after Queen
    Or
Shree Narayan Singh making Batti Gul after Toilet
    And the list goes on..
Despite this.. his career choices seem to have been very much director driven. He’s worked every good name there is.
All he needs is a Zoya or Raju Hirani or KJo to consider him.
Another problem: every time he worked with his dad has proved unsuccessful for him despite a fab product like Jersey or a slow film like Mausam or the grande train wreck of Shaandaar which looks fabbb!

Agree with the last lines by you how he's never the choice for all this projects even after so many good works and consistently proving himself. Even after consistent set of Box office failures Tiger is still bagging a place in Cop universe when nobody even might be thinking about him for any such role. Proved in Bloody daddy too that he can do action well why isn't he even thought about a role in Don even if as a Villian.

Shahid as Don would have been such an unexpected choice, and I can see that even SRK fans may have approved of Shahid as a successor to the Don series because Ranveer or Ranbir or such monotonous and predictable choices by producers.

@@MultiBigbird01 Even though I'm not a hater of Ranveer but I only wish that his Don fails badly the announcement itself recieved alot of hate. I would have even approved Hrithik in Don but Ranveer just doesn't looks like he would fit that role. Shahid could have nailed it instead and even would have got a huge boost in his career. Don't think Don would become a hit now with Ranveer in it.

Shahid Kapoor is a great underrated versatile actor and dancer. His romance in Ishq Vishk, Jab We Met, Vivah, his intensity in Kaminey, Haider, Udta Punjab, Kabir Singh, his comedy in Chup Chup Ke, Phata Poster Nikla Hero. Even many of his flop films are SECRET UNDERRATED MASTERPIECES. For me his best performances will be always Haider and our all time and GOAT KABIR SINGH. He definitely deserved Best Actor Award in Filmfare 2020 which went to Ranveer Singh who was great in Gully Boy but that film is actually Bollywood's version of Eminem's 8 Mile with many noted similarities. I'll say that it's almost a REMAKE. LOL. But jokes apart, he's not a SUPERSTAR because his films with biggest production houses in Bollywood failed miserably Dil Bole Hadippa and Badmaash Company(I liked that movie and it's songs BTW) from YRF and the God awful Shaandar from Dharma Productions really hampered his stardom.

His script selection method is the biggest reason he is not a star till now. Looks, skills, range, screen presence, this guy has everything. But somewhere, even we didn't appreciate him. His performances from Kaminey, and Haider didn't give him a commercial blockbuster. Even Jersey was good but flopped at the box office.
