The statue is her mother, the hand that holds and protects her, who committed suicide due to depression... and jumped to her death. Everyone sees the statue as you can't miss it. But is subtle without you realizing the context. Because the irony of it is that is only when she got trapped in the black depression (as sickness and not a normal stage of grief) is when she can FINALLY accepted why her mom left her. Everyone with empathy says that they understand people who kill themselves are desperate but when it happens near you, you feel almost hate to the "selfishness" of the people who didn't thought about the people they left behind, instead of keep fighting. Again, this messages are subtle, so you can apply the story to yourself and interiorize the experience, just like the memory with her mom happy is very important and cathartic for her but not for you: you need to work and search for it on purpose as you as the player don't need it. I was blown away when playing that game. I was alone, just immersing myself in it and when i reached this ending... It blew me away so hard, music, art, composition, scenes, perfection and so, so emotional.
aw man what a beautiful journey... i won't be able to play it :( mentally y'know lol but for me the part that hit hardest is after all that work to bring the memory of her lost one back together she becomes completely consumed by the darkness again... the way she gets up and immediately starts singing (fighting) was so beautiful it really shows the progress one has made in winning their own battles. absolutely stunning great job devs!

I played it recently, and it touched my heart because I've been struggling with depression for 20 years. I've been following you and Gus for many years, and it comforts me to come back here from time to time and see that everything is still great, that you both continue doing what you love, and that you still enjoy it like the first day. This always makes me cry. My feel about this game is: The statue its her, and she gave herself another oportunitty to live, a second chanse to feel once more, the darkness cant touch her. She won her second chanse.. and a New path its open...maybe I wrong.. but this game helps me wiht my depression. Thank you Anna for play this beautiful game!!

The second interpretation is not possible in my opinion since you see the tomb of the mother in the final scene.
I suffer greatly with depression. I found this game incredibly cathartic.
