  • UPDATE: BUY THE NEW GRACE O'MALLEY NOVEL!
    amzn.to/3k2WmrS
If Irish history, Grace O'Malley, or historical novels are your thing, my dad's new book might well be for you. Think Irish Patrick O'Brien. This is the first in what will be an ongoing series : )
    ---
Another song about the struggle to expel the English from Ireland, set in Tudor times and featuring Grace O'Malley, Grainne Maol, clan chieftain, sea captain and sometime pirate who is the subject of the writer's hopes to see her lead Irishmen to drive out the foreigner.
Diarmuid Clohessy - Guitar & Vocals
Terry Thompson - Ships Harpsicord & Vocals
English Translation of Padraig Pearse Version:
    Oh-ro You are welcome home,
    Oh-ro You are welcome home,
    Oh-ro You are welcome home,
    Now that summer’s coming!
    Chorus
Welcome lady who faced such troubles
Your capture brought us to our ruin
With our fine land usurped by thieves
And you sold to the foreigners!
    Chorus
Gráinne O’Malley comes over the sea,
With armed warriors as her guard
They’re Irishmen - not French nor Spanish
And they will rout the foreigners!
    Chorus
May it please dear God that we might see,
Even if we only live for week after,
Gráinne Mhaol and a thousand warriors -
    Routing all the foreigners!
    Chorus

I am not Irish, but I lived in Dublin for 2 and a half years and there is not a single day that I don't miss it to the point of crying, mostly because of your amazing sense of music, obviously based on centuries of heartbreak, pride and sadness. Éirinn go Brách

Wow, I reckon you better get back there one of these days. I've seriously considered throwing in my lot here and moving to Ireland. I guess you'd recommend it?!
Like you, I'm not Irish, but for years I've had a yearning to be there. Perhaps it's because, up until fairly recently, the Irish still lived quite a traditional way of life. I shoulda been born hundreds of years ago.

@@Lee-nh5bb It doesn't really have to do with "traditional ways of living" for me. It's mostly about the atmosphere, the cities (Dublin in my case)... I don't know, I guess is simply because I was happy there. I'd recommend you to go there for a while and see yourself

I’ve been to Ireland many times as my mom is from the North, and raised quite Republican! So she indoctrinated me too! Anyway I learned a lot of songs and fell in love with 1990s Dublin. I’m a part o Dublin in The Rare Oul’ Times. I can’t bear to look at the new aspects of Dublin. I’ve adapted the verse that goes “The pillar and the Met have gone”… “The Floozie long since dried up, and that feckin’ modern LUAS, is a bloody eyesore!” !!
When I am crossing Abbey street on O’Connell street, I cover or close my eyes cause it’s not part of my beloved oul’ Dublin. Bah!

This song was written by Pádraig Anraí Mac Piaras, Patrick Pearse, most likely around the 1910s. It is a re-write of an old 18th Century Jacobite song. (Jacobite meaning supporter of hopeful King James, and his son Séarlas Óg, Prince Charlie - Gaels in Ireland and Scotland supported his campaign for the throne). Pearse's version features Gráinne Mhaol (a power on the west coast in the late 16th century.) Pearse showed his knowledge of the Jacobite version in the way he adapted it to the independence cause. He emphasised the Irishness of the fighters and the glory of the Gael by substituting native Grace for the foreign Prince Charlie, and changing Béidh siad leis-sean Franncaigh is Spáinnigh ('They’ll be with him, French and Spanish') to Gaeil féin 's ní Francaigh ná Spáinnigh ('Gaels they, and neither French nor Spaniard').

Tis a great song. This, however, is not the original version of this song. This version was written around 1916.
From the original, Gráinne Mháoil replaced Séarlas óg (Refering to Bonnie Prince Charlie) and the "Fracaigh ná Spáinnigh" verse was changed from "Tá Séarlas Óg ag triall thar sáile. Béidh siad leisean, Franncaigh is Spáinnigh. Óglaigh armtha leis mar gharda. ‘S bainfidh siad rinnce as éiricigh!"
The original version was from around the early to mid 18th century. Irish supported the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland believing installing Prince Charles Stewart (a Catholic) on the throne would benefit them as well and he would help drive out the English Protestants. The original song was meant as a Welcoming of Bonnie Charlie to Ireland.
The main chorus, however is much older and was a chanting song used in the old tradition of "Wife Taking" where upon marriage a wife wouldn't move into he new husbands' home until a month later with much ceremony including the singing/chanting of "Óró, 'sé do bheatha 'bhaile" (Cheers! Welcome Home!")

Some of my ancestors on the Irish side were slave owners in confedrate times. No matter how you slice it it's hard not to feel a bit ashamed about something like that. Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
