Some of it comes down to timing. One good way to to time the sweep off a step in. Such as kicking out the front leg when they step in to Jab. Another is doubling up the sweep, for instance after using the lead leg sweep you shift to the rear to take the leg completely out from under them. It's mostly going to come down to timing if you want them to hit the mat. Otherwise it's about breaking the balance and using the sweep to see up additional strikes.
