I believe this is the live performance from Paris from the early 1990's. Carol sang in three productions of Norma (i.e., Paris, Houston, and San Francisco) in the 1990's. If you look around, you may be able to find unofficial recordings of these performances. Carol was a wonderful Norma, much underappreciated in this role (and other roles) because she was such a supreme Mozart singer.
@KatherineXIX yes, i´m completely aware of that, as a matter of fat, i know that this is one of the lyric roles for excellence, however, seeing the repertoire og mrs vaness, her role are more dramatic: tosca, leonora, etc, and the roles that you say i think she sings them in a really dramatic tone, just compare them with renee fleming, which is no doubt a lyric soprano... and well, i guess that it doesn´t matter what kind of soprano she is, she is a force of nature, and a gist to music

Hey Pete! I actually knew Carol in college, and got to sing with her! A phenplomenal talent (her; not me)! None of us were surprised when she made it big in opera! (Bev Sills was a personally mentored Carol in the beginning of her career!)
It's all relative. In Mozart, she sang many of the Mozart "dramatic" roles, but they don't require the same voice as Verdi or Puccini. I think lirico spinto is as close as you can get.

Vaness had a lovely instrument, particularly in Mozart. This role was not for her and I can hear her nerves throughout, not to mentioned the hoarse, tight high notes.. Understandable. I recall when she cancelled her debut in the role two weeks before opening night at Seattle Opera. The company rightfully panicked and actually tried to lure Dame Joan Sutherland out of retirement, as if Dame Joan would ever cover for Vaness. The cancellation lead to the American debut of Jane Eaglen.
I disagree totally. I think she did amazingly well. If only any of the Normas around today sounded anywhere near as good as this. I dont know what the rest of the performance was like, but it is that very Mozart ability to sing with a clear line, agility and perfect mezza voce evenly throughout the whole voice makes her for me an ideal candidate for this role. I dont hear any hoarseness anywhere!

I heard Carol sing a superb Norma in San Francisco in the late 90s. With Anna Caterina Antonacci and Michael Sylvester.

I am afraid you are wrong. This is not a lyric role. It is an Italian dramatic coloratura role. You need a big instrument for this.

Carol Vaness has a sublime voice, and I could listen to her sing all day, and she is wonderful in Casta Diva, but this tempo is too fast.
do you think vaness is a lyric soprano? i´ve always thought of her as a dramatic one
