I agree that the Bulova Lunar Pilot is one of the best chronographs you can get and I really like mine. For a field watch below $250, I would suggest the Citizen Promaster Land BJ7086-06E . While it does not have a traditional field watch appearance, it is a great watch for outdoor activities. 200m WR, GMT hand, internal compass bezel, screw-down crown, and great lume.

I don't own one, YET, but I am absolutely blown away by the Tissot V8. I can hardly believe that you can purchase a fully mechanical chronograph watch, with an ETA movement, for such a reasonable price.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just to add that the ST19 which is inside the 1963 "reissue" (the various versions) is actually a column wheel chronograph movement too - so not just any mechanical chrono - but a column wheel mechanical chrono too. Most Swiss chronograph movements in the affordables arena usually use the cam actuated method (like the Valjoux 7750 or the 1861 found in the Speedy) - not to say that cams are bad (or that those two movements aren't reliable and great) - but to get to Swiss column wheel chronograph movements you usually have to pay quite a bit more than their cam variants.

Hi! Excellent professional review. I use a chronograph function a lot - short poses in a life class, getting from A to B, free X hour parking etc. This hand in a chrono dial is vitally important. However only three chronos in this review have distinctly different chrono hands from hands in other two small dials. When guarantee runs out of my newly bought CA0715-03E I shall be replacing the small hand in the chrono dial with something special.Thank you for the review.

Dan Henry makes some nice chronographs as you've stated and if you want to go really inexpensive two that have gotten many excellent value for money reviews (mecha-quartz, solid links, 316L stainless, screw links or leather style strap, sapphire crystal) on youtube are the Pagani Design Daytona homage (Parnis also makes one but the Pagani seems to get reviewed a little bit better) and the Pagani 2720k. Both are Chinese but under $100.

There's plenty of watch options out there for those of us with normal eyesight but I've yet to come across good reviews specific for those who have a passion for horology/collecting whose vision may be not as it were some years ago such as father's, uncle's, friends, etc. who have a passion for watches but struggle to wear just the typical recommended value pieces.

Dave I Love Chronographs. Have Citizens, Casios, Hamilton, Longines, Bulovas, and Seikos. I have the Bulova Lunar Pilot 262 kHz - Love it. I also have the Bulova Curve Rose Gold Curve with the same movement! They are big but fit my small wrist comfortably! Dave Welcome to the wonderful world of Watch Collecting! There are several Chrono I plan to add to my collection. There are many accurate Mechanicals but Quartz seem to be most accurate. I love and appreciate Omega, Breitling, and Rolex. I reviewed less than 500 video before this. I had an awesome LeCoultre that got damaged in the military when our helicopter went down. I also love my Citizens Blue Angels in Titanium. There are some wonderful Chronographs but they are expensive! Enjoy your Journey in Watch Collecting! Other than the Bulova, Ive been purchasing Eco Drives and Solar Models. Citizens and Seikos. There are many beautiful timepieces available again enjoy!!

For field watches, you have to cover Hamilton, which are as iconic as they come, and not all that pricey. If you're looking at list price, you can get a Khaki Field Mechanical for just under $500, and is absolutely an icon. The automatic ones list for more, but you can readily get some of them for less. I got a Khaki King, which lists for $575, for less tan $400. I love the khaki king.

Orient Defender 2 for a feildwatch. Dosen't get the love it deserves over the older model which is so much more less expensive. Its next on my list and the ability to hack, the updated movement and the accent colors on the some of hands, for me, make it worth the money over the previous version. Also I think how they moved the secondary dials around make it a much more readable watch face but thats subjective and probably just my personal taste.😅
Will it be better than my Fieldwalker? I don't know but I can't wait to get the cream or gray faced version to find out!

The Hemel is a very well made watch. I owned the same model you featured but sold it to buy something else. Didn't like not having a running second hand and also could do without the 24 hour subdial which I believe is a waste on a chronograph. Also had the Bulova. Sold it.....too big. Hi Dave. Just re-watching some of your older videos, so I'm not even sure if you'll pick up on this comment (might have to post something on a newer video) but as it's in relation to a super affordable chronograph I thought it would be relevant here. I recently picked up an Invicta model 35113, only available on the EU store and limited to 300. It's actually an updated reissue of one of their watches from the 60s, so vintage inspired, but with a mechaquartz movement, and I paid around £85 (€101) which is great value. Lovely silver sunburst dial, polished case, interestingly no ticking second hand, which is great for the bedside table. I'd encourage anyone looking for a classic chrono to check it out.

Pretty much any Dan Henry fits the bill here. I had the Brew watch and swore I would never sell it. One of my favorite watches ever. I love everything Brew does. The watch (copper dial) had one major flaw. The hands disappeared into the dial making it very hard to tell the darn time. That’s a major flaw. The hands are too thin, the copper dial shines a lot masking the already shiny and very thin hands, and the hands are the same color as the silver sub dials. The result is one of the coolest looking watches ever being hard to read in all but the perfect light.

The Lunar Pilot’s sub-second sub-dial measures 1/20 second, not 1/10 second. Some of my quartz chronographs have 1/10 second sub-dials, but my newer ones are usually 1/20 second. 1/20 second (.05 second) is the realistic limit of precision for a human being pressing a pusher. Higher resolutions like 1/100 second or 1/1000 second (like on my Bulova Precisionist chronographs) is mostly a gimmick.

With the functions it offers (thermometer, barometer, compass) the Casio Protrek (actually a number of the casios) might be considered a field watch although it doesn't have the classic field watch look, automatic movement etc.

It was on the Pilots watch list from the month before this. I try to avoid putting the same watch on multiple lists.
