This past draft was at The Vegas Sphere. Knights players were doing autograph sessions. Logan Thompson learned that he had been traded to The Capitals just before his autograph session. Thompson did it and that was his last act as a Vegas Golden Knight.
I figured that if Thompson did well, he would get the #1 GK slot with The Capitals.

I think goalie coaches are a huge part of a team's success. The same teams keep getting new goalies who have had success elsewhere and they just start playing terribly. Then the goalies go elsewhere and have success again. Ottawa, Pittsburgh, and Edmonton come to mind. You can argue that it's the structure in front of the goalies but it just seems to keep happening even when the players on the team change.

Considering goalies having played at least 10 games this season, of the top 10 in sv%, there are no 1st round picks, and as many undrafted goalies as 2nd round picks. One of those 2nd rounders, in 5 seasons, has posted a .933, .892, .931, .899, and is sitting at .923 so far this season. It's fairly well established that goalies are unpredictable and weird, and it's quite common for success in lower leagues to never translate to the NHL, and guys who fly under the radar often end up doing well when they get the chance. Heck, there are only two active goalies with two Vezina trophies, and one of them was undrafted (the other was picked in the 5th round, for what it's worth).

I like GSAx but I prefer GSAx per 60, or at least mentioning it. If you have two players who are +3 GSAx but one played 3 games and the other has played 30 games, the former is averaging +1 GSAx per 60 while the latter is only averaging 0.1. Of course 3 games tells you less because it's a small sample size, but I do like getting a larger amount of information.

I was actually just chatting about this the other day with my dad, and made the same exact points about GAA and wins (and, to a somewhat lesser extent save percentage) being not so great for comparing goalies. With goalies and defense, in a lot of ways, I still feel the eyeball test is more helpful than actual stats, because stats tend to treat all shots the same, and don't account for difficulty of the save (I know some advance stats do, but those also require subjective value judgments, and they sort of become an attempt to quantify the eyeball test at that point), how their defense is playing in front of them, or the fact that a goalie who stops 9/10 has a better save percentage than a goalie who stops 26/30, but that latter goalie was getting peppered and fatigue becomes a lot more of a factor.

  • @Bonaboms

    Awesome breakdown!
Ppl get their nickers in a twist over adv. stats, and while not perfect, they easily beat any other statistic (especially the dreaded eye test ughh)

What is the benchmark for comparison, such that a goalie would be at +-0.00 goals expected? A comparison against historical average save percentage based on the different types of shot quality (high-danger, 5-alarm, etc)? Based on this list, most goalies are above 0.00, some of which are way above. On average, the league's goalies are well above that neutral 0.00 mark, which means goalies are playing better than this expected benchmark.
Having said that, this metric offers a good comparison for goalies this season in a relative sense! Just curious if someone knows that answer.

Without a cross-reference as to how many shots have been faced by a given goaltender, these stats have limited function. For instance, the fact that Montembeault is even above water in this stat is miraculous. He gets shot to pieces every single game, much like Blackwood and Dostal. There is also the exposure question. Andersen at 6.81 versus Kochetkov at 3.62? How many games has Andersen played? 6? Kochetkov has carried the Canes this year, but the offense needs to be factored in. Earlier I quoted the stat that measures how much time a team spends in their offensive zone while a given defenseman was in the game. The CAR defensemen were ALL at 60% or above. That affects the goalie big time...Speaking of CAR, yes, they need another 1B goaltender...If ANA falls off the horse, Gibson moves. I think Soderblum moves out of CHI. With JimMont in STL now, Binnington's days there may be numbered. If SJS moves anybody it'll be Vanacek, but I still see SJS as a late blooming contender this year. Go ahead and laugh. The Sharks are getting it figured out. And I think Connor Ingram seriously needs out of Salt Lake. He's way better than that. He's just had a loser team around him for so long. Gibson to COL? I don't think so. Nobody is good enough for the Avs. You could dig up Gordie Howe, resurrect him with bionic limbs, and Avs fans would still be pissed. (Parents, don't let your kids drink Coors.) CAR? Who wants to play there? Not saying it's bad, but there are an astonishing number of NHL contracts featuring NTCs with Raleigh on it...All of the contenders seem to be set with the exceptions of VAN, LAK, CAR, and OTT. OTT just needs a better backline...But the NHL never does anything that I expect, so - there's that...

@@Nathanielhiggerson66They don't pass the eye test. I've watched all 22 games. And they have lapses at the worst possible time. They end up screening their own goalie or just leaving guys in front of the net for tip ins. They don't clear rebounds. The games where Georgie or Juice were good? Great defense.

So... there is two contenders (EDM, COL) and at least one pretender (LAK) in need of an upgrade in net. On the other side there is Gibson (who has cap space to take him on?), Blackwood, Mrazek and as a 1B option Soderbloom. Interesting situation.

I wouldn't mind seeing Husso go to a team that needs a back-up or is willing to gamble on him. He's been injured practically is whole time in Detroit and when he was "healthy" the team in front of him wasn't making him look great.
Honestly don't know where he's at skill wise if he can stay healthy and shake off the rust, but he seems like a prime reclamation project for a team willing to take a gamble.

Watching Bobrosky over the years, consistency is odd. He will have a good year followed by a bad year. The year between his Vezina trophies was a down year. I've also seen him switch everything up mid-season or right at the playoffs. As much as I love Bob, was kind of hoping they would move him over the summer, while he had really high trade value. The Panthers currently have 14.5 million tied up in cap space for two goaltenders. They could have kept Stolarz and still have Knight for the future and Driedger for insurance. Hindsight seems 20/20, but I was saying this since the end of last season.
