Great vid John, but I completely disagree. Sure, I'm bias being an avid CD collector however, vinyl sales have dropped significantly between 25-30% mainly due to rising prices of vinyl. Many current vinyl collectors, not all of course are now collecting CD's being that they are more affordable. On the flipside, CD sales have risen double digits. Record stores are receiving a huge amount of used late title vinyl from younger vinyl collectors that can't keep up with the rising prices. Plus, my VW Golf has a cd player pin the glovebox and a Fender stereo…an important feature of the car I chose.
It's bound to happen. Nothing lasts forever. There are no secondhand stores near where I live, so I tend to go on eBay and buy from reputable resellers with a 100% money-back guarantee. The CDs then get ripped to LAME MP3 in VBR at -V2 (indistinguishable from CD to 99% of listeners in double blind listening tests) and stored away carefully in a CD-friendly environment. All of the CDs I bought back in 1985 still play back flawlessly and rip error-free, so I don't think disc rot is a major problem if you store your CDs correctly.
My car is 7 years old and doesn't have a CD player. Modern desktop PC cases don't have places to mount CD/DVD/BluRay drives, so it's not just laptops that don't include them.
I have to admit.. don't really buy CDs anymore and I don't stream. Radio is dead since we only have DAB+. Typically buying hi-res music in places like 7digital, HDtracks and bandcamp, right into my archive and backup HDD. A memory stick in the car does the trick. If I didn't have access to hi-res FLAC I would probably go back to vinyl.
I buy both vinyl and cds, but I mainly buy CDs . First I can buy 2 cds for the price of one LP. Also I carry a cd player with me always and play them. You cannot do that with vinyl. It is true less stores carry them but here in New York I have no problems finding them.
10 years ago I sent a CD to my cousin in New York and his son, aged 12, said "What's a CD?" He'd never seen one before. I buy a lot of CDs, and occasionally, records.
I went from a 2013 to a 2023 car last year, and of course no CD player in the new car. I have a Tidal account for streaming that I almost never use at home, where I listen to my vinyl or my CDs. The streaming is for in the car/at work and for sampling albums that others say I should check out. I buy very few new CDs these days but will look through used CDs in flea markets and have found some $1 bargains amid the deluge of crap.
I still have a CD player in my car. I have no idea what I will do when we get a new car. I buy them regularly especially the bands I love (ACDC, Maiden, etc.). I love making mixes too. I get a lot of CDs from the library and from record stores and occasionally online. I also download some stuff from iTunes. From all of that I usually create mixes of my favorite songs from my most recent acquisitions. I also make various mixes for different styles of music or make my own greatest hits packages that focus on my favorites rather than the traditional hits. I am a dinosaur, but I am not going down without a fight. p.s. I refuse to pay for streaming. My collection is too big to pay for duplication. I hope I can keep it going for the next 20 years or so.
I still buy some CDs and still really like the format...especially in the car. When I bought a new car in 2021, I looked specifically for used cars with CD players. This will likely be my last car with a CD player unless I have enough money to have some kind of custom car stereo installed.
Great video John! I believe it depends on the area where you reside. I still buy a lot of CDs and haven't bought a vinyl record for myself in 5 years. I am fortunate to have an independent record store nearby. They still have and sell more CDs than vinyl and also sell out of more new releases on CD than vinyl. However, I have gone to many music stores outside of the area and often they will onIy sell vinyl or have few CDs. I go to a lot of concerts and yes, it seems you see more t-shirts and koozies these days. For up and coming artists, you will see a fairly equal amount of vinyl and CDs and it seems with more established ones, you may see just the latest album. As for CDs players in vehicles, I have a new vehicle on order and I was given a choice of options. The salesman said, "We can put in anything you want". I said, "Can you put in a CD player?" Nope, they couldn't accomodate me. I couldn't get anything I wanted! Cheers!
I have to disagree with you on this Your 5 signs don’t really mean the end of CDS Vinyl is popular but people are still buying CDS I buy both as CDS are great for putting on for longer periods as background music CDs are also cheaper to buy than vinyl and they don’t sound bad They ain’t going anywhere for awhile
If you're happy being held captive by large music streaming companies, then the absence of physical media won't bother you in the slightest. On the other hand, those of us who actually sit and listen to music reproduction will not in the slightest be happy if music in the physical form vanishes.
I like CD too but honestly with the economy it’s just so much cheaper to have a Bluetooth speaker and you sync it to your iPhone and TH-cam Music has almost everything. So that’s my story.
I love CDs and get them from anywhere I can find the ones I want. Unfortunately, they are slowly being phased out people have been telling me they were on their way out 25 years ago I believed them but loved them anyway. One sign is CD players are not in the stores anymore they don't put them in cars anymore. Stores for CDs are not in every mall or shopping section of cities anymore Amazon still caries them but the prices are going up and selection is going down I am still looking for them they are getting hard to find ones I want partly because my collection size is getting ridiculous but that is another story.
I bought a new car a few years ago and it didn't have a CD player and I bought a new computer a few years ago with a CD drive, luckily I happened to have an external one because I like to burn CDs to my computer.
The demand for vinyl is killing it The pvc used for vinyl manufacturing is running out. I buy lots of cheap cds at record fairs 2 pounds each. Dealers are overpricing vinyl that you can get cheaper on cd. Cds sound better on a good system HI FI.
Super weak arguments. Most stores including wal mart got rid of ALL media not just cds. Most don't have dvds or vinyl either. Only one local store has a media department. It stocks DVDs, vinyl and loads of CDs. $40 for vinyl $10 for same album on CD. I still sell cds on ebay. This video is totaly out of touch with reality. I don't have time for videos this pointless. Have just unsubed.
I will still buy cds 💿 I buy them every two Fridays I still listen to them in my car 🚗. I have vinyl and cassettes to and I still buy all three walmart's are starting to carry alot of cds 💿. I still have a 5 disc changer. My local record carrys cds 💿 and I have the owner from my local record store order me the newest cds 💿 my wife has a cassette and a cd 💿 player in her car 🚗
CDs forever. My collection consists of right about 3,000 currently. Mostly Metal, and I add more every month. There are many affordable and easy options to have players wherever you want them.
The reason why there are no CD players in cars anymore because the cars are Bluetooth. Why don’t you ask how many people out there not just in the bottom will community but anyone that listens to music whether they have record players the number is a very, very low.
Those who care about physical music formats and quality sound will never rely on Wi-Fi and subscriptions. The car dealer obviously finds the lack of a cd player amusing because, I suspect, he obviously doesn't listen closely to music.
The only significant advantage to CDs is that are significantly cheaper. Of course this IS a significant advantage😅. However…the charm of vinyl cannot be matched, and its worth spending the extra
My home and car have CD players. I buy 50% from Bandcamp, 25% Am, 25% local stores. Don't fall for the groupthink propaganda. CDs a pricey enough at $18-$23 but 30-35 bucks for vinyl, get outta here! I got a hard rock, classic metal and stoner/doom college radio show in Cleveland OH that is 100% CDs! Doom On!
CDs , Cassettes, and even 8 Tracks are superior to vinyl. Vynil warps, it skips unless you're lying in bed motionless, they break easily, the covers get dog eared , the artwork cracks, and peals away.
The term Heavy Metal as a catch all phrase to describe all noisy music is wearing thin . It's time someone coins a phrase to describe all these Monster at the mic bands. It's also time someone invents a physical media format that is the next step beyond CDs. If they can create i phones, someone can invent the superior Album format. Catch all IPODs, and the internet don't qualify as authentic physical media.
A museum of young hipsters and dusty old academics pandering to them. Smartwatches aren't going to to replace watches or make them redundant, neither are valve amps or digital amps are going to replace integrated amps and a resurrected old music technology, with a needle reading a groove, that became a big trend again and became a new way the customers could get ripped off by the music industry, isn't going to kill the detailed and lossless .wav file on a cd ROM. Not when it has such a following, provides so much resilience and convenience AND has a massive electronics industry that supports it in providing sound quality that cannot be matched. But I guess we will see what happens when the youth gets sick of being ripped off abandons the vinyl trend. Digital and streaming will be king and there may be a cd resurgence, since it is superior to the vinyl format, as a physical medium, in every way, except having big album covers on a bit of cardboard.
I.don't want COs to become obsolete! I used to own over 5,000 albums. Vinyl has too many problems with it. Surface noise, warpage, bad pressings, dreadful coloured vinyl, the extortionate price! With CD's there are virtually no problems. I own over 7 thousand CD's not a problem with any of them. It's a subjective reasoning ultimately. I personally see little evidence of CD's disappearing! In conclusion, storage is far easier. The only plus for me with vinyl is the sound. But all the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages.
I tend to disagree. Was in Wal Mart the other day and to my surprise the had a section with a nice little chunk available. They were absent and now back. Yeah nothing huge but glad to see them in there. Phil Aston has some videos on his channel about the CD format supporting it's relevance. th-cam.com/users/shortsDRkGolq3kcA?si=cnGydP2Jz6OrKagW th-cam.com/video/FJw15SfzC70/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8imVKWuFJnq2en2r
They have a pair of AR 3 speakers in the Smithsonian. The first popular acoustic suspension speaker. That does not mesn speakers are going out of style. AR, the brand, I haven't seen in a while. The last time I seen anything AR, was their interconnects at Best Buy. For a while Best Buy looked like they couldn't decide whether to carry Monster Cable or AR cables. Cds sound better than streaming, we are told by many high end audio reviewers, which if they tell us right, cds sound better than even high end streamers. Cds are cleaner sounding than vinyl on very good cd playback equipment, which makes cd the best, or one of the two best formats we have. I do not see tons of people buying a turntable to pay $30 to $40+ for new vinyl. Just as most people do not have high end stereos because of cost, the majority are never going to opt for the more expensive proposition of buying music. A format that has very inconsistent pressings compared to cd. Analog does have a noticeably more natural sound, but the showier sound presentation of cd is good also, and I would guess more impressive to most. People galore believe that lps have better sound because they are told so by people like Michael Fremer. He published his own magazine for a while called The Tracking Angle. An all all analog magazine in the middle of cds most popular years. It apparently didn't do all that well. Michael Fremer in print, said years ago, that the Mobile Fiidelity Abraxas by Santana lp was absolutely the best sound quality of any recording he ever heard. Later it was revealed that particular lp was recorded from a digital copy of the analog tape. Cds are just more practical than vinyl, even beyond just cost and convenience. They have so many advantages. They have cd sets with 5 cd titles in one set for $20 or so. Buying 5 new lps, most with digital mastering could cost $200 or more. Actually it's a no brainer. If cds do ever go extinct, it won't be because of vinyl, it will be because physical formats have become obsolete.
Somehow I am feeling quite Patheticlly OLD right now.. I own over 2000, CDs! and very little Vynal albums.. I DO Have an Android Samsung Galaxy Smart phone though right now.. Is that in a Museum now too! I have Not bought a CD in about 10 years now.. Why = The Internet exists, and I got tired of Wasting $$ on Artists who Really do not care about me.. They and their record companies just want my $$. I used to be a Loyal fan of some Artists.. But Really I would rather sve my future, than spend $$ on Stuff, like Music and All of the Gimmics that it brings, Like Box Sets and Commemoritive things. I want to SELL all of my Music, Maybe.. But I do not want to pay taxes on things that I own, and already have paid taxes on, when I bought them! Best to keep in an OLD Collection museum of my own right now.
I still collect CDs but I can see it coming to an end simply because A) I don't listen to new bands B) I don't enjoy newer albums from acts that should retire eg. Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Iron Maiden, etc. I listen to their new albums maybe 2-3 times then they're on the shelf. There's not one band I listen to anymore that if they broke up I'd be upset.
I don’t think any act should retire. Some of the recent albums by old bands have definately been duds. Although Judas Priest was amazing, Metallica was nothing new but sounds like death magnetic which is good. Iron maiden I can’t get into at all. They probably struggled for consistent albums from 2006 onwards. The book of souls was better though than senjutsu another latest album dud.
Depends on what streaming service you are using, I use Apple Music, which streams in lossless and Hi-Rez files for certain albums so technically the sound is better than CDs when it’s high rez
It's the black t-shirt brigade, guys like you of a certain age, that will ensure the resurgence of CDs. Your desperation to regain your former "muso status" from back in the day is fast becoming a turn off - and once people start seeing vinyl as uncool again, then it's all over. There's millions of people out here in the real world who love music first, the format second. Do you really seriously think that such a successful format as the CD is going to disappear off the face of the earth - no of course it wont't! In fact it has all the makings of becoming THE most collectable format in years to come. Sales of CDs are rising, prices are rising - you need to study eBay and Discogs more carefully. Once you get away from the mass market stuff, CDs have retained their value very well. PS: I have about 4000 CDs - Jazz, World Music, Latin, Classical, Opera, Soul, Indian music, African, Greek... and I'm still collecting with a passion. The great thing is that 99.9% of the CDs I buy are absolutely free of DEFECTS!
I quit cds 12 years ago and went fully digital using an iPod. I am only interested in listening to the music and not collecting. Plus I filled up all these cabinets with cds and was running out of space. My car does not have a cd player in it either.
Well, all physical media is on the way out. This vinyl revival is just a phase. I personally buy both cds and vinyls. Cds generally have better sound but lack that warm vinyl retro feel to it. But the sound is often not as good apart from some exceptions ofcourse. This is a generalization but technically it is also a fact to some degree. New vinyl recordings is no use. I would only praise those analog recordings. The rest is just a digital recording transfered to vinyl, which sounds worse. King Diamond made it differently with the latest releases of the albums where they transfered the analog recordings on to the new vinyl. These are perhaps worth getting.
It's about time the CD goes extinct. CDs are one of the main causes that I Stopped buying new music in the early mid 90's. Other than portability CDs are junk

They never will! 💿
If there comes a day when you can no longer buy Vinyl Records, CDs or Cassette Tapes, I’ll just stop buying music.
Still a fan of CDs! Especially new releases and reissues. I love vinyl too, but own more CDs.
What was #1 again? Lots of tangents...
Sorry I didn't vote but buy cds and vinyl xx every month ❤
I still have a lot of my vinyl and CDs but i mostly Spotify, most convenient
Super weak arguments. Most stores including wal mart got rid of ALL media not just cds. Most don't have dvds or vinyl either. Only one local store has a media department. It stocks DVDs, vinyl and loads of CDs. $40 for vinyl $10 for same album on CD. I still sell cds on ebay. This video is totaly out of touch with reality. I don't have time for videos this pointless. Have just unsubed.
Another weak argument: CD players not available in cars. Remember when each car had a turntable to play vinyl records?
I will still buy cds 💿 I buy them every two Fridays I still listen to them in my car 🚗. I have vinyl and cassettes to and I still buy all three walmart's are starting to carry alot of cds 💿. I still have a 5 disc changer. My local record carrys cds 💿 and I have the owner from my local record store order me the newest cds 💿 my wife has a cassette and a cd 💿 player in her car 🚗
Vinyl for me. Wromg ralley, I know, but there you go.😊
CDs forever. My collection consists of right about 3,000 currently. Mostly Metal, and I add more every month. There are many affordable and easy options to have players wherever you want them.
Hoping vinyl with it's large presentation and packaging will stay well for years 🙏.
Likely, no 😢but I do hope it does.
CD collectors spent 537 million on discs last year ! Never gonna stop, they are just a little more work to find.
Doom On!
dude what world are you living in? CD sales are up infact 3x higher than digital...
Another question for the poll: how many people have a cd player in their car THAT ACTUALLY WORKS.
I do.

Thanks for the comment, maybe Walmart is starting to bring CDs back! That would be cool
Hi John hope you are well my friend
For cars there are better solutions than cd's.
Watch them try to get a CD case open😅
You’ve gotta expand your horizons man! Theres tons of killer new music out there nowadays from new and older bands.
Well you got that wrong.
CDs are far superior in sound to streaming and are robust and cheap. They ain't going anywhere soon.
Depends on what streaming service you are using, I use Apple Music, which streams in lossless and Hi-Rez files for certain albums so technically the sound is better than CDs when it’s high rez
Any remote controlled turntable? 😂
I'd agree, but you're obviously wrong. CDs outlive fragile azz vinyl.
Cds and cassette better than Vinyl Vinyl has too much maintenance for me
exactly
Cassettes do get eaten up. And they're irreplaceable now - especially the ones that are out of print.
The great thing is that 99.9% of the CDs I buy are absolutely free of DEFECTS!
. A metal head complaining his prius has no cd player
. THAT is why cds and metal are dead 💀
wait...so because I wanted a CD player in my car that means metal and CDs are dead?
@@LairoftheAlchemist. wait , because you say cds are becoming extinct they are becoming extinct ?
. get it?
@@zerorez4960 no actually I don't but I don't really want to spend anytime figuring it out so thanks for you comment.
These are perhaps worth getting.
most 10 year olds don't know what a CD is even now
It's about time the CD goes extinct.
CDs are one of the main causes that I Stopped buying new music in the early mid 90's.
Other than portability CDs are junk
Head wobble time
i have more lps than cds but cds are better
