    The MiSTer does an amazing job with this core, and bsnes is amazing as well. Bsnes/higan quickly became my preferred SNES emulator more than a decade ago, and was certainly a huge step up in accuracy from ZSNES or SNES9X in the late 90s/early 00s. I'm glad Near made a push for SNES emulation accuracy, and it's too bad their life got cut short.

    Great video, as usual. 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻
    I'm not surprised to see this was such an even match. As far as I understand it, MiSTer's SNES core started out as a translation of BSNES's code to VHL.
    It's one of the most shining examples of how software and hardware-based emulation can help each other out.

    To be clear, the MiSTer doesn’t really have an ‘OS footprint’. Linux is running on the arm to service USB input and help with SD functionality. Both of these things can be avoided (SNAC and loading ROM into RAM). Effectively meaning that there is no OS involved in the running of the core on the FPGA itself. I appreciate these videos from the sync perspective… the real benefit however, is latency and analog output. Hard to capture the differences there, and retroarch BSNES has run ahead now I believe which may make up some of the difference there. I think you should look into how to capture latency differences… that’s truly where the MiSTer will shine.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will touch on latency in the future

    • @lukasperuzovic1429
      @lukasperuzovic1429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Linux side of the MiSTer is still used even with Snac, the Linux side mostly carry file hosting duties (your Roms and Bios files) and general house keeping of everything on the SD card, including loading cores. The Linux side is also what runs all of the scripts.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it’s not like it’s completely missing in the background

    • @klurman
      @klurman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VideoGameEsoterica no, but it doesn’t affect the actual core operation. The core logic can run without the ARM entirely. Of course, we want to have Linux to help with things like file system operation, but again that’s an optional thing. It’s entirely possible to add sd handling to a core, the second SD slot on the analog board has been used by some cores for just this.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess the reality is mixed. You can’t say the OS footprint isn’t there, but you can say it doesn’t affect the operation. Same with Windows. It’s running but so long as you have resources to spare it’s not really an “issue” in the equation

    About colour difference, one or the other can be the right one, and in both cases you've got options to change the color palette, for sure in Bsnes (standalone or Retroarch) and I think that in MisTer too, same way you can have other fancy things, more usual in software emulation, like scanlines on it.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica

      Also good to keep on mind that not only were their revisions of the console, everyone back then was using analog video output originally (like R/F, composite, SCART) and the picture could vary from one television to another. Then there are differences with how it looked on NTSC vs PAL (and perhaps also vs SECAM?), so there definitely is no one single correct look/pallet, just acceptable approximations, which really goes for any classic console or computer that was mainly used with an analog display.

      if you change your video card in your computer, brighness colours will probably change too. because they probably don't use the same video chipset to encode the video signal into RGB. the original video encoder in the SNES is very poor, the one-ship SNES model provide a beter rendenring but colours are different than the original one. it's the same difference between the FPGA emulator and the BSNES program. it's not an emulation difference. you can hear the same change with different audio cards or different hifi models.

    Accuracy is not the problem with emulators, the real problem is ""input lag"" / latency / Frame Delay and reproduction of the real hardware and this is where the MisTer shine and where emulators fail. Mister = Simulation. Emulators = recompiler/compiler (adding instructions before the input and translated in code to display on-screen). You can't compare the both. It's impossible to play Mario Bros with an emulator. Also, MisTer let you connect to a CRT so for real deal.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean it’s not easy but you can hook up a modern PC to a CRT as well but I get where you are coming from
      There is lag and there is “perceivable lag” IMO. One isnt an issue and the other is game breaking

    • @richr161
      @richr161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Software emulators solve that with run ahead. It'll have less input lag than the original version. You should try it out. The way it works is ingenious when you look into it.

    • @beetwing
      @beetwing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richr161 I know abour run ahead and tried it and it still not onpar with the real hardware or Mister. It doesn't feel natural and when you press buttons and many directions in games like Mario or Mortal Kombat it is not outputing the wanted action/frame and many case. On paper it's a good idea. In real life it has limits.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica

    • @richr161
      @richr161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beetwing You wouldn't use it on fighting games because moves are tied to frames.
      You screw with the timing as input lag is a factor in inputs for fighting game.
      Each game needs to be configured depending on how many input frames of lag are on the original system. It's generally between 1-3 frames of input lag on the original system.
      Mario works fine for run ahead. You get better latency than the original console when hooked up to a Crt. The inputs for that game aren't that complicated. If i remember correctly there is 1 frame on input lag on the original console.

    That's exactly why a Pi with Retro-Pi would have been a much better comparison.
    You then mention how the pricing compares between a PC and the MiSTer... again.. a single board mini PC is cheaper than either the MiSTer or a home PC.

There is also turbo functionality, and the ability to pair the controller as an xbox pad, switch pro etc. If you don't have/don't want Bluetooth there is a wired option as well. Increasing max swapchain images to 4 and enabling sync to exact content framerate seems to have done the trick on my system and it's now perfectly smooth in relation to motion. Turning on black frame insertion in addition entirely removes motion blur for perfect crt like motion, at the expense of some brightness. However I do get an occasional black frame popping up every now and then with black frame insertion enabled, which I have not yet been able to fix.

      @@VideoGameEsoterica I was not entirely correct with my previous comment, swapchain images does not need to be increased unless black frame insertion is used, which otherwise will result in audio crackling with the default swapchain value, at least with my system. This seems to be performance related. Also black frame insertion apparently can damage some screens through image retention, which appears to be some kind of screen burn in effect.
      The improved motion actually seems to be coming from disabling vsync, enabling sync to exact content framerate, as well as disabling fast-forward frameskip and setting fast-forward rate to 0.0x within the frame throtte sub-menu. This means the screen is only replying upon sync to exact content framerate for image synchronization and the motion is much improved. To me it now looks the same as the mister recording. I'm using a 120hz g-sync display if that makes any difference.
      I will need to test this further, I'm already hours into testing just today and it's a bit exhausting chasing the perfect settings. I hope this helps.

      @@VideoGameEsoterica This might be where the mister is superior to emulation, as I'd assume that the system would output a perfectly stable framerate for a consistent and fluid image, so it wouldn't need to rely upon any additional mechanism that tries to constantly balance out lower and higher framerates against the screen refresh rate, which apparently does degrade motion to some extent, unless you find some kind of work around. I might have to get myself a mister, even if it's just for further resting and trying to dial in emulators to be more close to hardware performance.

    DKC sound is tough, it's emulating the KORG family of MIDI instead of using the voices already on the sony chip. EDIT: This is wrong. the chip generally is fed the sound samples at boot.
    On Megaman X... that's also a very difficult one for me, since I've player it as much in an SNES back in the day as I've done it on the PSP version and the recent collection re-release... and they all sound great. I'll go with 2, and blame TH-cam compression if it's not the one.

      Man, after a quick googling the way the chip works is far more complicated that I supposed at first! I was wrongly assuming it had at least a few wave tables available as other chips of the era, and the fact that someone recently grafted a keyboard to a snes to get DAT reverb just helped with my misconceptions.

      The Mister is still born from software right? the underlying implementation of the FPGA is made by humans that have to understand the snes first. There isn't the full snes there inside, there is just a reproduction of it. Software can be super accurate, is just a matter to have a full pc to run it correctly.

      @@AndreaBogazzi Yeah, good point! I guess it’s because I played emulators when they first came out and the accuracy wasn’t really good as opposed to the MiSTer being almost perfect from the first time I booted it that I make a difference out of them :-)
