Ukraine relies on drones to make up for artillery shortage | DW News

- Russia says its forces have downed eleven drones launched by Ukraine over the region of Rostov. Kyiv is increasingly relying on drones in its fight against Russia to make up for its lack of artillery power.
The unmanned aircraft are effective at destroying Russian defensive positions. But military analysts warn that drones alone won't be enough to win the war.

So you want to say that Russia with access to the vast chineese drone market lacks behind drone capability and fires blindfolded? My guess is that they not only have more ammo but more drones as well...
The difference is cheap chinese drones are very vulnerable to EW jamming. Ukraines own homemade drones, however...
Do you seriously think China trusts their best drones to Russia? Why would China do that? That's senseless.

Long answer : Russia also has cheap drones and artillery so it isn't a advantage for Ukraine

1:35 "Yet, drones do have their drawbacks. It's estimated that less than a third find their target. [...]" How does this estimate compare with artillery?
well about 80% of casualties in this conflict is from artillery so... recently Russia have found ways to jam drones and cut of internet in the area of operation. so they've become less and less effective... even then often times the Ukrainians don't actually hit a target they just randomly fly them into houses etc and hope it gets somebody.
So far artillery hasn’t sunk any ships or destroyed aircraft, whereas drones have.

Are you sure that in the event of a direct conflict, the same drones will not fly over critical infrastructure in Europe? LNG terminals, gas and oil storage facilities, power plants. The conflict in Ukraine has proven that the EU has very weak air defense, and any drone for 500 euros can cause multi-billion dollar damage.
The only reason the EU feels safe is the lack of answers from Russia.
Just what exactly will Russia lose? Russia already won 20% of Ukrainian territory which Ukraine will never get back again. @@faisalhs6493 Really? what if I told you that hundreds of thousands drones are being produced as we speak. One drone operator might be far more "productive" than a sniper. It is a game changer. And you said it yourself: "" Sure they can blow up a tank". T-90Ms reportedly costs around $4.5 million, a drone strapped with a RPG costs less than $2000. I leave the math to you.
Naval drone is just starlink.
Some have suggested AI driven drones, which don't require human operator to guide them, might be a way to counteract the jamming. The problem would be programming them to only kill enemy targets. A dumb AI drone would see any person it encountered as a target/enemy. Once you work that out, jamming them would be irrelevant.
The technology of autonomous swarm drones is already available. They don't play this card in the low-tech war that the Ukraine Russia conflict is. It would be a waste to use in this war and make it less effective in a future war. There is a lot of technology that is available but is not used in this conflict for that reason.

It's ridiculous ...

But ...
For ru its nothing ...
Give Ukraine weapons for war ...
Drones and unmanned ships can be operated from anywhere. This is why the German Chancellor said NATO has already participated in the war. Ukraine will certainly continue to use drones and unmanned boats vigorously.
As long as they are on the Ukrainian side, no matter who controls them, it can be counted as a victory for Ukraine. On the other hand NATO can also participate remotely to avoid the excuse of direct participation in the war. This is also a way that NATO and Ukraine will feel harmonious and win-win.
NATO needs to invest more in drones. I'm doubtful that drones alone can win the war but they can certainly slow the Russians down, especially the ones hitting the oil refineries. To win the war NATO needs to put its economies into mass production mode and greatly increase the flow of weapons to Ukraine. The Ukrainians need mine-clearance equipment. The mines are on a scale that hasnt been seen since WW2 - I read about a 1 sq mile area with about 2,500 mines. NATO dithered too much in 2023 which was a missed opportunity, allowing Russia to build the Surovikin Line.
NATO countries struggle to get support to send more aid, so they will not get support to put their industry into military production... it's a silly thing to say
The world needs freedom stop wars 🙏🙏🙏
there seems to be some top down message about drones not being to win the war. I suspect it is monetarily driven. Drones can win the war,, simply put there is not the expertise or technology given to Ukraine to use gps satellite guidance for drones,, or shall I say previously set points where jamming will have no effect. Also as I have mentioned before there is tech where satellites relay signals and thus come directly towards the earth, not horizontal, or any obtuse angle. Thus a signal receiver that is protected and placed on top of drone will not be effected by jamming signals which emmenate from the ground.
There is also pulse guidance systems where the signal is pre programmed to be emitted and received at precise points in time,, thus evading the constant jamming waves that collectively shut down drones ( those jamming waves takes seconds to create an effect ).
This is just like every other invention,,, 'oh it will never work,', until someone figures out how to make it work!
We can all be saviours of freedom and contribute to containing Russia. For example, by donating to Ukraine24 which finances drone programmes.
Artillery is the God of War.
Note that drones is a tool. Both side can employ it.
If it good, both will use it. In drone cases, yeah both side employ it really well. Its drone warfare age at present time. We saw water drones put mission kill multiple expensive Russian ships, and we see the Russian Lancet destroying expensive Ukrainian stuff.
Its a good recon utility and eliminating the need to endanger a soldier to be a scout/sniper. A nice short range guided payload delivery system. Also, the anti drones jammers are developed simply because how effective drone is in a battlefield.
It's amazing how little Ukraine needs to acheive so much.
Ukraine is done. So simple.
God Bless Ukraine 🇺🇦 🇺🇦🇺🇦❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
What is the fundamental reason that drones cannot replace artillery?
In artillery, a target is identified with ISR platforms, then a munition is delivered to the target by accelerating it to a high speed with high pressure generated by explosive combustion, and then by conservation of momentum.
For a drone, a target is identified with ISR platforms, then a munition is delivered to the target by electrically driven aerodynamic propellers, guided via wireless communication.
It seems in the end which is 'better' comes down to quantity, cost, and efficiency. Drone used here is basically a self-propelled munition, and if it can match per unit cost and lethality of artillery, why can it not substitute artillery in effect?
They are telling nonsense! They just find one thing after another to keep hope and justify the continuation of war despite heavy losses. There is no hope for Ukraine whatsoever. It already has replaced artillery somewhat, and is cheaperctoo...
Especially the continuous wearing of arty tubes. Expensive kit.
Taking into account Moore's law as it applies to technological development and the trend toward automation, I'd expect the Ukrainian military to resort to UAVs. We're in the twenty-first century right?
