    1964 I was 16 years old. I saw this at the movies. I was taken aback by the storyline, Shelley Winters is magnificent. Sad in many cases but nevertheless a movie I never forgot and it’s 16 it really made a unique impression on me. The song itself became a song I truly love through the years and obviously sung by others. It’s funny how certain things just get stuck in your head And you never forget

      I was 16, too. I heard about the movie back then but never saw until now, at 75. Great theme song by Hal David and Bacharach.

      I was 17 in 64! I agree on how certain movies, songs all made impressions! I can hear an old 60s song and remember where I was when it was playing. and what I was doing. and friends I was with stayed with me! 🤗

    A House is Not a Home is my all-time favorite Bacharach-David who are my all-time favorite writer, arranger, composer, lyricist of any era. So much nostalgia and emotion in the song. Burt does it solo on TH-cam at age 92. I'm 77 and it tears me up every time I listen.

    I remember Kaye Ballard from the 60's tv show The Mother in Laws. I was recovering from appendicitis surgery in the hospital and I tried watching it and thought I was going to rip my stiches open. It was hilarious.

    It doesn't have to continue defining her if she can get past it. Self forgiveness and self acceptance goes a long way. Your past is part of your past but YOU ARE NOT your past. Profound movie. Loved it!

    • @Woodman-Spare-that-tree
      @Woodman-Spare-that-tree 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah you are. Because you have to live with the CONSEQUENCES of the events of your past. Also, you talk as though you have no conscience. You are saying you can beat up another person, put them in a wheelchair, and then you can carry on living your life happily because of “self forgiveness and you are not your past”. Sorry, but what you say is just not true.

      @@Woodman-Spare-that-tree yes, i kind of agree.... go back to what anyway, the light side of depravity rather than the dark side of depravity, which is a truth that is revealed to one on the dark side of depravity... there is salvation possble, but only in what Christ taught us... not in so-called respectable society.

    The opening song is just one of so many great songs wrote back in those days, my Parents danced in our Living Room all the time whether it was in the morning or at noon and at night and that great Music playing and making all those memories of watching my parents dancing and kissing and it made me so happy my Parents loved each other so much and they had tons of records and that is what made our home and I always sang like my Parents did and it fed my soul and made us grow and become real people my brothers and I were born in the 1940's , 43, 44, 45. Those were better years then you think and people had jobs and cars and could buy a home and have nice clothes and kids and go on vacations and eat good food. My Mom could buy a steak that hung over a dinner Plate and look what you get today for one the size of the palm of a hand. So thank god I was born in those times we had a lot to be grateful for and we were.!!!!!

      That was one of my favorite lines in this movie too. I think what she meant is you're not loved or respected if you're poor. It's sad that some people turn their noses up at poor people. It's even worse when you go to church and someone whom is supposed to be a Christian turns their nose up just because that poor person didn't have nice clothes or a nice car. To me that's heart breaking. I don't think women should be treated like this ever. I believe in God and I believe in the devil and demons .... and believe me for a man to treat a woman like this all they are is just evil perverted demons. This is a sad movie to me. Although Shelly Winters is a phenomenal actress in this movie. She was one of the best actresses ever . May she RIP .

    Uau... finally somebody had unpload this movie. Shelley is excellent as allways she was. The future star Raquel Welch as one of the Polly´s girls. And... the beautiful stand Bacharach/David´s theme sung by Brook Benton.

    My big sister and mother took us to see this at the local drive-in (Manahawkin, NJ, LBI Mainland). Dad was pissed for its inappropriateness. I was only 11, my brother, 14. Can remember any of it. From 1964. (This is Oct. 2019) That was over 55 years ago.

    A little uneven at times but still a very good movie overall . It can be very very Hard for most people who become "tarnished" or corrupted, to obtain redemption . A bad reputation is difficult to wipe away or overcome in this world. In that sense the film is very realistic so definitely recommend this movie as 'worth watching'.

    The man at 46:33....isn't that Broderick Crawford? If so, I saw him when I was 6, or 7yrs old. I barely remember it, but he came to my home town, in S.C.. He was at the Chevrolet dealership..signing autographs, on pictures of himself. He was shooting this pistol..which had blanks in it. He did a lot of talking about some role he playing. I still don't know why he came there, since it was a very small town. Mama kept that picture a long time, but I never saw it again after we moved to Florida. The thing I remember the most...was him firing that loud pistol.

    I know a woman who is 99 right now, I keep her company by reading stories to her. And she was a child when her mother ran a rooming house back in the 20’s and 30’s. And she was saying back in those days all the little guys were greasing palms with Some of the police officers, some of the gangsters, and some of the politicians. This rooming house that her mother ran used to make bootleg liquor, and the desk sergeant at one of the police departments will call her and let her know when there was going to be a raid.
    Those days sure were something, and I love hearing the stories!
