I'm a forager and use mine to carry heavy loads of chaga and reishi. Just lost it in a fire. I am building my own , similar to the one shown. Anyone thinking of buying one , know this. It's a lot of work to build one and for yuppie use like mine , they will last forever ( unless it burns in a fire lol) . Also buy one like the one shown , black ash. There are cheap ones made of maple veneer that are crap. Maple is the least rot resistant wood ever.
You can always unroll your sleeping pad inside of the pack basket and put your stuff in the middle. That way it will not take up much room at all. ultralight backpackers use this to add structure when their backpack has no frame.
Leif, I have used one since I was a teenager. I have one hanging on my wall as I write this. I have made one once before, and it is a laborious project involving pounding out ash splints. I smoked mine to stain it, and just linseed oil it to protect it.
I recently purchased one also. Mine is 24inches tall, which when you dont see the basket doesnt sound like it would be to big but its much bigger then it sounds haha i love it though. Use it everytime i go out in the woods, hope you enjoy yours

I have a bad back, and my basket pack hits in just the right place: I actually feel better carrying it than without the pack at all.
love the idea of using this.
looking forward to see you use more of the Old School stuff man.
5/5 again thanks a mil for posting.

The rigity of the basket must work as good as an pack with a frame. thanks for sharing.

24" is huge ! They use to make them even bigger. I'm going to build one about this size. Not a trapper so it won't be full of heavy traps.
I will most likely use my tarp and a "blanket" for the top. Time and use will tell.
Bushcraft with out all the high tech?
The more weight in the basket the tighter and more rigid it becomes.
We don't need no stinking lid hehehe. I am not come camo guy so blending in isn't a concern of mine haha.
These packs are Ideal for trapping!! I use one!! Great video as always!! 5/5 ED
very cool
Very nice!

So whats the difference between danish oil, linseed oil, and shellac? and if they are pretty much the same, which one do you prefer?
Spar varnish is the best for waterproofing and permanance. It's what they use on snowshoes
Too much to type here, best to go look them up. They are all different.
I mean "fire making methods"
Yeah the site has been down all day. I have his number if you need it though.
