    If elephants die of a broken heart from loneliness then just imagine their emotional trauma when they see their mums shot and poached in front of them. We need to crush the ivory trade and we need to protect all wildlife extensively even if it is a huge economic cost to society.

      Elephants have extremely long, vivid memories, and have been observed in the wild mourning over skeletons of other elephants. They're very emotional and intelligent and remember people who were good or bad to them.
      They're sacred to my people and many other countries in SE Asia for this reason.

    That young female elephant was just marvelous with Ndotto, and he seemed to understand the comfort she was offering. So happy that the situation seemed to work out. How could the villagers kill one of these intelligent, sentient animals for no reason? And she had a small baby with her. Sometimes I hate people, but then I must remember that there are wonderful people like these wildlife workers who work on rehabbing :) Thanks for this.

      Elephants trample their crops and also nothing more dangerous than an elephant with their child who feels threatened. It’s very easy for humans and elephants to come into dangerous situations with each other as they loose their territory to human development

      @nadiabairamis3854 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@mortalclown3812 no that’s not what I said- there is a difference between hunting them specifically or defending your crops and family etc.
      however.. poachers will often offer locals huge amounts of money to help them get elephants. When you have a family to feed it’s hard to resist.
      To save the elephants we need to stop the demand of elephant tusks and stop continually reducing their territory.
      These seem impossible tho..
      but programs that help out and work with local villages and farmers to live with and maybe even benefit from Elephants continued existence helps.

    • @hiighway_chile4080
      @hiighway_chile4080 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Villagers often don't attack elephants unless their crops got eaten and /or an elephant charged and attacked a villager. Poachers are the cruel ones because they're driven by greed..they don't even have mercy to end the suffering of the baby elephant left behind..they'll just kill the mom and leave the baby to starve and suffer.

      I have heard there are some animal welfare organizations in Africa that tells and shows people that they are rescuing baby animas and they take care of them until they get old and then they are sold to poachers and hunters (basically rich men from western countries that thinks hunting and taking a pic with the hunted animals makes them looks cool and rich). I am not saying that this is the same type of organization but be careful and try to gather all the info about the well beings of the animals before donating any such welfare organization. I really wish that the genuine ones get all the help and donations to keep up their nobel work

    I just now read an article on this orphan Ndotto. August 7th 2014, he was a fresh newborn, still had umbilical cord...he was around Ndotto Mountains following a herd of cows, he thought was his family, and their herders home to Samburu. The community contacted David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust after keeping him warm and safe overnight. A helicopter had to come get him because it was such a remote location! The Samburu community gave him cows milk, they meant well but harmed him without knowing.
    He was saved in time 😀 the rescue provided him with elephant plasma for immune system, then special formula and a glucose drip to hydrate.
    A side note about the Ndotto people: someone in their community hiked about 20+ hours to find help for this elephant! How amazing those people were.
    I read this from Africa Geographic website article and thought I would share!

Ndotto means "to dream" and Mbegu means "little seed" in Swahili (because she was the smallest, yet very mighty). It is extremely disturbing shit with the amount of cognitive dissonance people have regarding animals, and the advertisements that are put on videos like this that pay tribute to animals! 😡

      @@wms72
      99% of abortions happen when fetuses don’t even have a functioning nervous system that can feel pain (the remaining 1% are only done for extreme circumstances where the mother’s life is in danger, etc).
      _Embryos/fetuses cannot even feel pain until at least the 28th week of gestation._ And there isn’t an issue of human species endangerment like there is with elephants (in fact, we have an issue of overpopulation!).
      Here in the USA, no state allows abortion past that point in time (28 weeks), except for rare and extreme circumstances (like I mentioned before -- the mother's life is at risk, or the fetus has a terrible genetic disease wherein it is suffering or will suffer a lot post birth, or will only die after birth, but not before it suffers a lot first).
      You probably eat animals everyday that are fully developed, and have no problem whatsoever with killing/eating them, but for some reason people like yourself flip out over a fetus *that can’t even feel pain yet* being eliminated, so that their fully developed mother can live a better life.
      Yeah, as a woman I am always going to prioritize my life over something that can make my life a living hell depending on the circumstances. Deal with it. For the record though, I have never had an abortion, and I also haven’t eaten animals in 30 years.

    It’s interesting to see how the older female elephant decided to approach Ndotto. She didn’t overwhelm him with lots of attention or energy, but instead gently pressed her body against his and positioned herself where he could press his head against her, very comforting to a baby. Once he yielded, she caressed him gently with her trunk. They are indeed so much like humans. We, too, read nonverbal cues from youngsters in determining how to interact.

      They are capable of deep emotion, from love to terror, have the ability to think abstractly, and engage in ritualistic behavior when grieving their dead. They aren't people, but it's clear their capacity for emotion, higher order thinking, and understanding of symbolism puts them at least on the sentience level of human children. For these reasons I think they should benefit from the human judicial system, a kind of non-human citizenship. Killing an elephant should be punishable by 25 to life, just like killing a child would be. Death and trauma are no less real to them than it is to us.
