  • Drive to Changla Pass (High Altitude Pass in Ladakh) by Car in Snowfall (June 2015). During road trip to Pangong Lake (Pangong Tso) from Leh, one need to cross Changla. Snowfall in June!!!
YES, it was snowfall in June... snow all around, we enjoyed Winter in June, it was heavy snowfall last night also during our drive, vehicles getting stuck in snow, due to continuous snowfall and skidding issue, we have to tie Iron Chain around the Car Tire.
Chang La is approached from Leh via Kharu and Sekti village by an asphalt road. The climb is very steep and requires a careful drive. During the summer months specifically the tourist season, small streams appear across the road, making the climb a challenge for the bikers. The descent from Chang La towards Tangtse or Darbuk is again very steep. As per the medics, it is advisable to not stay at the top for more than 20-25 minutes as it could be detrimental to health owing to its high altitude.
Due to Snowfall, a thick layer of snow was on the road and surroundings. Vehicles specially Bikers were struggling due to snow on the road, extreme weather conditions, bad roads and AMS problem but the Mesmerizing Beauty of Changla makes this place photographer’s delight. Scary roads and never before experience makes Ladakh, Adventurer’s Paradise. One of the most memorable drive from leh to changla and further till Pangong Lake. The place is famous for its scenic and serene natural beauty which attracts tourists from all around the world.
We faced traffic jam due to Heavy Snowfall. BRO put their full efforts to clear the roads.
The third highest motorable mountain pass in the world, Chang La Pass, situated at an altitude of 5,360 meter or 17,590 feet above sea level. The name literally means "Pass towards the South" or "Pass in the South" (Chang = south, La = Pass). It is claimed that Chang La is named after the Sadhu Changla Baba.
The Changla Pass is the main gateway for the Changthang Plateau situated in the Himalayas. The world’s highest research station, established by the Defence Research and Development Organisation is functional in Chang La.
These high altitude passes are one of the reason why road trip to Ladakh is a preferred mode of Ladakh trip. Crossing these passes with snow capped peaks, barren landscape and view of undulating valley add to the adventure of Leh Ladakh travel. One must cross Changla Pass to reach famous Pangong Tso Lake, one of the largest high altitude lakes in India. There is a tea point at the Chang La Pass where hot tea is served to the tourists and public convenience is also available unlike many other passes in Laddakh.
