The term “seam” describes the line or path where two pieces of material are joined. In sewing, every seam has a stitch line, but not every stitch line forms a seam. When a stitch line joins two pieces of material, it forms a seam. Very often a seam is made with a single stitch line, and then the two terms are interchangeable and can describe the same thing. Sometimes a single seam is reinforced with multiple stitch lines to make it stronger. When altering clothing to make it fit better, you either “take in a seam” (make it smaller) or “let out a seam” (make it bigger) by removing the existing stitches and then sewing a new stitch line along a different path to change the seam. A stitch line may also be just decorative and not functional, like in embroidery where your spell out a word or make a flower with a stitch line. In that case you have a stitch line but no seam.
