Hey Ben , I saw your presentation at data minds connect this week and it was the best presentation of the 3 days I have been there 😊 > I asked the question about whether the Deneb layering approach could significantly impact performance on which you confirmed it does not not besides the usual minor amount that every custom visual has.
Now another point I found very interesting is the 'dilemma' on when to choose for Deneb. Like you mentioned Kurt (the data goblin) recommends staying as standard (and thus as natively supported) as possible. The mantra for production environments "Just because you can, does not mean you should" supports the idea to only use Deneb when you are too confined by the standard visuals. Stability is the reason I try to stay as far from custom visuals as I can. But...
Since Deneb is declarative and thus templating and versioning is very much possible (which I like), I was wondering about the other extreme: what if you would only use Deneb templates? I know this is extreme and only scoping teams where every member would know Deneb, but it's just to make my point for a discussion :) Also aware that when the key guy that maintains it would drop the project, there could be a world of pain.
Sorry for this brain dump, wanted to ask in the session, but there were time constraints eh ;)
    Cheers

Hey, first of all thank you so much for attending and I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the session!
In your question do you mean what if a company were to use *only* Deneb templates for all reports and no core visuals? Whilst this is extreme, I do know companies which only use Zebra BI visuals, and no core visuals. I honestly would favour the use of only Deneb over that, as you keep the skills in-house and you know the skill requirement. I wouldn't pursue this strategy if you only had one Vega-Lite developer, but with a couple it would be doable. Regarding performance, what I didn't mention is that by use concatenation you can also create a report page, which displays multiple visuals, but is actually only one Deneb visual. Whilst this is of course more complex, it can actually sometimes *improve* report page loading times.
Feel free to contact me on LinkedIn if you want to chat more about it. 😊

much better ineed! It would be nice if it would signal that it is just showing one value of the legend

great video - I'll be using this. Is there any way we can select more than one item from the legend? Switching the categories on and off essentially

Thank you! Yeah it works well with ctrl-click too, so you can select multiple items, if that's what you mean?
