For vessel, a twenty-gun ship For home, the blue confines of the sea For law, the northen wind Wind that adorns The brigantine in the dark Looking for a ship to sink Looking for a ship to board As the pirate sails, he leaves behind him a trail of blood and fire. Flame of death The pirate sings on deck Sings dreams of freedom From Formentera island to the north-east of Mallorca And from the skyes of Menorca to L'Emporda Sail the sea at full sail To the island of Espalmador Where more than a hundred and thirty moons ago Among the rocks He buried his chest of gold They say he knows no fear They say they have seen him play with death They say that blood makes him fall in love And that he does not forgive No enemy laden Of rum and wheat The pirate sings on deck Sings dreams of freedom From Formentera island to the north-east of Mallorca And from the skyes of Menorca to L'Emporda Sail the sea at full sail To the island of Espalmador Where more than a hundred and thirty moons ago Among the rocks He buried his chest of gold His treasure! There are a few weird ones, like in the first verse they use Tramuntana, which like a proper noun we use for the northen winds and such
@@sayrins6196 Hello! I do some editing on the TLJ wiki; would you be ok with me adding your wonderful translation to the info page there for this song? (And if so how would you like to be credited?)
@@sayrins6196 Hey, the best translation is one that actually exists, and so far yours is all I've found, so that makes it top in my book. Thanks so much
Alas, I can read Catalan but only catch 1 word in 3 by ear, and TH-cam wants to put Indonesian subtitles on this...as far as I can tell, we are siiingiiing/about a pirate [something] and his freedom to sail and...live between rocks around Majorca for thirty months? Looking for...something, and to break something else.
Is anyone else reminded of the old famous opera song Habanera from Carmen? The timing of the broken chords that are played throughout in both songs are very very similar. Maybe a type of music from Spain?
That style of song is literally called a Habanera (or Havanera I've seen it spelled both ways) and is basically a Spanish or Catalan sea shanty equivalent
@@AnFirscealFein Wow, thank you so much! That's very helpful. I was using search engines to try to find an answer online but nothing that was coming up with the answer I was looking for. Appreciate it!
An interesting thing about songs in languages I don't understand is that my brain tries to find words it knows. So I wonder if I will ever be able to unhear the word "avskum" (scum) early in the song, and "gamla mor" (old mother) in Andy's part. Brains are silly creatures. I love the song a lot though.
The "gamla mor" part, it says (in catalan): Jugar amb la mort. In English is "dice with death". If you say me the time of the "avskum" doubt i can help you
@@papapatoyt I had a look at the lyrics on TLJ's song wiki. Seems like it's the "els con" bit of "els confins" that my brain somehow hears as "avskum". There's a translation on the wiki too, so now I even know what it means :) But my brain will probably keep trying to hear Swedish in it.
If anyone's wondering, here's what ChatGT has to say: The song is in Catalan, and it talks about a pirate sailing the Mediterranean sea in search of ships to sink or board. The lyrics mention the ship he commands, the places he visits, and his fearless attitude. The chorus talks about how the pirate sings of dreams of freedom while he sails from Formentera island to Empordà, in the northeast of Spain. The song also refers to the pirate's treasure, which he buried on the Espalmador island after more than a hundred and thirty moons. Overall, the song romanticizes the figure of the pirate, depicting him as a brave and adventurous character.
