But I had to smile with the thought of them at the controls of the last few videos I've watched...Their tiny white-gloved hand on the throttle of Union Pacific's 844 with their head out of the cab window blowing the whistle at 80 miles per hour! I bet they would smile like never before!
So, these women train operators have exactly the same demeanor as airline pilots do, in my opinion. Remember, this is Shinkansen, the fabled Bullet Train, which if I remember correctly, has been around since the 1960s. Even though their uniforms might look outdated and a bit frumpy to some, I'd venture a guess that Shinkansen has consciously decided to maintain the same uniform since it began, or changed it very little. For that, I salute Shinkansen.
Peoples wondering why I'm interested in Japan. Well, there are: 1) trains on time 2) trains stopping at the correct centimeter 3) beautiful trains 4) and BEAUTIFUL GIRLS!

It should also be pointed out that the typical American female transit operator is probably, oh I'd say, about 85 lbs overweight.)
Not only is the crew beautiful but they also have, 2:02, AMAZING voice imitation skills! All this and those neat white gloves and hats! Super cool! The male crews are very sharp as well.
The trains in the US aren't much better. The Japanese work ethic and perfectionism is what keeps the trains on time. Americans don't have the same work ethic.

In the UK there were 12 female loco drivers a few years ago, i havn't found out of many others elsewhere across the globe unsurprisingly! Not scrapped, just "demoted". The 500 series were taken off the long-distance "Nozomi" service, and placed on the local "Kodama" service for JR west. The train sets were reduced from 16 cars to 8, and the extra cars were scrapped, but what remains of them are still on the rails.
Having recently become addicted to NHK's Japan Railway Journal, I'm pretty enamored with their system's look and logic. Everything about their system is logically appealing as well as aesthetically. The sleek look of the lines of the train as well as the fashionable uniforms of the crew all serve as almost equal secondary functional purposes of design. Their look is as appealing as their function because they are so well designed.
I can't believe they call their train engineers pilots. I mean there is a huge difference in workload, intensity of training and responsibility. Almost as dumb as calling a garbage man a sanitation engineer. Call it what it really is not something it is not.
The difference being that you don't have that many human lives between your hand when operating a freight train, regardless of its size. Sure a derailment at certain locations could lead to massive damage / environmental damage / and few casualties but that's it. When you have a 16-car set Shinkansen cruising at 320 kph and 1,300 passengers inside, it's a whole different story. Especially when you are on one of the most dense traffic network in the world. You don't run massive freight trains with a 10 minutes interval. Well guess what for Shinkansen, they're almost next to each others on the tracks. You have roughly 100 departures a day (6am > 10pm) from Tokyo to the West. That's 6 departures an hour in average throughout the day (with slightly more trains at peaks). The slightest issue could lead to an accident and lead to a huge number casualties (that HSR accident in Spain resulted in 79 deaths...). So yeah this isn't like operating operating a 30000 ton freight train. High Speed Rail drivers (could it be in Japan, rest of Asia or Europe) are the elite of train drivers and have way more responsibilities than just carrying merchandise from A to B. They carry human lives.
Nick Miller A freight engineer has has just much responsibility as a passenger conductor. The issue is collateral damage from chemical or other hazardous cargo that can take kill a large neighborhood the train derails through. Only difference is bystanders not passengers become casualties. Be it from a chlorine car leak or a propane car BLEVY.
