Whenever a Mercury Records album featuring Frederick Fennel and the Eastman Wind Ensemble was released I would save up my allowance to purchase it. I was a teenager back then. What great music, performed by a dedicated conductor.
Performing this in high school right now, and all I can say is it's breath taking, yet odd at times, and that's just what I love about it. Not to mention the tuba part is extremely memorable in Movement 4.
Our high school band played this. I did the percussion entrance on the last movement at 10:00. There were only two of us in the band who could do the rhythm.
That's an extraordinary performance of that piece or music. I've had those 6 movements stuck in my head since I played in Jr. High band in 1979. You can't imagine how much I appreciate seeing it conducted by a colleague of the composer and performed by such fantastic musicians.
I played the piccolo on this piece back at college. Great piece! It was challenging at the 2nd movement to hold that long note at the end. The conductor conducted the 2nd movement at a slower tempo! hehe
To my ear, the 2d movement at 2:59 seems as if R.V.Williams, B.Britten, and M.Weinberg(or Vainberg) all got together for a few days and collaborated. Another thought ... wonderful to hear any fast and furious movement followed by a contemplative (not mournful) theme in a tempo from adagio up to moderato. Contrasts can be over-done, but hearing them done well is always enjoyable.
Outstanding performance of an outstanding work of one of the American Giants! But what a bunch of stiffs in the audience --- that polite smattering of applause at the end is all they could muster for a performance with that much energy and intensity?!?! Serious case of pearls before swine!
This piece rivals anything John Williams, Paul Creston, Gershwin, Copland or Howard Hanson ever wrote that sounds distinctly "American". :) I remember playing this in college as well. MAN do I love those rich harmonies, and that rhythmic ENERGY! :)
Really, the outer movements where conducted quite a bit too fast. They sacrificed a mountain of nuance--especially accents and dynamics--in the last movement ("March"). However, eee gads, what an incredible performing group--such precision with attacks and decays, and on the money intonation. This group really has their act together. I think this work represents Persichetti's finest writing.

I had the pleasure of playing bassoon under him. A wonderful musician.
I played bassoon in high school. We went to one of his workshops.
A true one of a kind legend 🎶 🎵

Love this delightful band work by Mr. Persichetti! His band works are so wonderful-love his harmonies and rhythmic elements.
Great performance, but whoever was directing the video had a great knack for avoiding showing the player(s) being featured at any given moment.
rloomis3 No kidding --- almost every solo completely missed! : - (

I had to study this in music college. It was such a joy just to listen to. This performance is magnificent.
Great conductor!!

Great performance of Persichetti's best known work.

I definitely agree. I think my favorite of his is Masquerade. Oh, the harmonies!
Kyle Aufderhar You are THE MAN! :) I've gotten back into listening to more Persichetti the last day or two, and MAN, it has been TOO long... :)
I agree with the comments below. Persichetti could compose with any of 'em.
この曲大好き!(^^♪

Not my favorite piece....I actually like Pageant and Psalm better than this one. However the 4th movement has always been a gem in my mind
