    As a long time California resident (now a ‘former’…I finally escaped) and the spouse of a contractor, contracting without a license is a HUGE problem in Cali. It is a regular occurrence for homeowners and small businesses to get completely shafted or destroyed. Not all cases meet the criminal standard, but there are plenty that do…

    In the contractor case with the "restitution" most likely it's this.. The "contractor" did some work which was then identified by code enforcement to be incorrectly done and the home owner had to pay fines, or the work they did failed causing significant damage and it was determined that the contractor was not licensed. It may also be work that was supposed to be permitted but no permit was obtained. Either way, he probably advertised as licensed but wasn't in order to get charges like this. In California you're actually required to post your professional contractors license number on your work vehicle.

    I enjoyed the last clip because I can relate. I had a contractor build a screened porch for me over 4 years ago. They did an awful job, screwed something up every time they were building. It was so bad I made the owner extend the warranty. Then he refused to honor the warranty, refused to have a proper inspection done and eventually stopped responding to any of my phone calls, emails, etc. I have learned way more than I ever wanted to about general contractors. I filed a complaint with the Secretary of State’s office and am hoping they will file a cease and desist order against them. 🙄

    In CA if you've done remodeling on your house it most be signed off by a licensed contractor or it can seriously affect the sale and price of your home as well as insurance. Having done remodel work on two homes. This extended to electric, plumbing, foundation work, roofing etc. Not to painting, plasterwork, any surface work. NEVER hire an unlicensed contractor.

    I knew a guy that did this and served jail time as a result. He was in Nebraska at the time. He also had a quite lengthy albeit realatively petty criminal history.
    He sold a bunch of jobs and collected half down but never showed up to do the work. Needless to say, the court had a pretty dim view on his actions considering his prior criminal history and I believe he has deferred sentiment or was on probation. I can't remember exactly but he ended up serving over a year for his tomfoolery!

  • @2sphynxboys
    @2sphynxboys 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Unlicensed Contractor in CA will most definitely get you a felony now. These guys either make off with a homeowners money, they do shoddy work that no inspector in his right mind will sign off on or they do a whole job without permits and the homeowner is unaware so the homeowners are left with an unlicensed, unbonded, unpermited nightmare. So CA has gotten very tough with these guys. They get a rush of them after natural disasters, like fire season, which is typically devistating in CA.

    Great to have Ben on doing his thing and also.... How fancy do you look in your suit and tie. Or did you steal that off a contractor on his way to court 🤔😎

    It's so sad they keep interrupting this woman's life every year!😂
    I can tell you this judge is way underpaid for what he's doing!

    I'm sure he's done this a million times, but he did an exemplary job of explaining things to them

    I don’t understand what difference it would make on the construction case if he gets his licence after the fact - when at the time he is being accused, he was not licenced?

    When you have damage to your property & want insurance to cover it, they won't if contractor had no, expired, or false license. Millions of dollars in damages, people's entire property or business, life savings... It should be criminal & if contractor is convicted than insurance possibly will help pay

    Glad Ben is making regular appearances. Ben seems like the kind of guy that knows when you're in need of a friend, and shows up with a six pack going, "hey man, want to have some beers?"

    That judge in the first 19:00 is amazing, he is a bit long winded but he is trying to make it so they don’t waste his time. He is respectful, he does not come out like other Judges and say you did this or you did that. This judge is also very helpful, these ladies appreciated him also.

    I watched this judge yesterday. And I found him delightful. So expressive. 😂 but I skipped through it to the end. Because I thought that’s where the action started. I read the wrong message. The next video started at 20 mins. Haha 😂so this is great that I can watch it with you all. 😢 sad it’s not live.
