The E-475 that was in the Corsair and Citation models was a 410 cubic inch motor with a torque rating of 475 lbs. The Ranger and Pacer models had the E-400 which was the torque rating of their 361 cubic inch engine.
There was a car between the Lincoln and the Ford, of course, and Donald even mentions the Mercury chassis. But the Edsel was supposed to be between the Mercury and the Lincoln. The name choice was weird. Ford executives had come down to four names--Ranger, Corsair, Citation, and Pacer--but were not satisfied (although all these names would be used for Edsel models). An executive committee looked over the names (18,000 had been suggested) and pulled out some of the rejects and Ernest Breech, a VP of the company, said: "Let's call it Edsel," and Henry Ford II and his mother reluctantly went along with it. And thus was lost the chance to use one of the excellent names suggested by poet Marianne Moore: Utopian Turtletop.
Thanks, Donald: great overviews.....a few minutes talk is to short, esp, with some of these RENOVATIONS, history, Options, engineering, etc. Interestingly, also be wonderful to mix viewing up, actually I would also like: slow Pan to 410 CI ENGINE ( 475 LBS.FT torque?) , from Truck Engine DEP(??),a rarity; or maybe a few pans thru interior & history, options.......
I'm of age and I remember thinking the first time I ever saw and Edsel, It looks like a Buick chewing tobacco! I owned 3 and all had a 290 V8 if I remember correct. I do remember filing the points a lot!
I have a theory about the Edsel in that the marketing was so intense and so early it forced or convinced even GM of its hype and caused them to make the one year 1958 Chevy which to my eye was even better looking than the Cadillac of that year and thus squash it in the bud.
Thsts incorrect. The E 475 engine is your torque rating, not cubic inches, which i believe was 410. The E 400 on the smaller models was 361 cubic inches
Russia launched the sputnik satelite right over our heads in October 1957 and scared many Americans right out of the prosperous thinking and into a more conservative mode. just my .02, When Kennedy was elected he jumped right on the problem and voila ! Mustang success. other factors involved also of course but something to ponder.
Never understood why no one liked Edsel. There was one in my small town growing up in the '80's and I always loved seeing that car.
I would love to go back in time and go to the auto shows of the mid to late 1950s!
This is a beautiful car it’s amazing it failed.

I love cars from the 50's. The 'stylage' is amazing. Sorry Donald, I had to borrow your dad's word.
funny how this car has become popular in last 10 years

I always thought that the Edsel was attractive, but it was amazing how those from that time thought that it was ugly.
Edsel : Every Day Something Else Leaks

I believe you're talking the Lincoln Zephyr in the questions at the end. When and where are the answers posted? Thank you!
1940 or 1941 Lincoln Zephyr// This was the car that Edsel Ford wanted to design and build!!!!
Quiz Answer- Could it be the Continental? Designed by the talented ET 'Bob' Gregorie and commissioned by Edsel after his return from Europe?
That has to be the one. It was built in 1938 as a custom car based on the Zephyr but went into series production in 1939.

475 is the torque rating // The motor is 332 c.i.d. with 225 h.p.//
The Zephyr
I heard it was a failure becouse the front nose resembled a woman’s private s
oh, That explains my desire to lick one.
I'd heard the same thing a number of times, and that the design was intentional on Ford's part.
