    How about using a quick release steering wheel spinner that can be easily positioned for ideal ergonomics given the variations of tooling, material, clamping etc.

    Hi,
    Quick question, is the wheel and up and down motion smooth and controlled when operating it, or can you feel the teeth and jerkiness of movement because of that?
    Another one I have, when you let go the wheel will the machine go up on her own or does is stay in position, height wise, where you left it?
    Just received mine and it is certainly used not new one :(, with hard operating wheel, where the teeth can be felt and it does not come back up (the limiter is not engaged). Also the depth measurement is broken :(

    Is it smooth? Can you use a 1.5mm drill without snapping it? The few bench drills I’ve used wobble slightly snapping small bits. Also has it got plenty of torque?

    hey mate , did you have any issues with the clamp not rising and lowering, takes me for ever to get the clamp down or up. i was wondering if you think i should wd40 the stem and gear rack. mine arrived bone dry

      I have lubed mine, but I rarely use the clamp because it is such a pig. I use a stand-alone vise if needed, though I find the fence eliminates the need for either a lot of the time.

    nice. I wonder if that connection for the wheel is somewhat standard so that one could purchase a replacement. I don't love the wheel either, although it isn't a huge problem for me.

      I have since got another handle arrangement which I might try after I see if the connection will fit. Another project for a rainy day.

    Just out of interest, has this Bosch PBD 40 survived in use until 2013?
    I'm just wondering about buying one myself for very light, occasional use for square drilling.
    Thanks!

      2023 I suppose... From the videos I've seen people are pretty happy long term. Seems to hold up well enough.

    Have you got play in your drill head, did you manage to take it apart to fix it yourself?

    • @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL
      @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, lots of play. I have pulled it apart and started tinkering... then I needed to use it, put it back together, and have never got back to having another go at it.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same. It's shit bearings. A russian dude replaced his and it seemed to have less play. I'm actually looking now to see if i can find the bearings i need. It's a shit product, and Bosch is shit about it too. It's their only press in the line-up and they have absolutely no intention of admitting that it's garbage in terms of results. I would gladly pay for a refit kit if they came up with one. Cheapo chinese bearings and tolerances from harbor frought.

    Hi. Is this drill powerfull enough for an adjustable hole saw? 150 mm diameter.

    • @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL
      @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      150mm might be pushing it somewhat.

      I have drilled a couple of 100mm holes in hardwood with it. But I wouldn't want to do it all the time.

    • @LudvigLindell
      @LudvigLindell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Thanks for the replies. Thinking of buying one for a speaker build. I will only do 8 holes ~100-105 mm diameter. And 4 40 mm holes. I think this'll be a good buy for me!

    You can actually take the whole rubber part off and there's 3 bosses. On those, with a piece of rolled thick wire (as backing) you can then put 3 bent screws with ball ends and turn it into a proper tool. Alternatively, a guy from Russia removed the whole wheel and found a boss online that matches the Bosch one and he then drilled the holes to put a standard set of handles. Can't find his video anymore (being in Russian doesn't help). He also, removed the shitty needle bearing and replaced that cheap chinese junk with a proper one. that killed a lot of the play. I think, that the top bearing is also a shit one, i'm actually going to take mine completely apart so i can put better everything inside.
    Does your laser not match center as well?

      @@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Yes. Thank you. Is this spring loaded center punch working all right on steel? Strong enough to make a reasonable dent?

    • @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL
      @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes spring loaded. Sometimes have to do it twice to get a good impression.

  • @AdaptingCamera
    @AdaptingCamera 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It looks like your machine needs some greasing... the machine stays down after you drilled, which is probably because the spiral spring can't lift it. Or is it one of the mods you made as well? Or maybe the single arm like that extension is, causing some serious imbalance and overweight, which is why you should have three of them. But even so, the spiral spring in my machine would be able to pull the machine with the extra handle up.

    I thought about the little radical rubber wheel design. Why would Bosch use that design when so many people complain and then make a mod similar to yours.
    Then my skeptic brain jumped in and said maybe Bosch are hiding the fact that a longer arm is going to apply too much force for different parts of the drill press to manage over time. With cracks, bending and breaking metal eventually happening and they know that.
    So, instead off installing a teensy little three armed press, which everybody would laugh at, of course, and then start asking embarrassing questions about why the tiny little arms. They decided to distract and put the cute little rubber wheel on instead and say " It's a design for modern DIYers. "
    Boy am I a cynical skeptic.
    But I did buy one. So go figure that out.

  • @antraciet

    Not the best bench drill in the world. A lot of noise. And yes, the mod on the handle is much better now on your drill.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And play. Bosch really phoned this one in. There's enough play in the head to snuff a codger innit.

  • @centralmobility
    @centralmobility 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wants it as long as possible so decides to chop it down rather than straighten it out?? 🤔
    I'd have used a ratchet tap wrench too. Decent mod though, just not over impressed with techniques 👍
