      I could or agree more. A folding knife with a steel that stays sharp a long time and a fixed blade that is almost indestructible. I picked up the Izula 2 today to give the setup a go. Also got the esee 3 for something a little bigger.

      I’ve been wondering the same thing-actually been thinking of doing a video discussing it, because I’d be damn temped to splurge on an S35vn Izula 2 to make for a good knife battle/comparison. That blade design and geometry compliments the weaknesses of S35vn so well...

    • @HardOnGearChannel
      @HardOnGearChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@John5.56 The big difference is definitely the corrosion resistance, otherwise… S30v/S35vn have better edge retention than 1095. 1095 however is much easier to sharpen and is much tougher (but softer)-meaning the blade edge won’t chip as easily.
      When 1095 gets dull or takes edge damage, it usually rolls and doesn’t take a lot of work to resharpen. When S30v gets dull or takes edge damage, you can sometimes find small chips in the edge which can cause hang-ups and/or be incredibly annoying to sharpen out.
      There are definitely pros and cons to each and everyone has their own opinion on which is best for certain tasks.

    At 2:30 into the video you discuss not getting the belt clip with the knife and sheath unless you buy the kit with it. My apologies but I believe you are mistaken. I recently purchased the Izula & I received the sheath with the belt clip. I did not get the kit accessory.
    I’m sorry I’m a bit confused about your ratings because you said 3/10 for use/abuse but HOG rating of 9/10 (or was that your apocalypse rating 🤔) but anyway, I think it’s far more deserving of an 8/10 on any scale at the very least.
    It’s an edc blade, it’s light and small as an edc should be. It’s supposed to piggyback with a larger blade like the ESEE 4/5/6 or something. It’s better for the finer detail work but can do everything. Only drawbacks are the oiling rituals and edge retention as compared to 3V or other super steels but idc. It’s a fabulous blade and I can’t wait to get the ESEE 6. Overall it’s a good video as you were quite thorough 🙌

      Apologies for the confusing multiple rating systems haha. This was one of my first videos and I may have over complicated things a bit 😅.
      The “Current Use & Abuse Rating” is how much wear and tear I had put on that knife, up to that point in time. The rating on my Izula 2 now would be wayyy higher after 2+ years of use.
      This spring/summer I’ll be pumping out a series of “Long Term Hard Use” Knife Reviews for a lot of the knives I’ve used the most-I’ll make sure to clean up my delivery and rating system before then.

    • @HardOnGearChannel

      Absolutely! Can’t go wrong with the Recon 1 for a tactical knife. Folder vs fixed blade is a whole different conversation though. Fixed blades are almost always a more reliable choice for self-defence (faster deployment, plus less chance of you missing your deployment during a high stress situation).

      All high carbon steels are non-stainless. It’s an unfortunate trade-off for extra toughness and edge retention, but well worth it. I live on the salty east coast of Canada and I’ve never had my carbon blades acquire anything more than surface rust, and I really don’t take that good care of them either. • @HardOnGearChannel
      @HardOnGearChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, good questions! Unless you have extremely small fingers, it’s just about impossible to use that hole as a karambit-style ring-reverse or forward grip. It’d nice though if they made a version with a slightly larger hole for that purpose.
      I had considered the ESEE 3 (even the Esee 4) over the Izula 2 (I like big knives and a cannot lie) but decided to go with the better carry-ability for the trade off of a little extra function/size. Full disclosure though: the Izula 2 is the first ESEE I’ve owned, so once I get an ESEE 3 I’ll be able to give you a better comparison between the two 👍

      Thats a bummer on the ring hole though i think its possible if it was skeletonized right? Cuz the scale covers up some of the ring size? That’s the same in my state that I live in. You can’t carry a knife with the intent for it to be used as a weapon. I carry a knife everywhere I go for self defense against mountain lions. There was a kid near me who saved himself from a mountain lion attack by slashing it across the chest with a buck knife and it ran off.
      So if I ever get stopped by police and asked what the knife is for, the only wrong answer is “self defense.” I could just say “nothing, just like carrying a knife.” And I CAN use it for self defense. Just can’t carry it with the INTENT of using it for possible self defense.

    You concentrating on a blade for self defense, shows you don't know jack about the subject.In reality,a knife is a very poor choice for self defense, for a variety of reasons.That's not to say a knife isn't a deadly weapon,it is very deadly,and that's a major problem for self defense. You see,it's very easy to mortally wound someone with a blade,without inhibiting his short term combat ability.I'm not going into more efficient systems,because the fewer people know those things,the better,(those tools can also be employed for offense as well as defense, and with all those anifa running around,I don't want to give them any ideas)

    • @HardOnGearChannel
      @HardOnGearChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s reasonable enough. Although there are a lot of experienced folks who would agree that having a knife as a backup is better than not having one. Whether I know jack 💩 or not, I tend to agree with that lot. Especially in a place (like Canada) where a person can’t legally carry “weapons”, but can carry “tools” such as knives.
      Effective striking + grappling, or a bat (or bullet 🤷‍♂️) to the head is surely more effective at stopping a threat than waiting for them to bleed out from likely less than immediately lethal knife wounds, but since this TH-cam Channel is a part educational/part entrainment based KNIFE CHANNEL, and NOT a self-defence centric one, I’m only really focusing on the knife-related stuff, which I’m sure you can understand,

    I live in the countryside and use my edc knife every day for all kinds of work ... opening bags of animal feed..cutting food for pigs (pumpkin, potatoes, etc.) preparing winter food .. I use it in the kitchen ... on camping ... My opinion edc knife must be stainless and not too thick. it is a knife that should primarily cut food well .. peel the food .. you wear it next to the body where there is a lot of moisture .. and trust me the coating used to protect the knife you do not want near your skin and food. Let go of the nonsense , your life will not depend on such a small knife, and if you have a set of abilities to survive with such a small knife you will survive without it.

      For sure, I have a lot of respect for the simple EDC philosophy you have. Most of my coworkers fall in the same category and share your opinion on ideal EDC knives and what is or isn’t practical.
      The main part of this channel is the information sharing and my giving honest reviews of the knives I use, but the other part of it is the entertainment/satire and the musing around with some nerdy hypothetical banter-which I try to save until the end so that super serious people don’t have to suffer through it.
      WITH THAT BEING SAID: a couple of months ago while bush camping for work, I had a bear outside of my tent heading my direction and the Izula 2 happened to be what I had on me. Unlikely that I would’ve had to use it, but at that moment (somewhat to your point) I I certainly wished I had a freaking battle-axe on me instead of that little thing.
