Hi Sweet Friends, Today I'm continuing with my Food Dehydrating Series 101. I'm drying citrus peels which are great for using in so many things. Next week, I am posting a video where I use these dried citrus peels to make citrus salts and sugars. What do you like to do with dried citrus peel? I am always looking for inspiration!! Love, Mary

Mary, How wonderful of you to show me another way of dehydrating tangerine peels. I usually dried them on the window sill. After they are completely dried. I keep them for many years till it turns brown color. It is a Chinese ingredient for braising meats or soups much like a bay leaf. Never thought of drying in a dehydrator or oven. Thanks for the heads up!

Coming to you from Arizona, formerly the DFW area. We have our own citrus trees and I can tell you nothing compares! If you're drying orange peels buy the thin skinned "juice oranges". If you see someone selling them by the road is is most likely a picker, the product will be much fresher. When you can get it, fruit from the Lower Rio Grande area (Hidalgo County, Willacy County, and Cameron County) is the absolute best.

Taking a break from harvesting broccoli heads and found your new vid. I like to peel with vegetable peeler, as you suggest here, before juicing or completely peeling to eat. Gives great peel and still leaves fruit firm enough to hand peel. Thank you for the excellent suggestions on how to use the dehydrated peel, some new ones to try.

Hi Mary. I'd like to use my dehydrator to make powder out of some orange peels, but I'd like to get a larger collection before moving them to the dehydrator. I noticed in your video that you keep a container of orange peels. Do you store your peels in the fridge or on the counter while you're amassing a large quantity? I appreciate it!

    • @TheCman5015PLPro
      @TheCman5015PLPro ปีที่แล้ว

@@toriarose I've been collecting citrus peels for dehydrating for a while now and can offer my own answer to this question: I generally keep my orange peels in the fridge using a 1 gallon freezer bag until I fill it up then it goes into the freezer. I've never had mold show up due to the fact that it takes me around a 2 - 3 weeks to fill a bag. With new air coming in and the contents getting shuffled around every time the bag is opened, mold is less likely to develop throughout the time. Once it goes into the freezer, the bag may sit for an additional 2 months before I dehydrate the orange peels from that bag and additional bags at once.
      This help?

"...And charming thriftstore finds." Unfortunately.. seems the stuff in thriftstores is better quality, made better etc. than new stuff nowadays.. The old stuff is sturdier and stays in circulation longer in our society, so the stuff is actually much more sustainable, environmentally speaking.. New stuff mainly favors the global economy and multinational activity outside the US..

Exactly! More fun to hunt as well. Don't forget yard and estate sales.

Why are so big if you eat simple?

There are MANY medical reasons that can cause people to gain weight.
Sadly, everyone overweight is shamed as if they are eating too much food when that isn't the case at all.
Certain Medications can cause weight gain and the inability to loose fat after you gain it.
Problems with the Pituitary gland can cause weight gain, as well as hormone changes and things that affect the glands that make and regulate hormones and the hormone receptors in the body.
Many times weight gain and inability to loose fat can also be caused by not getting certain nutrients. This happens when the body cannot properly absorb or utilize them.
Sometimes critical nutrients can be blocked from absorption by medications or compounds in foods that we eat.
Grain-based foods, such as wheat flour (used in baking bread or cereal, etc.), blocks the absorption of certain minerals, that's why we see it vitamins and minerals added back into things like cereals.
Everyone's body is different, and we can be born with conditions that don't allow us to process or utilize different critical nutrients or compounds in foods we eat.
Also, the soil much food that is grown in nowadays, has been stripped of it's nutrients because of modern farming practices.
Also, if we don't get enough of certain minerals, like iodine, or if we can't utilize it properly, then the thyroid doesn't function properly and weight gain as body fat can happen quickly and stay.
I read that there were about 180 known medical reasons for fat gain (and inability to loose it), but for some reason the focus is only on "calories" and that is incorrect.
