    I think that this is super cool. In a world of plugins and software, it's neat to find folks making special effects sounds like this. Placid Audio also comes to mind. You can get a lot of character during tracking by mixing a few mics like this into your session.

    A phantom powered bullet mic? Never seen that before. As a harmonica player, I'm interested in hearing how it sounds with actual harmonica.

    • @DrAlienSmith
      @DrAlienSmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got a DirtMic-01 with a harmonica player at the moment. He's going to be doing some studio recordings with it soon but he sent me this iphone recording of him just plugged straight into a PA facebook.com/DrAlienSmith/videos/2206816382685239/

    • @adamfox9651
      @adamfox9651 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice distorted tone. I haven't had much luck getting the amplified harmonica sound I want using distortion pedals, so that's a plus. The downside is I like to use other FX pedals, like tremolo, delay, reverb, etc., and a low-Z phantom-power mic makes that impossible without some creative jury-rigging.

    • @DrAlienSmith
      @DrAlienSmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adamfox9651 glad you like the tone :) Yeah, with other pedals too it would be tricky

    everybodys commenting how 200$ is crazy for this. but i think that for 200$ its a steal. sure you can use a distortion pedal on your guitar or whatever but the ability to throw mad gain on whatever else you want is worth it to me.

    This is an interesting product. When you have an element that requires dirt on it, it beats having to have pedals or reamping. The price point seems fair. How are you finding the clean tones compared to other mics in the same price range? Would this work as someone's "first good mic"?

    • @creativesoundlab
      @creativesoundlab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. This is a mic for color and dirt and for special tones. A first good mic for a studio would be something that is kinda bland but never sounds too bad on any one source.

    They should've put the ability to use it clean, or even put a high shelf switch, for live applications. Otherwise, i feel like you should have tried it on more sources, like kick out, room or even vocals. It breaks up very nicely, and is very natural in it's distortion, compared to plugins. I'd even try it on some synths. Overall, seems like a great tool to have at hand before going for a vst, achieving more natural sound earlier in the chain.

      @@ChrisSheridan295 Haven't seen earthquaker using it. From what I understand, they put a guitar pickup inside a copper tube, which was put inside of Maynard's megaphone (dude loves em apparently). I'm wondering if it could find other applications. Like putting it in a kick drum's porthole or right on the snare.

    I've been tempted to buy a lo-fi mic to use as a unique effect but never have. Here in the UK, a small company called Wasaphone makes some really cool lo-fi microphones. Their "Big Boy" is a really cool one if they still make it. Sylvia Massy likes the Wasaphone mics from what I've seen.

    • @Stevil935
      @Stevil935 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      not distorted at all, but if you want a good lo-fi mic check out one of those Radio Shack boundary mics. really good on drums in front of the kick/under the snare. also makes a good room mic depending on the application. wouldn't use it on anything with heavy distortion, but for drums/bass/room tone it's a damn good mic. you can find one used for like $20 on ebay.

    Makes drums sound like The Flaming Lips! I wonder what the distortion circuit is. I expect it's a simplified famous overdrive pedal. I like distortion on snare drums. I think you can use it a lot more easily in a way that you don't realise it's Distorted.

  • @AdamRainStopper
    @AdamRainStopper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm surprised you didn't try it as a close-mic on the snare. Either way, I fail to see how this is functionally different from using a dynamic with an XLR to 1/4" cable into a guitar pedal.

    This would be great as a live tool in situations where you don't have a lot of cash, need to have varying degrees of distortion right at hands level (harmonica), and also need a good harmonica mic. I could see taking this thing down to Beale street. Could be cool.
    Would never buy it for my studio, though. Memphis is full of cool vintage stuff, I could just make this for my studio without spending any money.
