    My 2 Cents: This is still one of my favorite synths. Based on the legendary C64 SID MOS chip, the SAMMICH Sid was a (now discontinued) DIY-project. You could fit two chips inside for up to six voices (paraphonic). Hidden behind lots of menues, you get access to almost every parameter, the SID sound engine offers. Multimodefilter, Arp, Sequencer, "Wavetables", several envelopes and lfos, and that really particular sound. And it brings much more to the table than only Chiptune-sounds.
    So in a nutshell, this one offers even more than an Elektron Sidstation and can sometimes be found significantly cheaper second hand (they go for about 600-750 € nowadays) .

      Have you tried Twisted Electrons' Therapsid? It appears to have full physical controls and is the one I'd be most keen on getting I think, though I'd have to find SID chips from somewhere.

      @@GurtTarctor Yes - in fact, I'm currently preparing a demo which should go online in March. There's a catch, though: Depending on the SID Chips you're using, the sound differs a lot. I was quite surprised by that tbh, thinking that it would rather be a minor thing.
      This gets even more evident, when combining two different SID chips in the same unit.
      Also, by now you don't get access to every single parameter of the SID with the Therapsid. Not a big deal, as it covers almost everything but the SAMMICH goes a bit further in terms of sound design. But TE is constantly improving the OS which is even open source.

      @@limbicbits looking at the manual for therapsid, things I see missing are test bit, not all access to all filter combinations (pretty obscure combinations left out), unable to set which voices are filtered (probably the biggest thing) Then some things that are not relevant to a synth like, reading poty, potx, using voice 3 to generate random numbers. Look forward to seeing your video on it.

    I reallllly wanted a Sidstation when I was a teenager.

    I really enjoyed the weirder, rawer patches! I can't afford one of those and they're very rare where I'm from, but I use basic65 a lot and I really love the sounds you can get out of it!

    Well I’ll be damned somebody finally made a recent sammich video. I have one of these puppies myself. The signal processing capabilities are amazing. The random section is the bees knees. I’ve noticed there is low but audible oscillation on most patches. I’m never getting rid of it though!

    Nice demo with versatile sounds. Plus a kind of analogue power, a few people are aware of, or expecting this coming out of SIDs @ 14:03 👍

      SID is so much more than chiptunes. I like that style but love the SID particularly for its melancholic pads and leads

    • @CurritmoRx
      @CurritmoRx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@limbicbits Indeed, it’s a hybrid Synthesizer with analogue filters, able to sound special, 8 bit but fat, too. 8580 R5 even can sound similar to analogue classics, for example in basses, leads or those pads you did in a nice melancholic way. Sometimes I feel like it’s a kind of misunderstanding when SIDs are only used for chiptunes. In C64 ok, but there’s more possible with it thanks to MIDIbox, MSSIAH and others ;)

    • @JahaJaho
      @JahaJaho หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@limbicbits I saw somewhere that the 8850 sounds a bit fatter than the rest. I am thinking about getting a TherapSID, but they problem is finding SIDS for it. Looks like SwinSID is the only option and according to differents tests they sound 99% as good.

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JahaJaho Swin SID really isn't that good, imo. I don't want to be snobby but when it comes to SID, I'm a bit picky.
      I wouldn't say that the 8850 sounds fatter. Maybe a bit cleaner but that also depends very much on the charge of the 6581.
      And that would lead to another challenge: If you'd like to use a pair you have make sure that they match. I've been searching for a different project matched 6581 and it has become some kind of a dead end, including "new old stock".
      The sound differences aren't subtle and even picking to SIDs from the same production year might result in a compkletely different filter closing behaviour.

    • @JahaJaho
      @JahaJaho หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@limbicbits It is fine if you are picky. I am picky about some things too. Finding original SIDs seems to tricky for me so I think that the only reasonable options is som SwinSID. Or perhaps going software. The Chipsynth C64 from Plogue seems good, what is your thought about that one?

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JahaJaho It's not bad at all but I'd rather aim for SwinSID, then. Btw. you can find SID-chips quite easily on ebay or in dedicated synth forums. The only thing is the challenge to find a matched pair.
      I haven't tried it with the 8850 as it came with this synth already. But as these work perfectly together, maybe MOS did some improvement with that series that makes it easier to find two almost identically sounding chips. You should find these for 30-50 € per chip, depending on the condition.

      lol - well, at least this one is hard to get second hand and even more difficult to get in a decent working state. But Twisted Electrons have a good alternative with their TherapSID (which I'm going to showcase later that year).
