    I gotta say, every time you pull out your modified ka-bar. It makes me smile. it is the most beautiful edge and ka-bar i have ever seen. It is truly a BEAUTIFUL knife. I can tell you like it just as much. and is probably one of, if not your favorite knife in your collection

    Wow, thats a beauty! I like how the tang does not extend through the front of the handle, as the steel can get very cold in the winter and bother your hand. This should be quite comfortable. Very nice piece and fit and finish! I love the mirror polish.

    I grew up just a few miles from Temagami, the region this knife was named for.
    Excellent review.

    Helle knives for the win! I've got the Helle Fjellkniven, and I absolutely love it; very comfy and well made. Nice video :D

    The convex is great for breaking wood! The scandi is more ment for finer work. It would be awesome if you made a video testing shollower cutting as well :)
    If you peel of thin layers of wood or sharpen a stick for example... Great video!

    I was hoping you got your hands on a temagami. They are completely impossible to get a hold of here in Norway, so I have not been able to test one myself. great video

    When the edge takes chipping, Scandi edge is much easier to restore to keep the same edge angle. Convex edge restoration often deepens the edge angle and I don't like it. But for the edge performance I personally prefer a high convex grind like Bark River knives. I am not a bushcrafter at all but a dedicated deer hunter. Thanks.

    @mantrop Rockstead seems to be a Japanese knife maker. But their products are extremely pricey. They don't even recommend users to sharpen their knives by themselves and do recommend users to send them back to sharpen. And they say their knives will hold its edge for 2 years just with polishing. Their products look like cyber metal. I need a convex micro bevel to slide on bones in getting back straps beautifully. Thank you!

    Very imformative video. I can see the superior performance of the convex edge. I've noticed this in my own limited experience. My convex Fallkniven F1 is a better perfomer than my Scandi grind Mora Clipper. Still, my Mora is excellent for bushcraft and for the money is excellent. But I do prefer the convex. Thanks for posting this video.

  • @brianl890
    @brianl890 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the Temagami Carbon and can't ignore the convex edge. However. It iseasier to sharpen because you can use a waterstone and rest it against the bevel because of the Scandi grind. Moreover, the convex edge is more delicate A convex edge is harder to sharpen. In a bushcrafting situation you will appreciate the Scandi grind more so than the convex. Just my opinion. Love the Scandi grind. Good video.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @practicalskills I was expecting the same thing. But the convex breaking power won the Scandi sharpness in this kind of wood cutting. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Nebulax123 I like a Scandi edge with a micro convex bevel. It's not so sharp as a genuine convex edge, but sharp enough for dressing a game and very tough. The Helle edge angle is perfect for a micro convex bevel in my experience. Thanks.

    @OnRappel I love rampless Bravo1 with confidence and have 3 pieces. While I left Canadian Special very instantly just after a single use on deer dressing. It had the sharpest edge in Barkies but the least belly as well. And I didn't like its finger locking rectangular handle. Anyway I have never owned Aurora, but it seems to be as sharp as Canadian and its handle looks quite comfortable. I guess Aurora will take the position of your Canadian. Thanks.

    that crack in the handle can be fixed by drilling holed where the crack end , use a epoxy glue in the hole . ive done that on rifle stocks and it works

    You are right. Helle is a norwegian company based in Geilo. Unfortunately a lot of their knives are not to get a hold of here in Norway.

      Lorbera They are in Holmedal actually. And where they are based, I am almost positive you can use all of their knives legally there. It is an invaluable tool to the farmers, fishers, and others.

    @MrOnion2001 I agree with you. The full covering handle should be enough for the 3mm blade. But this full tang Scandi knife gave me strong feel during cutting for sure. It might only be from its handle ergonomics though. Thanks.

    The Bark River looks like a Ray Mears knock off without the Scandi grind on the blade. The blade thickness and handle shape looks very similar.

    Hi, Wako!
    I don't like Helle Temagami - I think is over priced, but Helle carbon inside layer steel is very good steel.
    I have a little experiance with scandi grind knives and my opinion is that this type of blade is good for small cut on the surfice of the wood (i can't explane very well sorry) not for deep cuting - if you want depp cutter you need a high scandi grind - but the edge is not so tuff, low scindi grind - good for skining and big leuko blades. Convex is the best grind i think;)

    @virtuovice I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your vids. Thanks. I was wondering if you have any plans to review some Rockstead knives. I know they are crazy expensive (Y160 000!). But perhaps considering your reputation they might lend a knife to Hokkaido's premier blade reviewer. Just a thought.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @edxamador Temagami is more bushcraft than Enzo Trapper in my opinion. The Trapper full tang must be tougher in batoning wood, and its handle can be easier for angle change in hunting. Temagami handle and edge seems better in wood jobs. I will do a new competition after my self contoured Kellam handle is oiled up. Thanks.

    Wako,
    You remind me of Yoda. Very wise. I have a Bravo 1 and a Canadian Special 3V. Since KSF is now carrying a good assortment of Auroas, I've been thinking about buying one of those. Do you have any experience with the Auroa, and how does it compare to the Canadian Special and Bravo 1. Thank you for your service.

    @johnwoodz1220 I love my short KaBar very much too. But the Barkie handle is too beautiful to modify. Thank you!

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Nebulax123 If you mean a full height convex, I think it will need 4 mm thick. Its 3 mm thick blade will take a convex bevel starting from the mid line. But it should be very difficult for me to make it beautifully. I am already addicted to its Scandi beauty too much to give it something ugly. Thanks.

    I don't know what carbon steel is to this Helle knife. Anyway this carbon steel is decent. I have some experiences with KaBar's 1095 steel. It is pretty tough and durable, seems better than O1. Thanks.

    how about temagami vs enzo trapper, I think enzo metal and full tang should be better that the helle.
    I think a new scandi edge knifes competition is in order

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @mccullenj I have no 3V. And I don't have any interest in it. I have no complaint on A2. A2 have a decent history in my hunting use, and I have never experienced micro chipping nor even dulling after a couple of deer straight. So I got to totally depend on A2. A big chunk of A2 is Bravo1. So I totally depend on Bravo1. They will make 3V Bravo1 as they do on others. But I won't need it. It's their business issue and is not my cutting problem. BTW the Temagami had no micro convex bevels. Thanks.

    @Marco95772 I have all the ESEE lineup except for Junglas. They are very cool and kind of must items surely, but practically not the best in my opinion. Scandi or convex edge is better both in small jobs and in large jobs in my experience. The ESEE powder coating is stunning and their sheaths are well done though. Thank you!

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @stefanwolf88 Hi Stephan!
    Surely over priced. But I felt like I had to try it out to the hunting. If I was asked, I would just say I didn't like a secondary V edge...lol

    I am enjoying a lot your videos.
    One question raised up while watching this comparison.
    I know you are really fond of convex grind, and I agree with your ideas in many aspects.
    But, regarding the difference of wood cutting performance in this video, is it from the different grinds only?
    In this case, I think the thickness of the blade affected most, the bevel height and quality of steel (hardness) also affected.
    I do not have any convex edge knife, so I can't compare.
    What do you think? Let me know of your opinion if possible. :)

    • @rustyshackleford17
      @rustyshackleford17 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Convex edges are very impressive, but they're a pain to sharpen. Obviously, he is very skilled at it changing up the grinds to how he wants it.
      There are many aspects of a knife that plays into its performance. Heck, the best carver/fethersticker I have is a .25" thick 10 inch chopper because it comes down to such a thin edge.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @40DegreeShoulder The lock-up is still very safe. It is possibly much tougher than expected. Thanks.

    @BRIKbushcraft To say a country name is rather difficult for me. I like Buck, Bark River, Helle and other Scandi brands very much. I don't like CRKT, but SOG and Benchmade in folders. So I would say it is the US. Thanks.

    nice blade terrrible handle it looks like it was hacked out of an old piece of wood from a scrap wood pile -so many defects i am amazed at how bad the handle is as i am from ontario where temagami is and les stroud who promoted this knife they can come up with much better wood than that flawed handle=stick to the buck model 119 special which les stroud swore by until he got paid off =expect much more from canadian hardwood

    • @rustyshackleford17
      @rustyshackleford17 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to Les, he found and carried a knife similar to this for a long time. Maybe its the resolution or my poor eyesight but that handle didn't look all that bad. Curly wood never looks uniform.

    • @guncotton1950
      @guncotton1950 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      that is not even what i would call curly and it looks like there are even fill spotsand a big crack down one side kinda like they made it out of an old shipping crate -in Canada we have crap tons of trees give the nice man a decent piece of wood = to me that handle would have been unacceptable and I am not that fussy by the way Les Stroud swore by and used the Buck model 119 special for years before he started endorsing products

    • @rustyshackleford17
      @rustyshackleford17 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      guncotton 1 Well curly birch is what you see on most knives coming out of scandinavia. I am curious if he still even uses the Temagami

    • @guncotton1950
      @guncotton1950 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lots of birch trees here in Canada and its easy to buy an official Helle Les Stroud blade with no handle for 62 dollars Canadian from Bushcraft Canada and then you can make a really nice handle yourself think i night just do this even if I do have a buck 119 special anyway my buddy collects bark river knives some with curly maple handles which are awesome the knives and the curly maple -maybe curly birch just does not look the same
