It took me 5 years to even think of listening to this song & I finally got up the nerve about a week ago to listen to it and I’m really glad I did. Even though I ball hysterically every single time, it’s some stuff that obviously needed to come out. R.I.P. The first time I heard this song when it came out, it perfectly expressed the pain I felt going through so much abuse and the constant desire to end my life. In my head, every time I was close to the edge, I would hear the line "I won't let this build up inside of me." It gave me that little bit of strength to make it to the next day. So many years later and I am still here, able to feel worthwhile and always trying my best to bring light to others trapped in the same darkness I was. This song was the flame that helped guide my way through the darkness, and I will be forever grateful for that.

I love seeing what difference of opinion people have in the meaning of this song, to each person the song means something different to them, maybe it's someone you lost, or someone you'll never be with, but it's what makes slipknot so special, they speak to all of us in different ways and it's up to each individual to figure out what each song means to them, in my opinion this song is about a man who has feelings for a woman he knows he will never be with, because he's not good enough for her and all he can do is look at her with heartache, knowing they will never be together, she's the unattainable, and it eats at him on the inside and torments him and he's trying his best to not let it build up inside of him.
I interpret this song as a guy who commited a big mistake and because of it he lost someone he loves too much and now there's nothing he can do to recover her love and make her come back to him .

I've listened to this song so many times. But I could never really figure out what it meant to me. At least, the way I interpreted it. My fiancee recently said she didn't understand why I liked it so much, because she thought it was about drug addiction. Had me convinced it was. Tonight, I randomly went down the wormhole of Slipknot, and came here. I started reading the comments about people losing their girlfriends and wives. And other people saying what the song made them feel. It made me realize that one day, I may have to be without her. And I'll find myself back listening to this song. It'll make me remember the memories with her, through all the years I've played this song. It makes me realize that one day I may miss her, and wish I had another moment with her. The emotional values to Slipknot, and Korn's work are irresistible. They got me through the toughest years of my life. Korn wrote the anthems of my life going through grades 4-12, and Slipknot wrote the anthems of my highs and lows. Glad the cover didn't scare me too far away from the book. These bands write pages of my life on sheet music and express me in ways I never could.
I first heard this during one of the hardest and most depressing times of my life - it had so much feeling in it and evoked such strong waves of emotion from me, to the extent that I'd tear up listening to it at times. Generally only at the end of my saddest, most depressing days. But this song is amazing, it's songs like this that I remember the most - these are the kinds of songs that take me back to my dark days, but in a good way. There was a girl in high school, we were always together, I was in love but I was too young and shy to say what I felt. I never knew what she felt, after school ended, she and her family moved far away and today I carry that burden of never having been so clear to her. @@hallowthepeach when you come from a place where you never felt love and you aren't capable of staying detached from people who only give you their breadcrumbs because it's so much more than you ever had, you tend to find yourself feeling worthless no matter how much you give and everything you sacrifice for some reason the more you give them the less you get in return and I understand that it's a me problem, I'm working on myself trying to reprogram a lifetime of evidence that points to the most likely conclusion, I battled self harm as a child and I only escalated from there to suicide and drug addiction anything to fill the void inside of myself that emptiness that not many people know exists inside all of us, and I would wager most addicts are not addicted to drugs they are addicted to the escape from their own loneliness that place where some people have family and others have religion or sports or whatever they truly place value upon, when you find someone else who fills that up in you but apparently you aren't doing the same for them no matter what you think they aren't capable of telling you what they need from you so you give everything you have and they don't see it as what it is love is a fucked up emotion that is different for all of us I truly believed that she was my everything, but she was able to walk away without even giving me a proper goodbye after convincing me that she was doing it all for me, 1 year ago today I helped her move into her own place believing that she was being honest with me about her mental health issues but sending a text message after I leave asking for more space hurt life hell, but I still never expected to never see or talk to her again after everything I did for her I just have a hard time believing that I have any worth left in me

The first time I heard this song when it came out, it perfectly expressed the pain I felt going through so much abuse and the constant desire to end my life. In my head, every time I was close to the edge, I would hear the line "I won't let this build up inside of me." It gave me that little bit of strength to make it to the next day. So many years later and I am still here, able to feel worthwhile and always trying my best to bring light to others trapped in the same darkness I was. This song was the flame that helped guide my way through the darkness, and I will be forever grateful for that.

I love seeing what difference of opinion people have in the meaning of this song, to each person the song means something different to them, maybe it's someone you lost, or someone you'll never be with, but it's what makes slipknot so special, they speak to all of us in different ways and it's up to each individual to figure out what each song means to them, in my opinion this song is about a man who has feelings for a woman he knows he will never be with, because he's not good enough for her and all he can do is look at her with heartache, knowing they will never be together, she's the unattainable, and it eats at him on the inside and torments him and he's trying his best to not let it build up inside of him.
I interpret this song as a guy who commited a big mistake and because of it he lost someone he loves too much and now there's nothing he can do to recover her love and make her come back to him .
For me it was about myself in both first and third person; in willful denial, but still unable to ignore the truth of my gender. Took another decade and change to fully come to grips with that, heh.

I've listened to this song so many times. But I could never really figure out what it meant to me. At least, the way I interpreted it.
My fiancee recently said she didn't understand why I liked it so much, because she thought it was about drug addiction. Had me convinced it was.
Tonight, I randomly went down the wormhole of Slipknot, and came here. I started reading the comments about people losing their girlfriends and wives. And other people saying what the song made them feel. It made me realize that one day, I may have to be without her. And I'll find myself back listening to this song. It'll make me remember the memories with her, through all the years I've played this song. It makes me realize that one day I may miss her, and wish I had another moment with her. So I should be grateful for every moment I have with her now. Or die before her. ;)
I finally figured out what this song means to me.
And that's the beauty of Slipknot.
I know this comment is old, and I understand what you meant by all this, but you really shouldn't think of things that way, it's a self-destructive way of living your life.

Renee' Rodriguez I thought this about Slipknot, Korn, and many of my other current favorites. It's funny how simple, generic alt-rock can be a gateway to greater things. The emotional values to Slipknot, and Korn's work are irresistible. They got me through the toughest years of my life. Korn wrote the anthems of my life going through grades 4-12, and Slipknot wrote the anthems of my highs and lows. Glad the cover didn't scare me too far away from the book. These bands write pages of my life on sheet music and express me in ways I never could.
This song hits differently since Joey's death. Rest in peace, you absolute legend.

In my opinion, this song really solidified slipknots place amongst the best. Really shows they artistic range.
I first heard this during one of the hardest and most depressing times of my life - it had so much feeling in it and evoked such strong waves of emotion from me, to the extent that I'd tear up listening to it at times. Generally only at the end of my saddest, most depressing days. But this song is amazing, it's songs like this that I remember the most - these are the kinds of songs that take me back to my dark days, but in a good way. Hard to explain, but I know someone out there will understand.

I went and worked out, started running half marathons, got my pilot license recently, and completely changed myself inside and out and it has brought me so much happiness by just being happy with the man in the mirror.
