How To Write A Comic Book - Donald F. Glut

  • Donald F. Glut has been active in both the entertainment and publishing industries since 1966. Don has had a long and varied career. He has been a professional musician, actor, film director, executive producer, photographer, magazine editor, proofreader and (very briefly, for an advertising agency) copywriter, but is mostly known for his long career as a freelance writer. He has written and directed feature-length motion pictures, documentaries and music videos, authored approximately 80 fiction and non-fiction published books, myriad TV scripts (live action and animation shows, network and syndicated), comic-book scripts, short stories, magazine articles, even music and theatre. He has been involved with numerous popular franchises such as Star Wars, The Monkees, Tarzan, Spider-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Vampirella, Masters of the Universe, The Flintstones, Jonny Quest and many others, and created original comic-book characters for Gold Key, Marvel and DC. Arguably Don is best known for his novelization of the second "Star Wars" movie The Empire Strikes Back (#1 Best Seller). Don currently executive-produces, writes and directs "traditional-style" horror for his company Pecosborn Productions, and writes scripts for The Creeps horror comics magazine. Also, he is a Southern California representative of Las Vegas Talent Agency. Note: Any motion picture titles that may be listed prior to Dinosaur Valley Girls (1997) are of amateur movies, the first of 41 of which Don Glut made when he was nine years old.

    Stuff we use:
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

      Comic books are like tv shows, short stories or episodic. Graphic novels are like a movie, one long story. Different terms for different styles of storytelling.
      Also he specifically states if it was comic books or graphic novels that he worked on.

    @14:01-15:12 This story had me howling. For those who might not already know: Donald Glut's old friend from Jersey, Jim Steranko, is a famous comic-book artist/writer, in his own right. His runs on _Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD_ and _Doctor Strange_ in the 1970s, have some of the most imaginative, inventive stories in comics. If you get the chance, definitely check out Steranko's work.
    Anyways, just thought I'd share that. All the best, everybody.

    I am currently writing my first graphic novel and all tips and tutorials are welcomed. I may have made the mistake of creating a world too large and including way too many characters and way too many ideas. But I can't throw it away. I have to finish it. I've gathered so much information over the internet and most of it is good and helpful. When he said he had a friend who is an escape artist, I knew immediately he was talking about the great Jim Steranko. I had the pleasure of meeting the guy in 1990 something. He was a very cool dude. And a fantastic artist. He was the guy who did the original Nick fury agent of shield comics in the 1960s. Also, he is describing what is now called the golden age of comics from its inception in the 1930s to about 1955. Then we go into the silver age of comics which lasted until the mid 70s. The creators in the methods he’s describing are the basis for western now all those things have changed tremendously.

    I was wondering, when your writing a comic series with protagonist that arch’s where in the three act structure do you end the first book.

    • @DJMurdock
      @DJMurdock ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it probably depends on how many books you want the story to have.

    • @travisnobleart
      @travisnobleart ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think that every act has its own three acts, and each of those have their own three acts and so on down to three acts of a scene, then you can decide where and how to structure your first book. I don't think there's one way to do this. And definitions change for everyone. The three acts look like this to me: Act I Desire. ACT II Foil. ACT III Inner Conflict + Resolution. The story as a whole has this, and each scene and sequence can be broken down into this. To illustrate, this structure works also in a painting. You have a desire, a pathway to navigate through the painting. And then the foil blocks you from leaving the path and directs you to the final conflict, the point of no return. And that point in act three where you have the most conflict. It's the center of interest to direct your eye. And it either resolves at that point or directs you back into itself or (if this painting were instead a comic) into another panel.

      I know it's old news, but I write a series called GH057 STORY and every book has little arcs in it. Like this, the characters change, but they're not at their end stage of their arcs. Just map your arcs out before you do your series to avoid doing too much or too little.
