- Johannes Brahms: 3 Intermezzi Op. 117
Played on an 1886 Steinway B in my home. Recorded with Rode NT5 Cardioids in NOS-configuration (90° and 30cm) plus a distant omnidirectional pair of dynamic microphone for ambience.
Didn't notice it was so close to sundown, which is why the light changes so drastically. Camera is an Olympus OM-D M5 MarkII, which usually makes better videos.
The piece itself is work in progress, but at this point I am pleased with the current state of affairs. - เพลง
This is brilliant on many levels!
First of all, wonderful playing! I love it when a pianist understands the ambiguities in Brahms and knows what to do with them. Few pianists get that right. I think you absolutely nailed these pieces!
I also love many other aspects of your playing, like your timing, your phrasing, dynamics, and quality of tone. Very professional and beautiful playing, bravo!
Secondly, I love your piano! I have a Richard Lipp & Sohn from the exact same year, so I know how much character top instruments of that era can have, but it still depends on the condition of the soundboard, the strings and the preparation & condition of the hammers. It's a beautiful grand piano that you have there!
Finally, I'm really impressed with the sound/recording quality you have achieved in such an awkward part of your room! I used to record pianists for many years, so I'm aware of the challenges involved, but I probably wouldn't have bothered trying to record additional reflections further away from the instrument. Too risky for me. I would probably have recorded with two mics underneath the piano, plus a third mic above & in front of the piano. It's easier for me to mix and ballance. Anyway, I love what you did with your setup!
Thanks a lot for sharing this video!
Greetings from The Netherlands.

Wonderful, touching playing, Peter - lit from within. And congratulations too on the warm, mellifluous sound of your 1886 Model B in all registers.
