I'm loving the fuck out Lea DeLaria these days. I picked up her cover of Black Hole Sun as an impulse buy and couldn't stop listening to it. If you would've told me this would be coming from Big Boo from OITNB, would not have believed you
What a star! I'd already seen the Rosie O'Donnell performance, and it's somehow even better with her all butch. (And of course, the presence of an orchestra is flippin' fantastic too.)
I saw that production before its Broadway remount, in Central Park's Delacorte Theater, where it was presented as one of The Public Theater's free "Shakespeare in the Park" summer offerings. It was a magical and unforgettable evening under the stars. Lea DeLaria's Hildy, and her performance of this song specifically, will be permanently etched in my memory. When a knock-out song is paired with a knock-out performance, it's a high that can't be beat. Don't know why the show tanked on it's move to Broadway. Tried to catch the final performance but it was completely sold-out. If Lea DeLaria was denied even a Tony nod--well something is rotten on Broadway! A crime was committed.
I saw it both at the Delacorte and on Broadway. The fundamental limitation of the production -- which I enjoyed tremendously both times -- was the weak choreography... this in a musical originally choreographed by Jerome Robbins! Astonishingly, they actually CHANGED CHOREOGRAPHERS between Central Park and Broadway, with no discernible improvement. The more recent Broadway revival got it right: the integration between direction and choreography was seamless, and dance was rightly seen as an essential part of the show.

Impressive but off key on the first part. More shouting than singing.
