    This lens has helped me get some outstanding full body portraits on my Sony A7IV. The IQ is top notch and eye auto focus works awesome. I updated the lens from stock version 2 to version 4. Only negative I found was that the gasket on the lens mount is almost nonexistent.

      @paiman_ 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tbh every lens should come with a USB-C port, or at least able to update through the camera body.
      Tamron and Viltrox are doing it so there's no excuse for other manufacturers.

    Wow!
    Samyang is really killing it when it comes to AF lenses.
    I have their 85mm f1.4 lens & I'm so happy with it.
    It's a lighter lens compared to other 85mm, its sharp, fast AF, accurate colours and overal a solid built lens.
    Love it.

      @@jxy5484 No, not at all. It's pretty silent. I can't hear it unless I'm in a quiet room & put my ear next to the camera (im pretty sure any lens fails that test, since no lens is completely 100% silent).

      What about Chromatic aberration and a little yellowish skin tone.?

    • @paiman_
      @paiman_ 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vaishc.....6488 I haven't noticed any harsh chromatic abberations, but there may be a tiny bit in very very harsh contrast situations. Nothing lightroom can't easily fix though. I sold this lens now because I don't use it much since buying the 28-75 Tamron lens but when I had it, I was very happy with it.
      Yellowish skin tone was not an issue for me, I barely noticed any. Again, nothing lightroom can't fix with a single slider adjustment.

    Many, many images with focus frame on the eye, but real focus on the eyebrows or similar. So many unsharp iris'es, would consider most of them as throwaways... Think you're suffering of the well known A7iv's focus problem (just as mine), where it wants to focus on the iris, but jumps to more contrastful lines if there are any visible. Usually the problem occurs with eyebrows, beard or stray hair or even (vertical, gray-ish) building structures. Not a Samyang issue, but a A7iv issue - still hoping for a firmware update to arrive soon...

    Thanks for your review.
    Seems like other reviewers are saying this lens stands up very well to the Sony 135GM and might be even slightly sharper.
    The only issues are battery drain and focus consistently. Hopefully Samyang can fix this via firmware.
    Will wait till then to purchase one.
    I actually have the A-Mount version that I use with a LAEA5 adapter. This SAL 135 1.8 is quite amazing for its ability to melt away the most difficult background while looking film like. It’s also very sharp. I hear that the 135GM is sharp but rather clinical. I wanted to buy one to complement my SAl for landscape photography but hesitated due to price.
    But this Samayang lens looks like a really well priced and fantastic optic thanks to reviews like yours. Looking forward to updates to fix the issues, so I can finally purchase a native 135 mm lens.

    Just trying this lens on A7II, the autofocus isn't working that well. I'm surprised that, if the subject is not moving, the face detection keep loosing the focus, or it take is and loose. And a good percentage of the shots aren't in focus. If the subject is moving some are in focus some not. Anyone has the same problem? Do you know how to solve it?
    With the samyang 35mm if the subject isn't moving the camera n the lens are keeping the focus on the face. If the subject is moving with af-c the focus is bad (maybe you get 20-30% photos with good focus). bye

    I really like how the Samyang renders the images, even if I already have the 135mm GM.
    But many of your photos look like the pupil is blurred and actually the eye brows are in focus instead. That's already visible on photos with upper body and head. Looks like the AF issue of the a7 IV to me that Sony confirmed on a review on the a7 IV product page that is visible to the public.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I love the Samyang render as well. The iris and other parts of the face can be in focus at the same time, like many images here. It depends on the angle of shooting and the shape/angle of the face. I shared some eyelash focus examples and you can see a pretty big difference in that vs the majority of photos that are in focus on the iris. It’s harder to see since Jasmine’s eyes are quite dark, but they are in focus. I also saw Sony confirmed they are working on an update, I wonder if it affects a batch of cameras perhaps.

    • @schildzilla
      @schildzilla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@juliatrotti I would say if it was just a small bad batch they wouldn’t be working on a general firmware update and just do a recall for the bad badge. Let's hope there is an update coming very soon that fixes this issue. It's really annoying. Haven't had such bad Eye-AF results with my a7R III which I luckily still have. I have had several series even with full body shots completely out of focus when the eye was framed.

    I bought GM 135mm F1.8, it was an impulse purchase when I saw it on Gumtree for $1500 (Australian). I also own Sigma 85mm and Sigma 105mm. For their output quality I actually prefer 105mm Sigma, in my opinion it is actually a tad sharper than GM135 which was considered the sharpest Sony tele focal primes , but it is heavy and almost double the weight, it has better bokeh. GM135 offers an output quality sits somewhere between 85mm and 105mm Sigmas. 85mm Sigma DN DG is lighter and very very fast in auto focus even faster than GM135. I generally have 85mm and 135mm in the bag.

    I know this is a video about the 135mm lens, but have you noticed any Eye-AF inconsistency with a7iv? Some have been reporting Eye-AF front focusing issues when lenses like Sony 135mm F1.8 are used in close up shots (like shoulder up shots). For example, some people reported that A7iv was less reliable than now old a7Riii when they took close-up shots of people. They would get surprisingly less useable shots (eyes not in focus) with a7iv than with a7Riii. Sony has confirmed that they are working on a firmware update, but I was wondering whether you had any issues with that.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had any eye AF issues yet, from what I read it could be a batch issue with some cameras. I've done a bunch of tests on both my camera bodies with all my lenses, closeup shots indoors and outdoors and it shows a normal focus consistency, usually 18 or 19 of 20 shots sharp on the iris with a still subject. I also heard Sony have acknowledged this, I really hope the firmware update fixes the issue!

    Exellent review, @juliatrotti !!! I am in America, been looking at 135mm lenses for a couple of years. I, as you, look at the Sony 135 G and the Sigma 135 - both appear excellent though heavier and much more expensive. Right now the ROKINON (as Samyang is known in the USA) is on sale for $719.00 - this seems like a real steal to me?! Your reiew is very helpful, best that I have seen although Dustin does a great job as well. Does one truly require the docking station??? I use a Sony a7ii. I must decide like VERY soon before the price increases to $999.00. The only possible downfall is that I also shoot a bit of sports photography - and the Sony's autofocus is clearly a bit faster - yet, is that worth the enormous price difference???? Thoughts! Thanks! Oh, and the battery drain - still an issue???

    Many thanks for an excellent review Julia! I decided to splurge on this lens and am very pleased with the image quality. I noticed the battery drain issue and updated the firmware. However, the update seems to have brought on a new problem with my copy: my Sony A73 keeps crashing every now and then while using this lens. At random intervals the camera briefly turns off and on again while shooting. This resets the exposure values and turns off silent shutter. I notified Samyang customer service today but haven't yet received a reply. Not sure if I just have a bad copy, but this wasn't an issue in my brief time before the update or with any other lens. It would be nice to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience!

    • @hannahdobbs226
      @hannahdobbs226 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I don't think you really need both. However many use the 135GM instead of a 70-200 f2.8. The bokeh will be much better with the f1.8 prime and you can always crop into the image if needed. I have the 135mm GM and haven't used a 70-200mm since owning it. Depends on what you like to photograph but it might make sense to sell 70-180mm and get a longer zoom like 100-400 or something extending to 600mm

For some lenses it's enough to stop down just a little - less than a stop to get perfect bokeh balls.
